The Great Eastern crisis [1875-1878]

The Great Eastern crisis of 1875-78 began in Ottoman territories of the Balkans in 1875, with the outbreak of several uprisings and wars that resulted in the meddling of international powers, and was ended with the Treaty of Berlin in July 1878.

cwomanmd Incorrect. Cyprus was rented for 50 years to Britain, so they would back the Ottoman Empire during the Congress of Berlin. Britain occupied Cyprus in 1914 and never gave it back.

Major mistake in the end - Principality of Bulgaria was vassal of the Ottoman Empire after the "Treaty of Berlin"! Otherwise it's a good video. I know it's a large amount of work and it's your hobby, i suppose, so for not professional work, it's 6-7/10 :D

Great video! I love how the smaller uprisings and territorial claims are presented and not wish-washed. Although for some clarification, I also find the alignment of Bulgaria and colorization a bit disappointing. Easter Rumelia was one of the first nations to go under international occupation - paving the way for mandates as a precedent in international law. Also on the account of Balkan people: Romania did contribute a lot as they joined arms with the Russians, especially at Plevna, one of the key battles of this time. But to say they weren't a vassal state (even if they had their own institutions) is quite delusional, just by taking a look at the events of the Greek Independence war it's quite clear how they suffered and were in a sub position. We also have to mention that they were more independent in this moment of history as any other. The British and Austro-Hungarians were supplying weapons to some Romanian troops in case they wanted to defy Russian allies. But it never happened thanks to the Berlin Congress. The Bulgarians had valiant efforts but - not taking away the heroic deeds - those are minor episodes and were heavily supported by the Russian military circles. At some point the Russian diplomats were frustrated how Bulgarian soldiers are unmotivated and just want to go back in time to do the summer harvest. So it is quite understandable that the whole venture was seen as somewhat a Russian initiative as Ignatiev and mostly Gorchakov worked decades to break the Paris treaty of 1856. As some mentioned the Croat, Montenegrin, Bosnian deeds - I can hardly argue for or against these claims but we have to take into account that the national lines between these populations identities weren't as clear as after in the "modern", "nationalized" world or even around 1912. Also for the account on whom attacked first and who betrayed whom first is totally meaningless and ahistorical at this war, as it happened decades before the Balkan wars.

Only one Serb and it wasn't betrayal since Serbia as a kingdom had nothing to do with it. They had just went through 2 Balkan wars and had no reason to declare war to one of the strongest empires in Europe. The truth is whether Gavrilo killed Archduke or not, Austrians would declare war on Serbia who had started to gain power in the Balkan. Austria was always shady country, doing good thing when it suits them and never missing a chance to fuck their neighboring countries over.

And other of the Moldavia-Wallachia between 1821 and 1878, with the union of 1859 under Alexandu Ioan Cuza which was formally recognize by the powers in 1862. Thanks, very good animations.

Я знам как оратите, оти и отът границу збруемо исто. Not only these cities, all villages in West Morava valley (or Bulgarian Morava as we call it) are with Bulgarian origin. However, after losing two world wars fighting for thе cause of reuniting thеsе lands and after taking up the communist one, which is opposite to the nationalist, we as a society are totally ignorant and don't give a shit about our brothers across the border. In the modern world you can define yourself as you want because it is a personal matter, further more you are born as Serbian national and you are going to die as such. However, it is really good to know your origin and where your roots lay.

Tsardom of Russia means Царство Русское (1547 - 1721), not the Russian Empire (1721 - 1917). Here the Serbian language keeps the original meaning of the word Царство/ Carstvo: "empire" (any empire) while in Russian, and from there in modern Bulgarian, the meaning has undergone inflation, meaning "orthodox kingdom" while any empire is "империя" pozdrav iz Bugarske

Some important corections: 1) Romania was a vasal state, not part of Otoman Empire like Bulgaria ; 2) Romania not just granted Russia to move troops around it's territory but actually thought against Otoman Empire along With Russia ( see Marasesti Battle ) and establish some agreements, regarding Basarabia ( Cernauti, Bugeac & Moldova ) which always have been Romania's territory but as always Russia never fulfill her promises & obligations but instead ''offered'' part of Bugeac ( Cadrilater to be exactly ) in exchange for her help , meaning not just acces but also Royal Romania Army to fight against Otoman Empire which it did until the treaty of peace was sign ( Royal Romanian Army entering bulgarian lands ).

