I agree, laughter is about surprise (most of the time). But to really understand it, we must ask ourselves why we do it. I mean, when you think about it, it's a weird phenomenon that we all suddenly start saying "ahaha" in certain situations. And it's not some social phenomenon, we always did it. The most plausible explanation is that it comes from monkeys actually, who scream "hi hi hi" when they're happy. It's an old instinct we kept from them and became laughter through evolution, which I find kinda funny in itself. 😁
Ironically Norm McDonald was on Family Guy, the antithesis of unfunny. Good comedy is hard to do; though I would compare it to a surprise party. It comes out of no were and is a bit confusing at first, but after the initial shock, there's a sense of relief and joy that comes after. Also the robot is a parody of 2001: A Space Odyssey (which was parodied in WALL-E).
