The Last Kingdom is actually how I found this channel and have now watched every upload. I wanted to know more and now gone on a deep dive into American history, World War 1 and World War 2, and the Napoleon Wars thanks to your reaction videos.

I've read three of the books "The Last Kingdom" is based on. They're excellent. The author, Bernard Cornwall, gives so much detail about events and places, it's really fascinating. If you like the series, check out the books.

I read the first one and was very disappointed. The way they were written was just terrible. Conn Iggulden on the other hand is superb if you’re interested in the wars of the roses

@@johnwhittaker311 I read the whole series and the first book is the weakest one. There're works of historical fiction that take the history as a given and build their story around the actual history without distorting it (or at least try to not distort it). And there're works of historical fiction that just pick and choose historical events and characters to their liking and just include them within their own story. The Last Kingdom belongs to the former and the Vikings to the latter. Another of my favorite historical fiction series is Adrian Goldsworthy's Vindolanda series.

Yes! Last Kingdom is SO good. I genuinely do not watch TV or movies, i work too much. But I find time to watch the Last Kingdom. Didn’t know they were going to wrap that up with a movie either, but now i’m stoked for that! Thanks for sharing.

Love The Last Kingdom, and it’s what sparked my interest in the early history of England. I had heard of Alfred the Great but never knew much about him or his family.

The Last Kingdom is amazing, it really started my interest in english history and made me love it, and has completely changed the way I look at my own country and own city. edit: also just finished watching and seems like your fathers line live in the same town as me lol!

@@idiotengineer3925 I've been pushing The Last Kingdom since the first season came out and it has not gotten the recognition it deserves. It seems to finally be getting some love because it's been in the Netflix top 10 since the fifth season came out. It's at least getting some some support as the show wraps up and before the movie comes out. I think it will be one of those shows that becomes a cult classic after it ends though.

@@thefilmeffect6089 I definitely agree, it will become a cult classic. I am very picky about shows and have a poor attention span but I love the Last Kingdom. Sets the scene better than any show in that era & has awesome music and is set in a fascinating time. I felt the same way about the Sopranos & The Wire when I watched them for the first time.

I've loved the recent seasons of Last Kingdom, but I was still so sad when Alfred had to exit the series. There are two particular moments with Alfred that I love so much, pretty much the only two moments in Season 1 where he actually smiles, and both involve Father Beocca making an incredibly sarcastic remark to someone else in Alfred's presence, and Alfred's face goes from "Grump Cat" to this very slight smile. I don't know why that always hits me so powerfully, but I feel like it's such a perfect representation of the character, where it's really just wit in others that puts a smile on his face that is otherwise weighed down by the heaviest of concerns.

You should give Netflixs Babarians a shot. Great series get many things rigth about History, that beeing said it is not 100% Historical accurate. But which History Movie/Series is?

Just finished watching The Last Kingdom series again. What a great story, an example of a great achievement gained over generations.

I am one of those (apparently) few ladies that watch your videos. This is one of my favorite periods to study! The few women that are recorded in this period are so interesting to learn about. The period leading up to and just after the Norman conquest is full of fascinating stuff.

You mentioned the last kingdom in one of your videos when I just discovered you and started binging your videos. I then started binging the last kingdom cause you got me wanting to learn more history. So I love this video

Just when I didn't think I could like you and this channel more, learning about history and hearing your views and opinions you go and do this one about the last kingdom. Youre awesome.

The Last Kingdom is a truly spectacular show, and the books are great as well. The show is one of the most underrated and hidden gems Netflix has.

I enjoy all of your content but I'm so happy you're covering this period. Its probably been my favorite since I was just a little guy. So much of it had far reaching effects that lasts right up to today

Ive seen both shows and they both have their pros and cons.. really nice to see two shows showing the same period of time from opposite POVs.

Just stumbled across your channel and I'm really impressed by your knowledge and passion. Great video and I want to see more so you've got another subscriber today. You can still see the remnants of the Danelaw and the Saxon kingdoms in the British landscape today in the names of the towns and rivers etc. North of England and Scotland have many place names with Nordic origins (also Pictish etc) while Southern England have names originating from old Anglo-Saxon. It's a really interesting subject to get into.

Nice to see you covering this, I started reading the books years before the show came out and fell in love with them. The show is really good to and I was pleasantly surprised when it got so popular. I’m not caught up in the show or the books (although I know I’m still ahead in the story than the show) but would definitely recommend either or to people. Obviously the show is easier to consume but I think the books are definitely better, there’s certain elements and minor characters left out from the books, and certain scenes that were done differently and better in my opinion. Either way so happy that this show and the Saxon stories got popular and people can enjoy the tale of Uhtred, which used to feel like my own niche story that not many people knew of.

