    That’s what I thought! And also, it showed his cowardice when he so cockily asked her for a ride but fell back when she reached out to pick him up. The same thing can be seen in the wider story. He does something rash and confident when he cuts the green knight’s head off, but is reticent to accept the consequences of his actions, and flinches when he reaches the end of his journey. Gawain is constantly not thinking things through.

    @@modisuppose1321 Admittedly, it’s probably not the best way to pick up a small human. If a giant picked me up with their fingers for the first time, I’d probably flinch too, not knowing if I’ll get hurt accidentally. She should’ve offered out her hand with her palm facing up so Gawain could climb onto it. But I know that’s not the point of the scene, so I digress.

    @@lunavioleta001 agreed. That and whether it’s worth lying to gain honor rather than just telling the truth to earn it. I felt that message was read loud and clear when I saw the movie. I liked that Gaiwan wasn’t like king arthur. He wasn’t really a noble person, nor will he do the right thing majority of the time, which is often something that most in their youth would do. If anything his journey made me think of spider-man in the sense that he is way in over his head in his youth, and has greatness thrust upon him, but that doesn’t mean he’ll make the right decisions until he learns that might doesn’t make right, nor does pride. I think people misconstrue the film because they expect it to be about blockbuster action, and the general stuff that people are too often accustomed to. I love comics, superheroes, and action as much as anyone, but just because there is no action doesn’t mean there isn’t a story about taking accountability in ones actions when striving for honor and a life enriched by honor. It all depends on the kind of honor that’s earned. Either an honest one, or dishonor. I ended up buying the book since I was interested in how it was interpreted within this movie. But overall, I dug it. I just think people are going in with expectations for action instead of going in keeping in mind that this is an introspective film about being true and honest to ones self. That’s what made me enjoy the film.

    @@antdujar There are a number of things that were interesting and/or a breath of fresh air in this. Spoilers: 1. He never really was lying to himself. He always knew he wasn't worth it. When he acts tough, he knows he's just acting. 2. It wasn't love that save him. There was no magic or miracles. He didn't outsmart any one nor was he stronger either. He did nothing special. At the end, he wasn't a hero or a noble knight. But just a man who didn't run away for the first time in his life. 3. This is one of the few times where the happy ending was actually a nice surprise and wasn't cheap or corny or cringey and it actually worked. Why did it worked? Because of the tone and foreshadowing. We are lead to believe that this journey will most likely end in tragedy. It was a miserable journey without any whimsey. Most fantasy movies and super hero movies are just awful when it comes to ending. In my opinion, this ending was just better than LotR. 4. He never deserved bad things to happen to him. Sure, the Gawain from the possible future was bad, but the present one never did anything horrible. He did some good but he also did mistakes and sometimes fell in temptation, which is very human.

In the original poem, the green knight intentionally misses and only slightly cuts Gawain's neck. The whole future scene was Gawain seeing his future as coward without honor, because he used the green belt/ran away he did not face the green knight with honor.

  • @larrypotter2243

    @larrypotter2243

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@XDarkBrotherhoodHD Well in the poem, no. The green knight is revealed to be Sir Bertilak and sends Gawain back home. In this version it seems that these encounters that Gawain has are all tests that the green knight has some control over. Both in the poem and the movie they all represent a part of Gawain's internal development and i.e. embarrassment, shame, lust and him overcoming them. I personally believe Gawain lives in this version as well due to the Green Knight chuckling at the end. But really that's not the point, it doesn't matter if he lives or dies, he chose to have honor over cowardice. I would say this film's ending is more open to interpretation but it follows the poem closely enough that I don't believe they would change that. Also this is why I love film and films like this, it's just fun to discuss. Especially about a story that I read when I was kid. Also there is a bit of symbolism that struck me, when Gawain decides to go on his quest, Arthur is cleaning his face on the left with one thumb stroke. This side is captured in darkness for most of the future scenes. Then when green knight bends down to him, he cleans the right side of Gawain's face with one thumb stroke. Food for thought. This is really Symbolism: The Movie. I forgot to mention this: The Green Knight in this seems to be more of a spirit, and I don't think he was disguised as Bertilak in this.

