my. brother is officer when the first gulf war then he got he started a new job and then work at gsa In. Logistics

A few years back, I learned that a good friend of mine (and a veteran) was diagnosed with bone cancer. I contacted a representative of Mr. Ermey asking (partially in vain) if Gunny could record a motivational message for my friend. To my great surprise and pleasure, a few days later i got a personalised recording from Gunny directed towards my friend; providing a great deal of inspiration. Those few words served to inspire my friend through some tough times. Gunny did not have to take his time to do such a thing, but he did so without hesitation. That is the sign of a great man. RIP Gunny and you will be missed. What a nice and generous guy.

The Gunny was at a Glock days appearance in Denver. I was gonna take a couple hours off of my job to get his autograph but was involved in a really bad crash on the way to work. It was one of my biggest “Get back on my feet” bucket list items to get to meet the Gunny. My buddies got me an autograph that said “Sorry I missed you, next time. Simper Fi” . I’m finally getting close to walking on my own again and it sucks so bad that I’ll never get to shake his hand. Thank you for the inspiration Gunny. Semper Fi...

They played Full Metal Jacket during my bus ride to Marine Corps boot camp in 2007! Not only that...but during my time in service aboard Camp Pendleton, CA, I walked into the commissary and randomly met and spoke with The Marine icon himself. An awesome conversation was had between us. That day I met an amazing man and Marine, leaving with a personalized, signed poster from the man himself. RIP Gunny. Semper Fi!

There are only two times I've ever cried uncontrollably: 9/11 and the day that The Gunny left us. God bless you Gunny. Semper Fi 🇺🇸🇺🇸

When I got to Vietnam, a 19 year old, straight out of the Southern West Virginia hills a Staff Sergeant ( I will not use his name because I have not asked permission to use it) took me under his wing. During in country training (30 days) he gave me instruction on how to stay alive and do my job as a Special Actions troop. This was a sniper-ambush unit and we would go out, search for enemy units and kill as many as we could or stay quite and call in artillery or airstrikes on them. We had many hand to hand actions. This Staff Sergeant was my team leader for several months. His leadership, his dedication, to the mission and love for his men brought us through some really tough times. His example inspired bravery in his men, including me, even when we were scared to death. He lead from the front and never, never asked us to do anything that he would not do himself. We are friends and brothers to this day. I have to be honest, when I was in combat in Vietnam, I did not fight for Mom, Apple Pie and the Flag, although that was the reason for my visit to Vietnam, I was fighting for my fellow team members. I did not want to let them down, I was afraid not to do my best for fear it would cost them their lives. It was not about me it was about them. This is the love my Staff Sergeant instilled in all of us. His strength of charter, his bravery, leadership, and outstanding knowledge, and skill got most of us through Vietnam with our lives. He is a true American hero.

CN - That is truly a moving and amazing story. My Uncle (Mom's Brother) served in Vietnam and has said almost nothing of his time there. (in my presence) No one except those who were there can or will understand what you went through. I can only say, God Bless You and Yours, and THANK YOU for Your service and sacrifice.

Gunny, a man like you taught me how to stay alive in Vietnam. We are still great friends to this day, 52 years later. America needed and still needs men like you. We miss you Gunny but you will live on in our hearts.

Our biggest issue is its out there, but no one is helping understand how to utilize our resources. Then they make the paperwork so difficult you eventually just give up. It takes a veteran working in the system to help a Veteran.

That's not what Gunny was saying, he was meaning nonmilitary people would think the Government would help these men and women , our Government is the same. Thing's that should be in place to assist them like Veteran's Affairs have funding cut and offices closed. Like Travis Frinzell don't assume just because one never served they don't understand, I have seen and heard military member's cut other's down and insinuate they were weak because they have PTSD. Civilian's do more for Veteran's then most give them credit for, most donate their time, money and anything else they can. The thing is most don't see it because their not glory seeker's. The only one in the State's who truly doesn't understand or care for Veteran's is the Orange freak running your Country, maybe he should start caring for the people of the US. I am pretty sure the $73 million border wall being constructed along a 20-mile stretch of the U.S.-Mexico border near Santa Teresa, N.M could be used to help Vet's better.

