It's been 10 years that I can think of that the old range heap has been sat there. It had concrete in for ballast last time I seen it. The engine also left to the elements as well for just as long. I was hoping Mr Hewes would have purchased it but alas.

personally (after jet washing the pack and moving it somewhere clean and under cover, preferably warm with lighting) I would remove the injectors/FIP Rack and get some penetrating oil in there - it will also aid to decompress the engine

You probably know already but didn't want to look at all the comments, yes, both starters can work at same time though we never really used to. A toggle switch in dvrs cab, A bank or B bank starter, you would always use A bank (not sure what side that is?!) and only on a cold start would you crank with no fuel pumps on using A bank, then crank on B bank. Back to A bank to crank & then flick pumps on & she would fire up. Always with the APU on & charging... that would be difficult with the pack on the floor!

Bolt the nose cone back on the flywheel housing, select the worst starter motor out of the three, and weld a big 1" drive socket on the bendix/pinion shaft, then use a long 1" drive breaker bar to try turning it over by hand, the mechanical advantage of turning the ring gear might be better than simply trying to lever the teeth up and down with a prybar..

It's a pity with all those vehicles to repair, that the two of you have to work out in the rain and cold. Why doesn't the boss build you a warm workshop so you can be more productive indoors rather than wading through mud in a field? He must have a couple of bob now he has sold all those vehicles? Everything looks so primitive. But you two are such enthusiastic guys that you still make the video worthwhile to watch.

Might I suggest that you score a tarp to cover the thing and utilise the marvellous de-seizing attributes of diesel. Use it copiously, apply weekly using paintbrush and/or garden spray, chuck half a pint down each cylinder bore and top up as required weekly. Repeat cycle for a month or two before bothering to bugger about much more. It’ll make shifting stuff a great deal easier, prevent you from damaging stuff, and it’s cheaper and as effective as any of the proprietary de-seizing “magic potions.” Kerosene (household heating fuel) isn’t too shabby either but is overall a little less penetrative, though equally fractionally more lubricant, than diesel.

I do have the repair manual PDF! 6a is chally 2. 7 was used in another tank 8a is used in titan and trojan 9a is being put into challanger 3 6a and 8a are still built and remanufactured at Caterpillar Shrewsbury. Which is where I worked. And we did upgrade the starters on a particular programme. Tbh... it seems that we always used 2 for redundancy reasons.

Hi there . Love the channel. Only recently come aware of it but hell ! 👨🏻‍🔧 Nerdy Don't know if you got any further was wondering ... The gearbox PTO , through two idlers drives off the torque converter which is effectively the input shaft from the engine. Could you uncouple the prop shaft from the fan unit and rig a leaver to rock the engine ? Probably give a ratio of about 4 to 1 . There is a slipper clutch built into the PTO but it might (😂) hold enough to ease her . Also ... That's a challenger 2 transmission unit , albeit an early one. Good luck anyway fellas .

to think the other week was working on a donkey engine on a pallet on the forklift out the back of the workshop in the sunshine, shirt off, like a perfect holiday for me, had issues getting the starter motor off as well, the three bolts being Allen type, and that third one in the back, you can see the hole with a torch perfectly in line with the starter body, you cannot get a 3/8s drive in there with the socket on the end, so i had to chop one of my 6mm Allen keys up, use the longer side in a 1/4inch drive and 6mm with many extensions to fit the length behind the starter and swear at it to fall out - I WON ! and nobody died - don't you just love problem solving, its just the frustration of hacking tools up to fit that some dumb ass engineer couldn't design right in the first place to give the mechanics a chance to undo things without specialized tools and do the job in faster time i will look at our engine and see if it has a starter, pretty sure its well stripped by now

They need regular use which is costly even for the army. It’ll break the bank. However The Gue would make a lovely present to Ukraine . They really need generators Having said that Again it’s the spares issue Coventry Climax Originally a boat engine An engineer could make a lovely generator out of that in Ukraine.
