Most of the time what people believe is “realistic” isn’t, it is just close enough to be believable, but has purposeful changes within it just to make it more appealing. Murata is very much leaning on naturalism, and his studies are very impressive, but in one of the pictures in this video you’ll see him with Kim jung gi, one of the most respected artists who is not known for making photographic copies, but rather fluent compositions and grand three dimensional scenes on the spot. It is much more impressive to master that, and create scenes with angles which would be difficult to replicate with a camera.

Hyperrealism is really not the pinnacle of artistry and I cannot stress this enough. There’s so much more thought that he put into those incredible shots from his manga in terms of composition, line weight, value and style and what it all does for the exact point he wants to get across or the exact experience he wants to elicit of the viewer. That étude looks good, but it’s nowhere near as breathtaking as his other works and works of so many other manga artists

Its not his character lol ONE makes One Punch Man (and Mob Psycho 100) and created One Punch Man originally as a webcomic. It later got adapted into a full manga with a different artist and a lightly changed story. Mob Psycho is not the same case though, as that started as a manga drawn by ONE and still is. So if you want to see how ONEs art has improved (which is just as impressive, improvement wise I think), look at his art from the first panels of One Punch Mans webcomic vs his most recent manga, Mob Psycho 100: Reigen

But most of the Hyperrealists use grids and tracing(nothing inherently wrong With them But imo they Should be use as a tool rather than a crutch). Which disables them from learning actual fundamentals, developing their Art style, draw from imagination/memory.

That's because most painters are only focused on their visual only, meanwhile manga/comic/visual novel artists focused on both visual & story. And Murata proved that point. I mean they need to be good at visual too and any detail would make them great (One Punch Man, Berserk, Vagabond, etc), but you can't be too detailed to the level of a painter (hyper realistic) because you need to work another panels, not only a canvas/paper.

The way he plays with lighting was always amazing and he seems to enjoy drawing intricate lighting details for psychic characters and those with intense auras. When drawing, I kind of go into auto pilot and follow basic concepts and call it a day. Anyone who doesn’t draw much doesn’t really see the flaws. But Murata goes above that. I’ve noticed he repeatedly draws “bended light” more intricately and it’s always beautiful.