York still has walls and in the city centre is decorated as a viking city, there's a stone wall infront of the train station, and plenty of museums about the viking rule, when you come to England i highly recommended york

Haven't seen Vikings but the The Last Kingdom is one of my favorites! Really cool to see familiar names in history and how the books/show were based on real events.

I’ve read the series all the way through 3 times and while the show is phenomenal, the series by Bernard Cornwell is top tier. Hands down my favorite fictional reading

The Last Kingdom series is good entertainment, but the book series by Bernard Cornwell on which the show is based is much better. I wish the show followed the books more closely when it comes to detail rather than focusing so heavily on the drama and the "villain of the season," but the wishes of a Viking Age reenactor are never going to win out over the quest for mainstream audience ratings success. Great to see you delve into the history of my favorite time period. Skål!

I completely agree with your opening monologue. Historical fiction has a place and has created a lot of great things. Sharpe as far as costumes, command and social structure, and even some tactics, could nearly be a Napoleonic reference work. Vikings uses almost everything that we know from history but that isn’t much. Sherlock Holmes even as a book, literally shapes our view of Victorian life and culture.

G. R. R. Martins based the history of Westeros on the history of england. At 5:14, it's mentioned 7 kingdoms emerged after the Anglo-saxons invaded the British isle. Same happened after Andals invaded Westeros, seven kingdoms emerged.

Enjoyable video and your enhancement as usual. I've been doing some Ancestry with my mom who is half English and half Hungarian/Germanic. Last night I was showing her maps of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in late 1800s when her Grandfather was born. Next time I'll walk her through this content and explain her Scandinavian British DNA. The Angles and Jutes originated in Denmark, as did the Vikings. And while the Normans invaded from France, they also descended from Danes. So in the end, it's basically three different groups of Danes fighting for control of England.

Notbsure if you play the Assassin's Creed series, ut I loved that the latest one follows a huge migration of norse-men to England as they try to fight the Saxons for land. I always love the time periods they choose to portray through Assassin's Creed. Couldn't pick my favorite of the series, because I'm such a history nerd, and Assassin's Creed does a lot to scratch that history nerd itch

Also, the dude who wrote the last kingdom books also wrote Sharpe (the one starring Sean Bean back in the early 90s) . His schtick is to create a fictional story set in around real life historical events. Love that mix

I love both to death. Personally, I think the last kingdom has better cinematography and has basically no bad seasons. Vikings was peak television for some seasons and not so much for others. They both got me interested in viking history

I don't think Vikings and The Last Kingdom are comparable. They have very different styles and focus on very different things. They just happen to overlap in time period and some locations.

Someone who reacts to knights and generals? Amazing.

An interesting thing about the viking age is that the kingdom of bernicia (northern northumbria) was cut off from the rest of the anglo saxon world by the danelaw until the unification of england by athelstan , probably because of the terrain. A battle worth reading about from this part of the world is the battle of winwaed

Another Last Kingdom fan! I didnt know season 5 was out! The first 3 seasons had me hooked, such q great show. Destiny is all!

This is probably the best redeeming part of AC Valhalla is the breakdown of old England and the Viking Age.

Hey great video, on your earlier video about the great generals in history you wanted to learn more about early Islamic history, Historymarche is a KZread channel who made a video about the battle of badr, one of the most consequential battles in the history of Islam. He gives more in partisan view of that time period and battle. Also the kings and generals channel has a documentary series on early Islamic expansions too. They also give a good view on the battles based on facts