Weirdest thing. Bulgaria was not invited in Berlin when the strong of the day charted and weirdly reconstructed the Balkans. The Habsburgers with the thought that Bulgaria was for a time the largest and arguably most powerful empire in Europe back in their head were against reforming a strong slavic state. The French still feeling bitter after their defeat from Russia supported their endeavors and plans for further expansion in the Balkans. Then there were the Brits living on the last few grains of star dust a remnant really from their glorious past time. They showed muscle by putting Greece on the map while at the same times having economical gains from the ottomans by equipping with arms and supplies. And thus this is how the Cheeseburgers, Give it to me Black and Great Arabia sowed the chaos in the Balkans. In an interesting turn of events the first of those once great powers is dead and the other two are removing themselves from the board. What comes around goes around i guess.

The term Tsar is derived from Caesar - an imperial title. Tsar was also translated as emperor/kaiser from russian and even some of the holy roman emperors reffered to the russian Tsar as such. The west disputed that it isnt an imperial title because there should only be one emperor (the HRE) and so they started depicting it as a king. While they are reffered to as Tsardom/Empire respectively, in both periods Russia was an empire, and naming it an empire just continued the tsardom but with a western term which would be hard to dispute, rather than 'creating' a whole new empire. Tl;dr; it was already an empire but the westernised term cemented it, even if not entirely intentional So I dont think it is at all wrong to reffer to the Russian Empire as Russian Tsardom or vice versa

UK and France always supported the Ottoman Empire, closing their eyes to the countless atrocities, conversions and slaughters carried out on the christian nations in the balkans.. The french even had a 300 year aliance with the ottomans which caused catastrophic wars between france and the Holy league. And England just didnt give a fuck because them bitches are an island nation. Instead of helping their christian brothers in Europe, they decided its a better idea to focus their energy and power in destroying and enslaving America and Africa. They deserve all the bad things getting from the immigrants. The countries that atleast try to help the balkan nations and fight the turks are Poland, Hungary, Germany, Lithuania and MOSTLY - The Russian Empire.

Serbia(Republic of Srbska, Montenegro), Romania(Moldavia), Bulgaria, Greece(Cyprus), have to be united and back Konstantinopole to Ortodoxy. As a Serb, I would not argue that Anadolia became again Greece land, but that Serbs, Romanians and Bulgarians have a travel privileges, etc. But I think the problem would be the expulsion of several million Turks from Constantinople in this modern age, do you have some ideas for that?

  • @akhsdenlew1861

Well how about we live in peace for a change? the balkans has suffered enough already. the wars that happened in balkans are like double compared to the rest of the west -.- Greece had the chance to get constantinopole in 1922-23,now attacking any nation is too risky for anyone basically. Also even if greece with the help of the balkans and the great powers manage to drive the turks into death deeper into asia... then what? Greece has 10m population and right now the vast majority are quite peacefull ( except a few nationalists that every country has). Who is gonna live there anyway? Allowing the turks to live there is gonna bring another turk uprising and indepedance war in a few years after... so its not really worth it. Like seriously even if turks suddenly dissapear from the map and the anatolia becomes greece again it will be mostly useless and dead land... we simply do not have the population for it. I think peace is the best option..

Or just move on. I guess it’s different for me as an American, but I don’t understand why there has to be such conflict. Who cares if they’re a Turk, they’re human just as well. You’re not gonna rewrite history and completely redistribute entire populations just because they conquered you at some point. If you want to claim that Anatolia should be orthodox because it was until the caliphates invaded, then I say convert all the Mediterranean back to catholic, because it was like that during the Roman Empire.

War is a horrible thing and only those who never seen war will think war will help humanity but what it does is simply destroy humanity rip the families and worse Some people just should try to empathies and think what if you were born in a very corrupt country and there was war everywhere... A vassal state, which had its own prince, its own government, its own parliament and its own army. Army participated in the battles against the Ottomans, with about 70,000 soldiers and 200 cannons. A state formed by the union of the two principalities which were vassals of the Ottoman Empire, but never any of these principalities were conquered and converted Ottoman province, led by a Turkish pasha.
