The Great Jessye Norman (Strauss Im Abendrot -- VIDEO)
Музыка
Richard Strauss (1864-1949)
From Vier Letzte Lieder (Four Last Songs):
Im Abendrot (At Sunset)
Jessye Norman (1945-2019), soprano
Orchestre de la Suisse romande conducted by Wolfgang Sawallisch
Recorded in 1979
Text (Joseph von Eichendorff):
We have through sorrow and joy
gone hand in hand;
From our wanderings, let's now rest
in this quiet land.
Around us, the valleys bow
as the sun goes down.
Two larks soar upwards
dreamily into the light air.
Come close, and let them fly.
Soon it will be time for sleep.
Let's not lose our way
in this solitude.
O vast, tranquil peace,
so deep in the evening's glow!
How weary we are of wandering---
Is this perhaps death?
Wir sind durch Not und Freude
gegangen Hand in Hand;
vom Wandern ruhen wir
nun überm stillen Land.
Rings sich die Täler neigen,
es dunkelt schon die Luft.
Zwei Lerchen nur noch steigen
nachträumend in den Duft.
Tritt her und laß sie schwirren,
bald ist es Schlafenszeit.
Daß wir uns nicht verirren
in dieser Einsamkeit.
O weiter, stiller Friede!
So tief im Abendrot.
Wie sind wir wandermüde--
Ist dies etwa der Tod?

When I heard this for the first time i was driving my car and had to stop, else I would have crashed. Never before in my life I cried so hard
Nun ist Jessy Norman ihren Weg im Abendrot zu Ende gegangen. RIP. - Heinz

I played violin as a kid and had a teacher who had me listen to this when I was 14. It showed me the essence of the romantic period and forever changed the way I felt about music’s ability to impact emotion...voice especially. I loved her music and had to come here for a listen as well. So powerful!

One of the most beautiful voices ever, singing one of the most beautiful songs ever. It touches our feelings that take us over when we lose a loved one, but instead of sinking into the earth, it ascends into a glorious sunset as a metaphor for the end of a life.

WildStrawberryFilms yes indeed a perfect match and exquisitely painful in it’s beauty one of my very favourite pairings. I think it connects us all through its power to transcend individuality.
The tenderness in which she sings this is unsurpassed..... Last Verse English Translation: "Could I complain? Could I be apprehensive? Could I lose faith in you and in myself? No, I already bear your heaven here within my heart. And this heart, before it breaks, still drinks in the fire and savours the light."

Beautiful!
I truly believe that Mrs. Jessye Norman had the single most beautiful voice to have ever graced this Earth. God gave her a gift, and it was the voice of an angel. The high note simultaneously sends a chill down my spine and floods my mind with emotion. That note quite literally pulls the tears out of my eyes. Not to mention the song itself. If you know the words, meaning, and history, it’s so incredibly touching. What a love song. This is what I want played at my funeral, specifically a recording of Mrs. Norman. I’ll put it in my will if I have to.

One of the greatest artists of any century and a great noble woman whose loss bring me to tears still.

Wow. 😮👏👏👏👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌😃Thank you for sharing this magnificent piece with us! I grew up hearing this very same voice, and music. Once I learned of jessye Norman, and this piece of music I've been so happy. This piece was featured on the opening credits of the 1991 film "Wild At Heart ". Staring Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern. A film I've enjoyed watching on and off for a long time. ~Cheers! ✌💗💯
Absolutely wonderful! Jessye's rapt interpretation and vocal control are miraculous - intensely moving. For me, her 1982 recording of the 'Four Last Songs' with Masur and the Leipzig Gewandhaus is one of the great artistic achievements of the last century. I played this wonderful song when my mother died. I was conceived in 1948, born in 1949. This is the last song the maesto wrote in '48. Last words - How tired of wandering are we...or...is this perhaps death.

Actually this recording is very poor, mono sound in 1979?? However, yes the acoustics in the Victoria Hall are actually marvellous and for this reason Decca chose the venue for many of their finest recordings during the golden age of the Suisse Romande Orchestra and Ernest Ansermet.
RIP.
The most glorious singer of all time. She makes me want to cry she is so incredible.
So glorious!
