I personally think a lot of the vitriol aimed at Todd is memes, but honestly, I think the genuine hate for him comes, unfortunately from him being seen as a bit of a public figure due to him always being up on stage presenting their games, so sadly, he's going to be blamed for the game not living up to the hype. As a few comments have already said, Pete Hines is the guy to blame for games from Bethesda not being up to scratch.

I love the 'Todd Howard Song - It Just Works' and every time I hear something Bethesda related that I don't like, I rise my fist angrily into the air and scream internally 'Todd Howard!' or just 'Todd!'. Still, I like Todd, he seems like a nice guy who is passionate about what he does. I respect him and am happy when he shows up somewhere. And till we know he is responsible for something, I don't harbor ill will for him and when I discuss something that I don't like about TES or Fallout it's always about Bethesda itself, not him. It's sad that people get angry at him specific, something like this sadly happens, if you become virtually the face of an company.

That hatred for Todd Howard stems mostly from the fact that he's the figurehead of Bethesda, he's the one hyping games with his infamous lines; so when people are angry at Bethesda for messing something up, the first person they come to associate with Bethesda is Todd...

  • @MZZenyl

Howard seems pretty genuine. Can't hate on the guy for hyping things up when that is literally part of his job, and he's damned good at it. It isn't his fault when, for a multitude of reasons, the product doesn't live up to the hype. Hell, the guy even plays into the banter that surrounds him, like when he admitted that sometimes it doesn't just work.

  • @lostbutfreesoul

    @lostbutfreesoul

Sort of agree. One shouldn't allow the hype guy to be the 'executive in charge,' especially if they don't have the final say. All that will do is give false confidence to the people observing, whom won't know which 'role' is presenting which piece of information. The viewer/listener/customer will always assume the information is coming from the one who has made the decisions, while those running the company will always state it came from the hype guy and nothing more. So when things are then changed... we consumers blame the 'executive in charge' for what they said hyping it all up! So who made Todd go out there? Who thought it would be a great idea to blend these roles? Was... it... Todd? **Gasps** Probably not, actually... he has bosses too. But I wonder... how hard did he say no, or did he also think it was a great idea to go out on stage?

Todd’s strength is also his weakness, he’s over ambitious, games like Oblivion blew everyone’s mind on what’s possible with an open world RPG and it’s because was willing to go the extra mile with that game, but because of this, he overhyped stuff and sometimes affects the game too like Fallout 4 having a voice a protagonist, it’s great in theory but it just limits the RPG mechanics and dialogue options

He does have a memeable face 😂 Being serious, this is an excellent take Cantina! The man has his problems, but it’s similar to politics where he has become the guy everyone blames. And when someone is blamed for everything, what they do doesn’t matter. He’s damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t. Just to be clear; not saying he is problematic. But, because everyone blames him for everything he has no reason to take accountability for mistakes. People will just move on to something else they blame him for. Most of which he doesn’t deserve. Errors aside, he had an impact on the gaming world. As much as we rip on Skyrim for not being an RPG, it’s still an excellent game on it’s own. Rant done 😅

There's one thing that every single Bethesda game lacks besides morrowind. Immersion. Every single Bethesda game has very similar weapons, armor, dungeons, enemies, etc. Even most of the rare weapons and armors look identical, it feels less rewarding, and repetitive. That's pretty much the main issue I have with Bethesda, it leaves modders having to fix all their mistakes, Bugs, even scripts and sure, it's cool that mods are allowed, but they could put more work into their products, hell, a small team of people even converted morrowind into the oblivion engine almost completely finished in merely a decade

Todd Howard made RadiantAI out to be something like real-life people schedules, he hyped the idea out of the stratosphere in the same way that game journalists did regarding No Man's Sky "fitting an entire explorable universe inside of a game" as if no gamer had ever heard of a fucking RNG or procedural generation before. Remember F3 having 200 endings, or F4 having ~110k lines of dialogue? LYING BY OMISSION IS LYING, it isn't suddenly not-lying because Todd decided to put 199 empty slides into the game, or that 100k of those 110k lines are actors saying 'Yes' or 'No'. Todd is a liar in the same way that selling a picture of a boat to someone who is trying to buy a boat and saying "yea but this is what you bought bro!" is lying.