I had nightmares as a kid after watching Gunny on 'Full Metal Jacket'. In my country, we are conscripted at 18. I couldn't sleep for weeks prior to enlistment, I was so afraid I would get a drill instructor like Gunny and he would give us hell like how he did on FMJ. He's a legend indeed. 😎

Marine's never die, they're just redeployed 😏

He was the grandfather that everybody wants to have. He will be sadly missed RIP Gunny 😔

I just came across this tribute to Gunny, To my surprise, at 7:37 into the video there is the photo of me presenting Gunny with the Our Nation's Flag. This happened on top of the Al Faw Palace in (Victory Base) Iraq in 08. Everything you have heard about this man and his character is true. A true patriot, amazing and incredible man.

@@jeffsanders663 He certainly was gracious, I had an opportunity to spend 3 days with him. Most "Stars would want to stay are require to stay in the DVQ (Distinguished Visitors Quarters). Gunny, turned this down, He and his crew wanted to sleep with the Troops in the Open Squad Bay. He would talk with every Soldier, Sailor, Marine, and Airmen. I was given many photos of his trip. But it was an honor for us to meet an man of Charter and Honor. I also thank his family for sharing his time with us.

My son took a picture of me and Gunny at a GI JOE Weekend of Heroes show in Ontario, California a few years back. My son and son-in-law both bought Gunny's DVDs. He looked like a really tough US Marine to me. As we moved on, he shook my hand and said Semper Fi to me. There's only one Gunny and I'm sure a lot of his fans will miss him. RIP Gunny.

R. Lee Ermey was the reason i joined the UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS... I LOVED IT AND MISS IT

I had the honor of meeting the Gunny at Shot Show one year. The line took forever. Turns out it was because he didn’t rush anyone. He talked like an old friend. I’ll never forget getting to shake his hand and talk for a bit with such a great human being.

No mention of him being the only Marine to be given a promotion after leaving the Corps. He was only a E-6, then made an official E-7 after his service

Maybe cause others have been honorary given a rank title & some without ever actually serving? Jim Nabors, for one, earned two titles, that of Lance Corporal & later Corporal, the first one came from the Commandant of the Marine Corps James L. Jones, who also awarded Gunny his rank title. I served under CMC Jones, he had been my Battalion Commander with 3d Battalion, 9th Marines, he later served under President Obama's administration. @@JohnSmith-uy7sv That is the single most important decision a man can make, that is to ask Jesus into your heart. Without Jesus there is no heaven, only separation from God for eternity. I hope that R. Lee Ermey had a personal relationship with Jesus before he died. None of us deserves heaven, we deserve hell, however Jesus took care of that on the cross, then his last words: It Is Finished" meant the task he came for was completed. Now it is up to each of us to ask Him to live in us and change us to what he wants us to be. Thank God I can say I did that at 23 and still going at 64. I am not perfect as is everyone, none of us will go to heaven except through Jesus Christ!!!!!

All who served are family. That's the attitude Gunny Ermey held, and it's the same for every honest veteran.

Maybe some don't know, but R. Lee Ermey was not going to be in Full Metal Jacket, originally. He was there to teach the actor that was going to be in the movie, as the Drill Sergeant, how to do it. They ended up putting R. Lee Ermey in the movie, because no one could do it like him. RIP, Sir!

I was at Ft Huachucha in 2012 for an electronic warfare course prior to deployment. We were treated to some inspirational words that the Gunny recorded for Task Force Paladin. There were problems with people not understanding the Counter IED systems and jammers and refusing to turn them in in theater. "The Gear works, trust it. But it won't work if you people don't turn the fucking things on!" R.I.P. Gunny

It's sad but true that our government doesn't take care of our veterans like they should.i will remember you always Gunny.

