Wow, Keston. I’m blown away! This is the video I’ve been waiting for. I’ll probably watch it 6 more times to instill the lessons. I even took notes 😂 Each star had something I could relate to in my desires but I especially found the “11-year old me” and “THE copy”m relatable. I like how you break those stars down and give examples. Special shout-out to the bonus tip “Chase lost treasure” I love how this one is like a gut check where you won’t know if you needed it in your collection until it’s gone. I have a hard time letting go of some books but considering that I can always get them again (considering I’m collecting mostly Bronze Age books) makes it easier to let go of and gives me courage to take that leap of faith to let it go just to see if I really wanted it in the first place. Thank you so much for making this video 👏 🙇🏻‍♂️

Thanks Dan, for the wonderful comment. I pinned it. Most of us -- and definitely including myself here -- buy books as a mix of collecting and investing. It was nice to center a video squarely on the collecting side. Thanks for the inspiration, and I'm glad you are finding the video useful 🙂

I've been slowly re buying comics from my childhood that were lost or stolen. Holding some of these books in my hand gives me such a hit of nostalgia. I get a dopamine high every time I remember a book I used to have and can actually track a copy down. This is my forever collection.

Hi, Slappy. Thanks for checking out the video. Yeah, there's something about trying to recapture our childhood. I can get up in the investment side of comic books but the most important comics are usually the ones I had a connection with as a kid.

The memories one for me are the silver age Batman and Hawkman my cousin gave to me when I was around 8 years old. I think I was supposed to return them at the end of the summer but for some reason I ended up keeping them. Even though one of them is Batman 181, I would never part with any of them. Interestingly, when I recently got back into the hobby the uncompleted run (many of them) was my nemesis. My greatest satisfaction was finding a beautiful copy of Gilgamesh #3 (a Jim Starlin miniseries). I waited over 30 years to complete that miniseries and it probably took so long because not many people had heard of it. As always, I thoroughly enjoyed this video - thanks Keston. Looking forward to more content in 2023.

Great video! My dad introduced my brother and me to comic books in the early 60's as we were just starting to learn how to read. Since I no longer had them I started collecting slabbed copies of the ones I liked best. The one comic I regretted selling was GSX-1 which I had gotten by mail order from Mile High Comics in 1982. I sold it along with my Uncanny X-Men collection to my LCS in 1991 after leaving the hobby in 1988. In 2005 I learned about graded comics and a CGC 9.2 GSX-1 was my first slab. My second slab was AF-15 in 2009.

Similar to your GI Joe book, the two I have in my collection (ASM 40 and 53) that have such a great emotional attachment to. I didn’t get them from a store, but my grandpa gave them to me when I was just a wee lad around 6-7 years old. I have kept them ever since and will never part with them. He’s the guy that got me into collecting 30 years ago 💥

Hi Kryptonite! Totally agree. One of my favorite parts of the collecting journey is discovering what books I truly care about. I pay attention to what serious, devoted collectors enjoy. That exposes me to more genres and more books; some of those books I end up liking, others not so much. Regardless, nobody can tell me what to love :-)

Really enjoyed this video. I’ve done similar videos over the years and plan to do more this year. One piece of advice I give to collectors that ask, don’t fall into completionism! Unless thats what you love of the hobby. Marie Kondo’s philosophy is kinda what my early videos focussed on. Should have patented the phrase “does it bring you joy”

Hi Luther. Thanks so much. Yeah...I don't think completing runs is the best investment decision but -- as you say -- sometimes that's what brings a collector joy. For example, I have all the Xela books (37 in total) but a trying to get each at a 9.0 or higher. It's been fun/frustrating because it's such a tough goal. That's the exception though for me.

Great content, thanks for doing this. I find this has been my exact journey / dilemma since I recently got back into this after 30 years. Everytime I go through my collection I hold on to a few and have those memories from my childhood - remembering a copy I bought off the newsstand or from a comic show. I remember buying a copy of Silver Surfer #1 for $20 and it's at best a 3.0, but I find I cannot part with it because it was my first silver age book. There were several ASM covers that I liked and always wanted, and I've picked up about half a dozen of those. But my ultimate end game now with everything is that AF15. I'm pretty much willing to part with anything to get to that. I never thought I could own that as a kid, and even for the past 30 years I'd have thought that impossible ... but as you said, when I go through my books and hold some, they just don't have that impact anymore. I'd part with my FF48 and ASM14 in order to get that AF15. Anyway, sorry for the rambling. Great content per ususal, sir. Really appreicate the way you present things.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts TK! It's fun to think about our collection and what we have to keep vs what we can let go of to get other books. From what you've said, I would definitely KEEP the Silver Surfer #1, no matter what. The few hundred dollars you would get for it (or even $1,000 plus at some future time) will likely not offset the emotional loss. Good luck with the AF15. It is a great book to have, the ultimate gem of the silver age and the Holy Grail of most Spider-man fans! 🙂

Great advice! I always have a tinge of regret when I sell a book, but I’m getting better at it. I just traded/sold a Fantastic Four 18 at a show last weekend, but got cash and a Spider-Man 33, which I’ve always wanted… also, a customer offered an X-Men 4, which my brother and I bought. Great video! Satisfying that 11 year old boy in you is so important. There are two comics that will never leave my collection - one is the Archie Comics Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures #1, the book that got me into comics. I read and re-read it so many times it's pretty beat up but to me it's a treasure. The other is X-Force #1. I still remember going to the newsagency with my mum and brothers to buy it and the sense of excitement and wonder I had when I got home and opened it. Yes, there are 7,999,999 other copies of it out there but it's priceless to me.
