THE GREATEST SHOWMAN vs. Infidelity with guest Jahannah James (Part 2/2)

Фильм және анимация

Chasing dreams, damaging and repairing relationships, making amends for mistakes, and fabulous musical numbers. The Greatest Showman has some powerful themes we can learn a lot from.
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker, filmmaker Alan Seawright, and special guest Jahannah James talk about dealing with and preventing infidelity in relationships, and repairing damaged relationships and prioritizing the things that really matter in your life.
And Jahannah even gets Alan to cry AND bust out his jazz hands.

Alan never stop showing your emotions on camera. I can tell my son its okay to cry, but an example of strong man willing expressing his emotions is so very powerful. Thank you for your willingness to be vulnerable.

Agree. Also it's so important how other men react to that it may be even more important the fact that Jonathan is there for him and validates his feelings it should be done more and the fact that it doesn't encourages men to continue to not cry or be emotional under that "women are the ones that cry and are emotional"

You have to put your foot down and make things very clear. It can be hard because they are clients but still if not they will continue pushing boundaries

To me, a tight hug feels much better to discharge all of the big feelings first. Nothing is better for when you've been craving that physical connection with somebody. Imagine if we came into a kiss with all of that energy. We'd be slamming teeth into one another and that's... not cool. Kisses need tenderness.

I think the idea that cheaters were secretly evil all along and “it could never be me” is a dangerous idea. It seems a lot like abstinence education and accidental pregnancy. The best way to avoid doing something bad is to admit that you are capable of doing something bad. If it is too shameful you will never check yourself until it is too late.

  • @amberkelly3187

    @amberkelly3187

I know what you mean. It’s absolutely a choice though. You can say from the beginning “I will never cheat” and stick to that. I think he problem is people don’t think anything of pushing boundaries. If there is a moment of intimacy, whether physical or emotional before anything happens you can stop and ask what you are doing. Spend more effort with your partner, less with the other person and dial things back. But if you are unhappy in someway in your relationship and aren’t looking to your partner to help you work through it you are making a choice.

Like I tell my kids, good people make bad choices. So just because their father made a bad choice doesn't make him a bad person. He was a good husband to a certain extent, he just couldn't be honest with himself and chose to sweep problems under the rug instead of dealing with them. I don't hate not resent him but I do believe his choices led to grave consequences.

As someone who is dealing with the fallout of a therapist who didn't have those strong boundaries, and ended up crossing some really important lines, it's really good to hear Jonathan talk about the need for a therapist to be able to say, "No, I'm not comfortable with this." I'd really like to see you guys do one of the countless movies where therapists end up in relationships with their clients, and talk about the damage it could do, but I could see if that's too specific for your show.

My parents have always had their "boyfriends and girlfriends", meaning they had celebrities they were attracted to. They're open about it: "Ooh, my boyfriend's on TV!" "That's my girlfriend". We kids took it as a normal, healthy thing. But that's where it ended. Both of them have had people flirt with them and they shut it down immediately. And they have never flirted with others or put themselves in compromising positions. And this year they'll have been married 50 years.

You can see she is happy he is alive and glad he came back to her, and when he says "you're here", it really hit me and the tears flowed heavily and freely cause he didn't know she made it out. Last he heard she was still in the building and ran in to save her. He didn't know she had made it out before that. For all he knew, she was in there when the building collapsed. So when he saw her sitting over him, he sees that she is alive and.....he is just happy and relieved. That realization just broke me. I still burst out in tears every time I see it. and the first time when you see all the people in the Hospital looking at them in shock and judgment, I said out loud through tears "Oh Fuck all of you" lol so don't worry Johanna, I am in tears right there with you

This film first hit me as an 'ex actress'...i was the one chasing their cheers..when i became a mom, and a mother of children with disabilities i lost my 'worth'..my post natal illness lead to bipolar and i lost my job, we became full time carers and i felt i had no 'legacy', no profession..watching this film, from now on and the last shot of him watching his kids and singing 'its everything you ever want..' really landed with me. Just before christmas, i discovered my husband had had an emotional affair with an old school friend he'd reconnected with online..he was in a bad place mentally, hadnt had the years of therapy id had or the mental health support and it started as he felt he couldnt keep 'off loading' on me...i knew in my gut something was going on and after months of denial she called him at midnight one night so, eventually, he admitted. He went to therapy, we had couples therapy and we started to look at our relationship a new. It was the wake up call we needed, parent caring is hard, and comes with many issues which you must confront within you. We are a strong couple, very strong, but in our deepest moment of despair..it still happened to us, we lost sight of 'who all this is for'.

Then we patiently teach them how to cope with and handle those feelings, no matter how confusing or intense. At the same time, we also teach them that its important to think before you act on what you feel, and consider how those actions will affect not only themselves, but others as well. We feel that true emotional maturity is understanding how to find the right balance between self love, self awareness, empathy, and compassion... no matter how difficult the circumstances you find yourself in.

My favorite part of this whole movie is when PT finds the bearded lady and looks her in the eyes and says she's beautiful. He doesn't look at her beard, her breasts, or give her the "up-down." And her face just screams "you're the first person who has said that to me." but also, emotional cheating is cheating and I love how they were able to get back together and forgive when he realized that another woman could not give him what he needed.

I actually felt like PT was all talk in that department. He told the bearded lady with a gorgeous voice that she was beautiful, but it was the unbearded woman that he sent on worldwide tours to sing to adoring audiences while his bearded singer was kept in the circus to be gawked at. The way I interpreted it, he saw "freaks" as beautiful because he could make money off of them. Sure, he treated them better than most other people did, but he also never attempted to improve their lot in life or humanize them to the rest of the world because he needed them to stay freaks to make money for him.