I met him at the Deadwood Lodge while he was filming a motorcycle commercial.He took the time to shake hands and talk to everyone. he even invited us to be in the commercial with him. HELL OF A MAN R.I.P. GUNNY

I wasn’t aware he was actually a veteran, but I’m so not surprised. He always brought such a realism to those roles. A tremendously talented character actor.

This man may have been terrifying on the outside, but he was a man of honor to everyone. God, treat him well.

It is of course the most important decision to have Jesus in our hearts, but it is also Love that carries this message to all others. R. Lee Ermey either knew Jesus or did not. God judges each on that merit alone. I am not sure if you are a veteran, but in most peoples hearts we would like to think that R. Lee Ermey asked Jesus into his heart at some point in his life. I would be suggesting readers to read the scriptures so they can learn that Jesus is the Only one that can save their souls. I am both a veteran and retired law enforcement officer, but yes, it is as you say. These things will Not get me into heaven. I took care of that when I was 23 and accepted Jesus into my heart. Faith and Love is what will help us after all If we accepted Jesus!!!

@Neil Ouellette I always joked with my buddies whenever that part of the Hymn was sung, that after the countless hours standing guard duty in all kinds of conditions, I sure hope God has something better for us to do in eternity that stand guard duty while the rest of the people get to party and enjoy eternal life lol.

That would be "Sir yes Sir", I did the same, cleaning my pistol in my Sheriff's Uniform when my daughter's date arrived. I questioned him about where his hands would be and stated "My Daughter will be home at 10PM, correct?" He replied "yes Sir". My daughter was mad at me for that, but later understood why I did it. I also later warned him as they were engaged "lay a hand on my Daughter and they will not find your grave in the vast desert around this city" He has never hit her or abused her or the grandkids!!!

October 19, 2021, and I’m glad Gunny isn’t around to see what the world has come to, but at the same time I miss him, he was a true inspiration to me as a kid, and if I’m being honest the world needs him now more than ever

The Gunny loved his Marine Corps and that's why we loved him. To have such passion about being a Marine and being a Vietnam Veteran, is just an inspiration. Dear Gunny, thanks for everything you did and continue to do. Rest In Peace Leatherneck...

Love that he owned a true 70’s van with a mural on the side.

Not many celebrity passing have hurt, but this one really truly did hurt a lot

R. Lee was a man like no other. He was a great man. This country lost a wonderful man with a great soul. His like shall never grace this world again. He loved his country, and he loved the Marines. While it is true that he was an actor for many years, he cared more about being a marine, than he ever did about being an actor. But being an actor allowed him the ability to help others, and spread awareness. May you rest in peace sir. You will truly be missed. It was an honor and a privilege sir.

A man who will always be loved and missed by freedom loving Americans. The greatest honor of my life has been working with the military as a civilian contractor. Respect, Honor and never forget. RIP Gunny!

Gunny is no exception......he was the poster boy of a true classic military man of his time, and it set many a young boys, to go off to be great men through the Military. I, for one, am truly proud to have served as well, and the pride that goes along with the distinction of being a part of one of the Greatest Organizations Of America. Kori, it’s Drill Instructor , l saw a lot of recruits made that mistake while l was in boot camp. They paid for that with continuous reps of “Bends and Thrust, Push-ups, Mountain Climbers, and Front Straddle Hops” as punishment.

Before he played a Drill Sgt in "Full Metal Jacket" he played one in "The Boys From Company C" many years earlier.

I liked his role on toy story

I had the honor of meeting him during a car convention 18 years ago, as young Airman we asked him to chew us out but he declined for the sake of the nearby children.

Ill never forget the time on mail call when he answered a question, and Im originally from a small town. He said "I got a question from Derrick in Negley, Ohio..... wherever the Hell that is"

So very missed!

