The Guide To Create Your Perfect Kickdrum | Thomann

Музыка

Jonas is deep diving into his thoughts about creating the perfect kickdrum for your track. Just because a kick seems perfect doesn't mean it's perfect for your track or can simply be exchanged because everything is a result of the context this video finds out why so.

the perfect kick drum can only be crafted once the rest of the tune is complete, as the 'perfect' kick drum, by definition, must sit in complete harmony and sympathy with the rest of the orchestration. and we all know most of us cant be bothered by that stage. but it is worth it.

great video. in my opinion the 707 is a great kick to start with and especially for modern or melodic styles. good click, has punch, and not too low. it’s also short so it gets out of the way quickly

For me, i think the most difficult part of production is finding the right kick. Nice video!

For me, the most complex relationship between kick and bass is in the dub techno genre. and I’m not talking about the usual 909 kick, but about the dull deep kick and deep bass. this is a mystery to me. 😮

@@ThomannSynthesizers Almost all Deepchords stuff has that dull deep kick and bass. As you said "almost invisible kind of groove generator" For example kzread.info/dash/bejne/o3uEvNKrZaufg84.html. But my absolute favorite is kzread.info/dash/bejne/pnuZz5dtitjam6w.html

Great video. My advice is get the VST Chop Suey by Dawsome. Placing your transient / (body) / sub sequentially rather than in parallel (layering) was a revelation to me. My kicks never sounded so clean and tight: No more phasing issues.

I think the kick is the most unimportant element of a track. How many times have you heard a song and thought "wow, everything's so good but the kick ruins it for me"? You can have a phenomenal kick but if the other tracks aren't great the whole song is shit. But if you have some amazing tracks on top of a lame kick the song can still be great. Of course that's just my opinion. A lot of people happily dance to songs that have amazing kicks and not a lot more going on.

i start EQing kickdrum from highs to lows. Highpass filter starting from high, mid+highs and after the lows. Like this I know how much bass would be enough with the rest. I hope this is helpful!

What is your technique to send mid and hi only to reverb?

  • @ThomannSynthesizers

Heyy, depending on the Kick I am using, bust most easy is if a have different layers. I’ll have a send channel with reverb 100% wet and send the mid signal to it + sidechaining it to the mid signal itself to clean it a little. On the reverb itself I’ll take the lows off to avoid muddy frequencies flying around. If it’s not layered then you can group multiband dynamics into low/mid/high and create a rack on the the channel you want. Duplicate it there and have one with 100% reverb and one without. Adjust the volume to your likes :)