    Great review! I love how you both can keep it fun with a film that takes itself as serious as this one. As to the giants scene, have you ever heard someone say "that dude ain't all that, he's just standing on the shoulders of giants" meaning he got there with the help of other great people, not on his own. It's literally Gawain asking giants for that sort of help and them telling him to piss off. Also, their size helps point out what a small and insignificant person Gawain is at that point. BTW: the yellow cloak he wears is a constant reminder this guy is a coward. They say it a lot in westerns when they'd call someone "yellow" or "yellow-bellied". Gawain is young and impetuous, the journey is him facing his fears and his own mistakes to become worthy of knighthood.

    Saw it Friday. Loved it, has some pacing issues (could be 20 mins shorter) really not a movie for everyone. Two old men in the theater kept yelling (yes, yelling) "I don't get it!" During the movie. You have to understand metaphors and not expect everything to be "handed to you" in exposition. This isn't for "surface thinkers". Some people will understand what I mean by that. If that comes off "aloof", 🤷‍♂️ I love popcorn blockbuster movies, but sometimes a movie that makes you think/wonder is just as fun/rewarding.

    Yeah, going into a A24 movie, you have to know that this could 100% go as you described. Although I appreciated A24's 'The Green Knight' for putting to screen the poetic tale of a young man aspiring to prove his worthiness and uphold the mantle of chivalrous knightly codes, I was in no way astonished by anything 2021's 'The Green Knight' presented in terms of script or technical film making artistry. I've just seen too many films throughout the decades to pretend as if what I watched, heard, and understood within 2021's 'The Green Knight' was somehow outstanding or "mind blowing" when considered within the history of movie making. I just can't contribute to the _hyperbole_ . 'The Green Knight' was a fine movie that put the moral of _'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight'_ to screen (testing Gawain). I appreciated the brief adventure that Gawain goes on, in ways momentarily transporting me back to moments within the likes of 1980's films like 'Legend' and 'Willow'. Still, knowing the heart of the poem which the moral component of the the movie derives from, there was nothing new there for me. I wouldn't discourage anyone curious about A24's 'The Green Knight' from wanting to see it and satiate curiousities (as I did!), but 'The Green Knight' is also _NOT a must see film that I'd tell others to rush to see in theaters_ . Just another movie...Not ground-breaking. Not indelible. Not novel...Also not at all A24's worst offering. The movie would have been fine streaming from the comfort of home.

    No problem with overly “artistic” movies, provided they are able to tell a cohesive story while moving along. When it comes to these “genre” films, A24 doesn’t do that. Be it this, the Witch or Midsommar, can feel everything quickly grind to a halt so you can “dig in” on the visuals. Until they figure out how to balance the art with a sense of momentum, maybe they should stick to dramas. After all, Uncut Gems, Eighth Grade and the Lobster were pretty good. But, they weren’t exactly genre fare.

    To me it feels a lot like a Tarsem Singh movie. The director who did "Immortals" and the show "Emerald City".

    I think the problem this movie and other slow-paced art films sometimes encounter is that they shroud a bit too much of the movie in mystery. The first and second act are perfect for keeping you in the dark, doling out little tidbits, but never enough to give away the direction things are headed. The third act here feels like it needed a bit more punch, and we just don't get that. (aside from the very end, but this feels like a bit of a letdown after such a long trek) I think specifically that the Joel Edgerton section of the story builds like it's going somewhere, but ultimately just kind of fizzles. I suppose the point of the movie is that it's a retelling, but also leaves one to ponder the point of Gawain's life choices and his outlook.

    It sucked! This was the worst movie I have seen in years. Boring, bad songs, wasted special effects, and the cast was horrible for the period. It failed on every level. The Indian dude pretending to be an English knight was the lamest knight I have ever seen. We got to see him puking on mushrooms, overtaken by three random strangers, and stupid shots where the camera went upside down. Man did this movie suck!