This episode helped me realize a lot of things. My ex-boyfriend was talking to another girl while we were still in a relationship (We'd been together for more than 6 months) and we broke up because I got so upset about it, but the way he reacted made me wonder if it wasn't actually that big of a deal just because he had never actually *done* anything with her. And for a while I've been wrestling with whether or not I was too harsh or if I was just being paranoid and whatever, but I've been thinking ever since this video came out just a couple hours ago and it's really put things into perspective for me. Emotional cheating is still cheating, and even if you never actually did anything it still hurts just as much.

I think that it's so important that Hugh Jackman was the lead in this because he is someone that most people can agree is very successful and famous and respected, but the fact that he plays a character that strived for that but didn't find happiness until he focused on family and relationships is so important. There will always be people who say that "they're rich and famous, they'll never understand" but the point is that they ARE and that's exactly why they understand.

Not only for the dynamic between the mother and daughter (Which I identify with also as an overachieving student with parents who have high expectations), but also the character of the Prince and how you forget yourself as you age. I think the film lends itself to a lot of great topics you've covered on the show with things like isolation, friendship, familial love, and self love. Also bonus crying points because this film's third act always has me sobbing so I'd love to see Alan's reactions.

@@misspriss2482 I'll have to disagree and agree at the same time: I don't think Ross cheated, because, as we all know, they were ON A BREAK, and as you mentioned, they didn't agree anything about being exclusive during that break. However, if it were my situation, I would be hella mad and hurt at the same time if my partner/ex-partner went to sleep with another woman HOURS after we broke up/started to be on a break, and then decided he does want me after all. In that sense, what Ross did was wrong, not just because he hurt Rachel, but also because it wasn't healthy at all. He still loved Rachel, he hadn't got over her yet, and he only had sex with a basically strange woman because he misstrusted Rachel and thought she was doing the same thing with Mark, it was all out of resentment. See? Ross got mad at her too because of the very same thing Rachel got mad at him, it's just Rachel didn't do it. Now, what Rachel did wrong here, was calling him a cheater OVER AND OVER, because he didn't technically cheat; she might've felt cheated on because she was hurt, but he technically didn't.

So I got my medical degree, got married and came to live in the UK. So many friends from medical school asked me why I did it...how could I leave everything and get married after studying for 6 years so much....I always say, even though I love being a doctor, my everything is my family...and my husband is my family. It was very hard, and being a doctor in Europe coming from south America is not that easy, I am still trying now...but I never ever regret it. I wouldn't change this many years of being married and growing up together for anything. "The ability to do this insane physical stuff while singing and emoting" listen as someone who did theater and musicals in high-school, it is so hard 😅 I will never forget performing Step In Time from Mary Poppins. Not only is it a complicated song musically (I think its the hardest song on the whole show. The key changes, man) but physically we were all over the stage, running around, jumping, tap dancing, all while remembering the arm movements for the chimney brushes. And it's a very very high energy song. The whole song basically portrays the chimney sweeps as angels watching over the kids so we had to be up beat and excited and passionate. We had to be theses wondrous beings to dazzle the kids. I was always so out of breath by the end of it (and the reprise that immediately followed) but it was SO much fun. You really just get into this head space with it where your body just does it. No thinking, no analyzing what you're doing. The muscle memory just takes over. It really is, as yall said, "being taken over by the holy spirit" in a sense. It is so difficult but man when you get it right...i don't think anything can top that feeling

The soul video hit me hard, too! I'm an INFP so it really impacted me hard. Lemme share a quote, one of my biggest fears in a few sentences: "This is when the fear starts to nag. Not just the self-doubt (oh, the self-doubt!), but the “what if” kind of fear. What if I never do it? What if I never make a difference? What if I waste my WHOLE life, and when I get to the end, I realize - I won’t say it, INFPs. You know the fear." Yeah it's from a pretty dramatic article on every Myer's Briggs fears, but every time I read that it makes me cry because it's a genuine fear I have. The soul video helped me process that, and for once I actually cried with Alan. I'm glad to have been vulnerable with him, and I'm glad he's comfortable enough to be emotionally vulnerable for this. Sorry for barfing out words here, I just related and wanted to share that lol

Not broken his nose. He had another tumor removed. Basal Cell Carcinoma. He's had I forget how many removed now, from all the years spent in the sun. It was removed the day before he flew to New York for the greenlight meeting, and the director told him not to tell anyone. So on the day, Hugh acted and read through the whole movie while another Broadway male star ( forgive me I can't remember his name ) sang for him. But on the final song, Hugh couldn't stay quiet. He belted it out for all he was worth, ripped open his stitches and had to immediately go back to his surgeon to have them repaired. They didn't stop filming, but in the Behind the Scenes, you can see him touch the bandages on his nose a couple of times because he was aware that it was bleeding and was concerned everyone would freak out if they saw.

His starlet KISSED HIM. He didn’t kiss her, didn’t choose it. It was a calculated move to ruin him after he decided he wanted to go back to his wife because he knows he actually loves her. And his wife accepting that after the initial despair of feeling she’s losing her husband is so sweet. Especially because as the viewer we know he’s not intentionally trying to be unfaithful. He is constantly denying advances but he doesn’t quite realize he’s crossing a line. Sorry this is a tangent I’ve just had a lot of thoughts on this.
