Bessegen Packet by Beitostølen Resort: www.beitostolen.com/besseggen...
We do the hike over Besseggen which is one of the most popular and spectacular hikes of Norway. This is most complete guide to this hike. We did the hike with Ørjan Venås, who did Besseggen nearly everyday.
This is not an easy hike. If you haven't done many mountain hikes, watch this video first. It will give you many good tips by the most expirienced person you will find on this route.
Ørjan suggests that you do Bitihorn first, if you havn't done mountain hikes before: • Bitihorn | Jotunheimen

One of the best tours, I have ever made. But listen to the guide. It is not easy. Be prepared.

I took the hike last summer! What a hike! Fantastic view! Going over the blade was a bit uncomfortable, but I managed to climb over the blade! Not for people afraid of heights! As a Norwegian I am very proud over our fantastic nature. 😊

i'm afraid of heights. should I not do it? will I fall over? what is the most difficult part?

@@doucheFTW If you are very afraid of heights it can be challenging. The most challenging part is over the blade, but it is not that narrow as it looks from far away. Bring lots of water and food. The hike is around 6-7 hours so it is an advantage if you are in a good form. I was not, so I was pretty exhausted after the trip. First part is very tuff for your legs.

@@doucheFTW That is a good question. Depends on how afraid you are of heights. I don’t like heights myself, but as long as you don’t walk near the edges, but walks in the middle I think you should be fine. Watch some videos from others and decide for yourself.

Nice.
Did it last weekend, I was surprised by the "climb" part as I thought it would be just walking, tried to pass that part asap as I considered dangerous if it would start raining while passing by the stone "ladder" Rewarding views.

Nice. But last weekend was nice weather. I was on Bitihorn last Sunday, and it was very warm.
What about starting at Ghendesheim, walking around bessvattnet, over the edge and back?
@XploreNorway

That’s totally possible, but you won’t have the nice views from the first part of the hike. It is also possible to start from Bessheim.

I went this route as I heard it is the traditional way of doing the hike. Going that way I had an incredible view into the heart of Jotunheimen, and I doubt doing the route in this video could be any better. I believe people choose the way shown in the video because you wont have to stress about reaching the ferry back to Gjendesheim. If you dont catch the last boat you will have to stay at Memerubu until the next day

I did the hike 43 years ago (!) starting at Gjendesheim, finishing for the day at Memurubu, where we stayed for the night. This video brings back great memories!

Awesome....!! Thanks for sharing 👍
I was on July 1, 2023 on Besseggen and made my way back from the ridge. I'm amazed how the Besseggen staff couldn't install a ladder or a chain or rope for the ridge since it's not safe for climbing. When you get in front of the ridge, then you will really realize it and you will weigh the words in my comment.

Besseggen is owned by nobody, so there is no staff for it. The other thing is that this place is inside the Nationalpark, so any changes have to be approved by the "Statsforvalter" (the responsible authorities), and they are very conversative. Ørjan told me that if the infrastructure would have to be built today, none would be approved, that includes the boat and the hostel are Memurubu and Gjendebu. They are only allowed because they were there from before the Nationalpark was formed. Also the amount of boat tour to Gjendebu is limited to twice a day. However changes to the trail are done in case of accident. Just before the ridge, along Bessvatnet, there is a memorial plate on the rock, where someone fell and died. Afterwards the trail was moved along Bessvatnet, and not over the ridge above it. For Norwegians nature as to be expirienced as is, without modification.

@@XploreNorway I have seen saturday kids, girls without proper gear and imagine weather changing fast, high winds, rain. Can be sleepery and a rooe or a chain on that ridge is safe for most of the people. Making that trail safer bring more people, more money for kiosks, hotels and ferry.
Does anyone know if car parking is free on Gjendesheim?
@XploreNorway

Only for hotel guests. For people doing Besseggen, you have to park now at the big parking place and take the shuttle bus, the shuttle bus is included in parking fee. The parking place next to the boat pier is only max. 2h. This has changed since I recorded the video in 2020. Check here: www.visitgjende.no/
