Masterful spare prose like the landscape it depicts. Detail of mundane life worked in matter of factly but artfully. And that stomach sinking dread finale…

I like this story. I had heard it before.
I wish I understood the context better, geographical and historical. Still, I was drawn in to the story.
So, did they guy who wrote the message on the blackboard think the teacher handed the murderer over to the police, and they wanted vengeance? Or, did the murdered guy's family know that the murderer was set free and they wanted vengeance? Either way, the teacher is in big trouble.