A lot of Windhelm was cut, in fact lots of unfinished and test assets for Windhelm were accidentally packaged within the finished game's files but not implemented in the game (a full folder full of unfinished or test meshes with some pointing towards textures that don't exist in the files, multiple unused textures including a quite nice door that modders have since reused) as well as a cut NPC "Sulvar the Steady" whose job was to watch *"The Wheel"* which was a huge frozen water wheel attached to the outside of Windhelm which Sulvar's job was to watch to make sure it didn't unfreeze for some still unknown reason, said wheel shows up consistently in a place of prominence in Windhelm's concept art. Of course Windhelm was also meant to have an Arena like in Oblivion, it was going to have a completely unique prison system tied into the arena, sort of like how Markarth has Cidhna Mine. As you say as well, it can't be understated just how much of the Civil War was cut, its scale was huge but almost the entire thing had to be cut in an almost completely finished state because it was so complicated in how it functioned and they couldn't fix critical bugs before the 11/11/11 release date and so everything except the 3 Capital Sieges was cut. For those who don't know, you were originally going to be able to lose sieges, as well as have sieges across every hold capital (so 9 vs the 3 the game released with), with a back and forth as you win and lose different cities.

I suppose his main problem is he tends to overhype and underdeliver with certain things, but even so it's not as if he has the final say in everything (76 for example had ZeniMax written all over it). Still, I take anything he says with a grain a salt. As far as Starfield goes, I'm cautiously optimistic it won't end up being another F76 or Cyberpunk. Hopefully Microsoft's funding will pay off.

@@carlosleyva-calistenia6400 My belief is that because it's most likely set in the Iliac Bay like Daggerfall was, then like Daggerfall it'll need to cover both High Rock and the Northern Coast of Hammerfell, because you can't cover High Rock and not the Northern Coast of Hammerfell, however if you cover the Iliac Bay you have to cover the actual body of water that makes up the bay and the islands within it, which means they need to have some system for sailing and given that it's a Bethesda game that'll mean they need to actually add stuff under the water in the region. If you cover the northern coast of Hammerfell you have to cover the rest of it as well, as there is a lack of natural barriers between Northern Hammerfell and the main body of the region. As such the game map size would be by far the largest hand-made map they've ever made, and given the legacy of Daggerfall being the largest video game map at the time (until Minecraft's infdev alpha update in 2010, and is still one of the largest), they likely want to increase the game scale map scale in relativity to the lore as every game outside of Daggerfall is not to scale. We know TES 6 is going to be much larger in terms of map scale to existing TES games, the comment "If you heard what we want to make with this game you would say 'Hey, you don't even have the technology to do that'" is likely in relation to a fact revealed in another comment about using procedural generation in TES 6, which they did in Daggerfall to get lore-accurate scales, which seems like what they intend to do for TES 6 while still retaining a level of landscape detail not seen in current large scale procedural generation in games which is the specific thing that people don't have the technology to do currently.

My issue with Bethesda Studio's is that they are using Papyrus with 'Gamebryo' and that their dev's are delivering sub par work because of this unique code language combined with an engine that's always at least 10 steps behind the competition, and that asks for the most insane solutions to things that are simple in other engines. They lose so much time on mundane bs, its not even funny.

It’s interesting how not many people, for some reason, seem to realize that a lot of final project decisions come from the higher ups - and they are not usually known to make the best decisions. Many don’t even have ANY work experience with game design to understand how things work and that everything takes time. Maybe only the very basics - but that’s barely enough to “swim through” the topic efficiently. And in a lot of cases you present a concept or an idea, but the big wigs say “No, we want it this way” and there’s nothing you can do. You are being paid to do what they want, after all, even if you think that what they want is absolute baloney.

3dfx wasn't just successful, it was *the* big name in 3D acceleration at the time. Nvidia cards existed, but the smart money was on 3dfx's Voodoo line, and everyone making 3D games supported them. If the devs had the money, sure, they also supported other APIs (DirectX or OpenGL), but if you had to choose just one, you went with 3dfx's Glide. And Bethesda wasn't a big or successful company at the time, and very likely didn't have the time nor money to spend on supporting more than one API. And even that Glide-only approach that was less of a problem than it seems in hindsight. DirectX was only barely a thing, and was limited to Windows, which was a fairly niche platform for games compared to DOS at that point, and OpenGL was less still pretty primitive and support was spotty. Yeah, it stinks that Redguard is such a bear to get running properly on modern systems, but it's very much a product of that whole era of PC gaming. It's a bit of a lost generation all around.