I love the fact that many years ago if the youth in America we’re having trouble or causing trouble and not quite able to fit in the judges would always give him the choice jail or military. I don’t think they do that anymore and I can’t understand why. The jails might not be so full and we might actually get some good soldiers out of the deal.

I loved watching Gunny, brought back memories of my grandfather . Now brings back memories of Gunny too. Rest in peace Lee Ermey

Whilst I never had the honor nor privilege to meet the Gunny let me tell you his legacy will live on not just in his beloved USMC but in all of our outstanding men and women who wear the sacred cloth that is the uniform of the greatest military the world has ever known! Semper Fi GySgt Rest easy and in peace sir!

I just stood in my kitchen and watched the whole of this, tears in my eyes, oven on ready for it to warm up but turned it off to not miss any of this awesome tribute. As a former British soldier I respected, admired and loved The Gunny even though I’d never met him or thought I ever would, that didn’t matter. From his movie appearances to Mail Call to this he should always be remembered firstly as a respected Marine but also as a humanitarian who’s love of the military superseded all.

RLE is a great American hero. His acting was natural. He inspired me to join the military and after multiple tours I’m honored to serve like he did.

Once a Marine, Always a Marine. Definition of, “Semper Fi!”

I loved the Gunny! And so did my dad, who retired from the US Army in 1975 at the same rank as Gunny but in the Army its called Sergeant First Class. Dad also was a Drill Instructor, or Drill Sergeant as they are called in the Army, preparing young soldiers for survival in Vietnam and going there himself with them. My dad, Sgt. 1st Class Robert E Burch loved the Gunnys DI "role" as he was the real deal and he related to him. But he enjoyed all of his shows as well as did I. I was saddened by The Gunny's passing earlier this year. My dad passed in 2008 and watching the Gunny always made me smile and think of dad. Especially when I'd hear the Gunny use the phrase " theres no way in my my military mind" how he did, when I heard that phrase as a kid, It was never a good thing, it meant I screwed up. I sure miss hearing it now though and there is no way in my military mind I will ever forget Dad or Gunny R. Lee Ermey! I know the streets of Heaven are more secure with them both there, but my world was a neyter place with them both right here. Semper Fi Gunny, RIP! You were a great man and human!!!

@@jaydouglas8845 Thanks, I had not known that, I was looking into the rank of Gunny Sergeant, my dad held the same rank in the Army where its called Sgt 1st Class, and found a link to notable gunny sgts and it stated that the gunny was honorably promoted after his retirement. Thats unusual!

Jesus Christ changed my life forever and eternity. He is the only one who offered and died on a cross to save me from my sins. What did Ermey do for my salvation? Nothing.

If you see a homeless veterans please help. If you never have been in war it's hard to realize how tuff it really was. Take it from me it puts you in a depressed position you never want to experience.

The "Gunny" did not leave us. He is still here in his movies, his stories and our memories. It's like he will never leave us. There are more out there like him that have protected us and still do to this day. We need to remember those and honor them as well as we honor the "Gunny". Semper fi. I only wish I had someone like him when I was going through basic.

He was the best damn Vietnam veteran rest in peace

The u.s.a. truley lost a wonderful soul when R. Lee left this world. His inspiration, and patriotism truley inspired my military service. I joined to fallow in the footsteps of great men, to truley understand what it meant to honor our flag. There's not enough words to describe gunny. Truley a sad day hearing of his passing. God bless his family, and friends... Never forget!!!

I didn't join the CORPS to follow him. But my Senior Drill Instructor, was EXACTLY LIKE HIM. CUT AND DRY.

The Gunny was true to his family...The Corps always comes first regardless......

This Man Educated Me Through Many Years. He Was Tough, But Reasonable, Smart, But Strong. A Good Man Deserves A Good Funeral. R.I.P R. Lee Ermey.
