THE GUARD DONKEY

Despite being the original beast of burden, the ass, the burro, the plain ol' donkey get a rough run in the perception stakes. But one NSW women has created a sanctuary for this red headed stepson of the animal kingdom, as well as a job. TODAY's Mike Dalton discovers the concept of the guard donkey...

    When I first moved back to Florida, I was amazed at all of the cattle ranches in the central Florida area. As i drove around more and more, I noticed every ranch had one donkey. Now I know why.

    In the uk it used to be the same too and it was considered that a donkey in with the herd stopped the cows from aborting their calves. Science or old wives tale/superstition - i don't know!

    Donkeys are used to guard calfs and sheep here in Ireland from feral/stray/loose dogs. They're extremely tough and can kill quite easily. They're also very strong as they are still used to pull turf carts and plough fields

    Predators typically expect prey animals to runaway. That usually emboldens them to attack. Donkeys will go right at the predator, which confuses the predator. Donkeys are strong, fast, aggressive and fearless. They also have a strong bite. Their hides are very tough as well. They can easily pick up a dog or coyote by the head and rag doll them. They will also kick and trample them with their sharp hooves. They have even been know to take down larger predators like hyenas.

My friend had a pitbull, when his dog got out of the truck at my buddy's place, the dog started messing with my friends donkey, my buddy warned him to get his dog, the little donkey had sprung a leak from the pit biting it, about 8 seconds later that pit was dead.

    I've heard dream stories about guard donkeys and horror stories about them. It seems there are too many that kill goats, especially baby goats. Do you even realize how many dogs have killed livestock? Of course livestock guardian dogs have an instinct to protect, but you still have to train them well so they harm your animals. Don’t take them for granted.

  • @farmtalk491

    @farmtalk491

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@yeetngreet148 Yes. Neighborhood dogs killed all my in-law's goats and they were big goats. I assume you meant "don't" harm your animals. People have bred livestock guardian dogs for thousands of years to have the right instincts to protect. There are some LGD that are failures even when raised right, but most of them seem to do pretty well. Most of mine have worked out. I wish our ancestors had also bred a line of livestock guardian donkeys with all the right instincts. Donkeys live a lot longer than dogs and are usually much cheaper to feed as long as you have pasture. You also don't have the added expenses of heartworm and flea treatment.

I may be wrong and if you've seen it a donkey be nice around dogs or calves then you can test it I'm just going by what I've seen on other videos

    Anyone who thinks that prey animal can be used to protect from predators is rather daft. Donkeys are NOT guardians. This is the worst tripe ever used about donks. Who is responsible for your livestock? You. Want a great guardian for your livestock? Get a livestock guardian dog. Oh, yeah - your guardian donkey may kill your lambs, kids and calves too.