My mom visited the Viking ruins in northwest Newfoundland. I think it's L'anse De Meadows or something like that. I love all your vids but lately I've been into the battlefield and historic site vids. With the warmer weather coming I've been planning my trips. I've taken a 2 year travelling hiatus and it's time to get back on the road. Today I visited Kingston and Gananoque Ontario. Both towns were involved in the war of 1812. Kingston is a scenic hot spot for history buffs, and although much smaller, Gananoque has a unique history of its own. Kingston was home to the British Naval base on Lake Ontario during the war of 1812. Commander James Yeo led the British against Isaac Chauncey stationed in Sacket's Harbour for naval supremacy on the Great Lakes. (Prob Lake Champlain as well) 1 soldier from Newfoundland firing from a shore battery was killed at Kingston in November 1812 during the Battle of Kingston Harbour. (This was the aftermath of the chase and escape of the Royal George) 2 Americans were killed and I think 1 was an officer. The first was reported to have been cut in half by a 9 pound shore gun. The officer was badly wounded when a cannon on board exploded, injuring several others. Later with the winds against his favor, Chauncey ordered a retreat and the dazed officer was struck by a boom and knocked overboard and drowned. The raid on Gananoque commanded by Benjamin Forsythe in September proved to be successful. I think 9 members of the Canadian Leeds Militia were killed in action, and the Americans were able to steal provisions, destroy most of the small settlement (an important supply depot between Kingston and Montreal) and demolish blockhouses and a bridge. Militia leader and Gananoque founder Colonel Joel Stone was absent during the skirmish involving 200 Americans and about 100 from the Leeds local militia. His wife was wounded in the hip by a musket while hiding valuables in their home. The Americans suffered 1 killed and about 8 wounded. I would love to see a sacket's harbour video. You are only a few hours away from NE Ohio. Any war of 1812 content would be much appreciated. I'm visiting the Niagra peninsula soon, also not far from where you are.

The area of England becomes known as the Dane Law as the Danes taxes the inhabitants quite a lot for protection against other enemies. The only rule or regulation the Danes come with is this taxation of everything, and they bring no benefit. The Danish king, Cnut the Great is even buried in Winchester Cathedral in 1035. The term Dane Law only came to being in the 1900's and has no meaning outside of the British/English Speaking world to describe the area and time period of the Danish Empire's occupation of part of England.

More of a vikings guy my self, I'll try The Last Kingdom out!

The first time I ever heard of the Vikings invading England was after watching the History Channel series Vikings. In school we learned about their raids on the European mainland but I don't ever recall the English raids being taught. Which is odd because the Vikings had a huge impact on English tradition and history.

It's kinda weird to see the viking era portraid from the English perspective, as I grew up with the Norwegian one. I have always said that the era is my favorite(probably because I am from a town that was founded by Holy Olav in 1016, or because my grandfather allowed my to come with him to "Viking-camps" from a young age), and seeing it from the oppressed objective. As is probably understandable, we focused more on the discoveries and every day life than specific battles fought on English mainland, which doesn't mean that we didn't talk about the looting, raping and burning so much in detail, but not as much as this is curriculum in 6th grade(at latest). We have a show from here, that is a comedy about life in the viking age. It is NOT historically accurate, comedy shows rarely are, but it almost accurately portrays how the Norsemen lived when they didn't sail as merchants or vikings. I think its called "The Norsemen" and was dubbed(kinda badly) to English after filming the original Norwegian so it's available outside of here on Netflix.

I live in Norwich, absolutely adore Norfolk as a whole but it would be as easy to invade today as it was back then! 😅

As usual, great stuff 🙂 I loved The Last Kingdom, so I didn't learn a lot in this episode. However, didn't know that Hiberians and Picts did invade Wales and England around the same time as Angles and Saxons. A question I have, and they don't explain in The Last Kingdom: who were the Brittons and how do they vanished (did they?) from their lands?

The traditional story is that the Britons were pushed to the western extremes of Britain. Wales,Cornwall etc. I don't believe it was a wholesale population displacement by the angles,saxons and jutes on the natives but it was certainly significant. Interestingly Welsh means 'foreigner' or 'slave' in old English. In my honest opinion the Welsh, especially in the more isolated northern parts look distinct from the English in the East. Tending to be darker hair and more swarthy in general. Also the Irish are paler and darker haird in general, also Britain is an interesting place, a mix match of different invaders.

Im not a big tv/series watcher, but my interest in this period was definitly poked by Asssassins Creed Valhalla

@2.45 edit: They didn't "end up" in Denmark. Many of them came from Denmark as a place of origin.

They also raided the moors and the moors were one of only a few nations that organized defenses specifically to thwart viking raiders

The cool thing about "The Last Kingdom" for me being Faroese is that a Faroese person was involved in the music of the series; that being Faroese singer Eivør Pálsdóttir. In season 5, she even had a cameo, although there her character was (sadly) Icelandic, not Faroese. (or from what I've been told I haven't seen the entire series yet).

My most favorite period of history. Battles of Religious Ideology such as Celtic, Catholic, Norse. Battles of Culture Ideology such as Irish, Welsh, Pictish, Anglo-Saxon, Breton, Norse. Battles of Social Ideology such social inclusion, social exclusion (Alfred for example was very much for including the Norse/Danes, many of his Alderman and neighbours were not...especially the Mercians who wanted to push the Danes into the sea and let them swim home.) And from the ashes of it all resulted in one of the most multicultural and socially acceptant Nations of the world at the time, which set the young nation of England on a path to "supercharged growth"....until the Church got overly involved (like it always does) and ultimately led to deep divisions with neighbors (and internally further down the road). I could go on all day about all the large stepping stones this period laid out that would alter the future of not only the British Isles, but Western Europe as a whole, going all the way to the 15/1600's. Probably the most formative period in Western European History possibly even more so than the Frankish Empire.