The 9000 objects quote is from The Making Of Oblivion. He says "Our artists have painstakingly modeled over 9000 objects." I believe part of Bethesda's missteps lately have been Todd being stretched too thin. Over the years Todd has gotten higher and higher in the hierarchy at Bethesda with that comes more responsibility and less time to manage projects at a smaller level. Games with his name attached to them having varying levels of his involvement causing a negative perception when one of them doesn't do well. I do believe that some of the decisions from the past do sit on Todd's shoulders though. He is Bethesda's guiding light/visionary the try to attach him to a bunch of things hoping it will rub of on those projects. Bethesda has lost a lot of the people who shaped what there games are today, which I believe has created a bit of an identity crisis with their games at times.

One of the biggest problems is that he isn't even lying. It is often just people understanding things the way they want to hear it. Yes there are lies. But not all of them are. Often it is indeed just expectations that get blown way out of proportion through journalists and what not. Good example? Fallout 76. 16 times the detail. Everyone thinks instantly: "OH! 16 times the graphical prowess! So it must look super realistic!" While detail actually means things like buttons on a console. Clutter, junk items. Things that make the surroundings look lived in or alive. And that is an absolute check compared to Fallout 4. There you ran through open spaces with absolutely nothing in it. In Fallout 76 you can't run for 5 seconds without toppling over another scenery put together.

@@xIJudaS Okay let us break it down then. 16 times the detail. With detail isn't meant graphics, that is what the monkey brain news articles with no clue about what is meant there instantly understood and therefore everyone was reading that. 16 times the detail means detail in world building. Clutter, cracks in the street, cars, garbage laying around. Whatever you would think you should see, when a bomb goes off at a hardware store and how it should look like. The hardware store isn't empty, all the tools and what not should be laying everywhere. That was detail and that was absolutely there. 4 time the size of Fallout 4? Come on. Even someone like you has to admit that and say that it was indeed 4 times as big if it comes to the map. All new rendering and landscape technology. Absolutely was there. Never ever had a Fallout title fresh from the devs looked so good. Believable lighting. Landscape looked really nice and believable. Nothing was worse.

While I agree that calling it lies is definitely a bit hyperbolic and has become unchill over the years, it's still absolutely the case that he has often went up on stage or into interviews representing an upcoming game, and said things that are just false. It may have been true at the time. It may have been planned and later cut. But at the end of the day things were said about the upcoming game that ended up not being true. And that is a problem. Players absolutely have the right to be upset about that. I think it should also be noted though that it's something he and Bethesda have been a lot better at managing in recent years, simply by not talking as much about games as early on in development. Fewer things end up changing or being cut between when he first opens his mouth and excitedly spews out all the things they're planning, and the actual release. Big improvement!

Here's what I think. It's the shareholders and Bethesda's parent company Zenimax that should be hated on. It's not a dictatorship where Todd is God or else things would be very different. There is someone else pulling the strings as always and of course their only interest is in money and profit, unlike Todd, based on his interviews and my personal take on him, who is actually passionate about video games. This is why indie games are usually some of the best/creative/unique and do things right because they're made by a small, independent group of people who love video games just as much as us because they are us! No big, reptilian guy in an armani suit telling you what to do and how to make the game based on what's going to make us more money. Anyway, at least it seems Todd still tries to be genuine as much as he is able given the circumstances so there's that.

01:38 I had the Voodoo 1, Voodoo 2 (which was super great) and a Voodoo 4 4500. Maybe there weren't enough of them on the market to produce an AAA game that depends on that performance level only, but this card was far from uncommon back then. Instead it was the real graphic card, since no other product could compete with it and the Glide standard. (Until nVidia came with the TNT later.) There were many important games using that. So "no one had one" is totally wrong. DirectX and software rendering weren't good back then, so only Glide was needed intermediate step to real progression to 3D rendering at that time. (Like Vulcan, which forces MS to improve the use of CPU power in DirectX 12.) The mistake was to rely on they specific rendering api Glide, not to Voodoo itself, since their cards could render in the common way too.
