CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Hilts (Steve McQueen) eludes the Germans on motorcycle, but is captured when he gets ensnared on a barbed wire fence.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The Great Escape is based on the true story of a group of Allied prisoners of war who managed to escape from an allegedly impenetrable Nazi prison camp during World War II. At the beginning of the film, the Nazis gather all their most devious and troublesome POWs and place them at a new prison camp, which was designed to be impervious to escapes. Immediately, the prisoners develop a scheme where they will leave the camp by building three separate escape tunnels. Richard Attenborough is the British soldier who masterminds the whole plan, and who commands his motley squad--featuring Charles Bronson as a Polish trench-digging expert, James Garner as an American with a talent for theft, Donald Pleasence as a masterful forger, and Steve McQueen as an American rebel--through the construction of the tunnels and, eventually, their escape. An epic adventure film, The Great Escape runs nearly three hours, featuring a rousing Elmer Bernstein score and exciting action sequences -- including a notorious motorcycle chase between McQueen and the Nazis -- the likes of which had never been seen before in Hollywood productions.

The 'patting the bike' bit was acknowledged in the 1997 Ford Puma t.v. ad. which features a C.G.I. McQueen edited into the action: at the end he pats a Ford Puma while looking at his "Great Escape" motorbike.

Yeah maybe they were both petrol heads. But the similarity ended there. Newman was a great actor and a first class human being. A decent loyal husband and father who raised hundreds of millions for charity through his foundations. McQueen was a decent actor and a prize turd as a person. A complete arsehole by comparison.

Although Steve McQueen did his own motorcycle riding, there was one stunt he did not perform: the hair-raising 60-foot jump over a fence. This was done by McQueen's friend Bud Ekins, who was managing a Los Angeles-area motorcycle shop when recruited for the stunt. It was the beginning of a new career for Ekins, as he later doubled for McQueen in Bullitt (1968) and did much of the motorcycle riding on the television series CHiPs (1977).

The jump over the border wall was filmed in Germany just west of the town of füssen. But that is near the border of Austria which was Part of Germany during the second world war. The closest German land border with Switzerland to füssen is the area west of könstanz Germany, Which is the area between Germany and Switzerland. If captain Hilts was a real person trying to escape Germany on a motorcycle, he would have had to go to the area west of könstanz Germany to try to escape.

Interestingly that was one of the reasons the actual escape happened (from what I remembered seeing on a doco). All that manpower that would otherwise be killing allied forces being used to look for escapees.