Well talk about a coincidence I just finished a book called Anglo Saxon kingdoms and only yesterday visited Tamworth Castle to see parts of the Anglo Saxon gold from the Staffordshire horde.

It's crazy the the Romans of Londinium were an independent city, unconquered after the other Romans left and even in this time was still the same to even today. What we know as London is Westminister growing up around Londinium. CGP Grey does a great video on it.

Haven't seen The last kingdom but have seen Vikings and it's spin-off. Vikings & their history is always a great story.

You would enjoy Micheal Woods, series The Story of England. Done by the BBC, well researched. It creates more questions than it answers. Raises questions on the impact of various waves of invasions, by use of DNA on inhabitants in a Village in Leicestershire, called Kibworth, where the records go back to troubled times.

A fun little fact. The word Viking is ofcourse a name for a proffession but in modern day Icelandic the word viking is often used when describing someone from a place called (Something)vík. For example Vík í Mýrdal, if you are from there then you're a Mýrdalsvíkingur, a better example is Reykjavík, if you are from Reykjavík you're a Reykvíkingur (some people say Reykjavíkingur) then there are places like Ólafsvík, Ólaf(s)víkingur and so on. Vík meaning bay.

There have been proposals that the term "Viking" stems from young farmless men moving away from an overpopulated "Viken" ("østlandet" in modern terms), - which is where Harald Fairhair came from, and the reason why he was able to overthrow western jarls and petty kings. Basically; "Going Viking" was a term coined by the fact that young men from "Viken" started terrorizing random shores while on the lookout for farms, ladies and treasure. Similar modern terms could be "lone wolf", "yuppie", "playboy" or "gangster". Overpopulation, or a lack of jobs, is the main driver for creating hordes of angry men.

There are artifacts in Viking graves from the Byzantine Empire, some became part of the army that fought the Persians.

Its funny that Æthelred decided to have a 1 hour prayer service while his brother is out fighting possibly could have lost his life. I just wonder what the conversation was like after they went home?

Off topic, I was reading this alternate story about Edward 6th living-Not only did the tudor dynasty lived pass 1603 but eventually we got A Henry I of Europe.

You should read the books based on The Last Kingdom. They are a great read and more historically accurate. Nonetheless, I love both the books and the show.

You should also react to Knowlegia's Roman Empire history (Just a suggestion) and Pls complete Epic History TV's Napoleonic Wars series.

One thing that's always struck me about this time period in British history. A Christian Britain (seems anachronistic to use the term "England" here), is invaded by Germanic pagan warriors coming across the sea from the east...while these invaded people, only a couple of centuries before, had themselves been the Germanic pagan warriors invading a Christian Britain across the sea from the east. One wonders if any Anglo-Saxons (perhaps a few monks at least?) recognized the irony.

I always liked Braveheart and The Patriot, some purists snub them, but I find the general plot enjoyable and it increases interest in the time period. For the Patriot though I warn people that while it doesn't ignore slavery, it does downplay it.

You should check out “Vinland Saga.” It’s an anime that is extremely well made and I believe it’s talking about this era of history. I’m not sure if it’s entirely accurate or not tho. 😅😬

After binge watching 6 season of Vikings I tried right after to get into The Last Kingdom... couldn't do it. Probably was too soon and the difference in production kinda turned me off. Now that I gave it some time I'll see about watching it again! But I definitely had an appreciation for Viking culture after. Looked up a lot of Nordic music on KZread. It's incredible!

Definitely give The Last Kingdom another shot man. I personally quit watching Vikings during the fifth season. I tried to get into it again before the sixth season came out and just didn't like it. The Last Kingdom really filled that void for me. It gets much better as the seasons go on and it's portrayal of Alfred the great is just fantastic. Season 3 is probably the best of the series.

Being Norwegian, i love the viking age, so this just made my day!

Bjorn Ironside was part of the Great Heathen Army also but didn't say nothing about him which he was Ivar and Ubba brother and one of the most famous Vikings

If you haven't watched them you have to watch Hornblower and Sharpe both just a lot of fun fiction based around the napoleonic wars (UK show not sure you guys got it in the states?)
