Boustrophedon means “as the ox plows”, or reversing direction at the end of each row. It is still in use here in the US for tracts of land, and and probably elsewhere in the world.

There is evidence that suggests the Phoenicians got their alphabet from an older alphabet, possibly something that even predates paleo-Hebrew. Some scholars are exploring the possibility that this alphabet was first created in Northern Africa by the descendants of Abraham who migrated from the Levant to the lands in and around Egypt between 1800 and 1400BC. After all, God did tell Abraham He would make him the father of many nations. From there that first alphabet could have split into Aramaic, Paleo-Hebrew and Phoenician. It's not conclusive, but compelling nonetheless.

I thought that the most popular political system in the early polis was aristocracy

  • @historicaladventurevideos

It was a form of Aristocratic Oligarchy in the early days. It was not plain aristocracy as the rule was most of the times hereditary and it was mostly clans or families who held that rule but there were indeed some exceptions of wealthy people rising to power while challenging these clans, hence the transimission to aristocracy in later years.

@@historicaladventurevideos so, a typical path of a city-state to democracy would be: mostly aristocracy (with some wealthy people) -> tyranny -> oligarchy -> democracy ?

@@thefoolonthehill8394 Yes but there were also cities with kings or archons that would embrace democracy later down the line. Also tyranny was relevant throughout the entire history of the greek city-states, democratic or not.

@@historicaladventurevideos Fascinating. Would you consider to make a video about the factors that could have made or made not contribute in the following of a certain path to democracy (or any other system) in various city-state for exemplification?

@@thefoolonthehill8394 For sure! It's just that I'm following a chronological order in this series, so I will make this video when we reach the late 6th century.
