The Red Ensign speaks for anyone of the history of the nations of the English, Norman, Welsh, Scottish, Irish and French nations, as well as the defined Native American people groups within this polity of Canada. It also tells the story of this country in a picture; what a flag is supposed to do. And while many people do not recognise the Red Ensign to the Provincial Flags of MB and ON, the latter are based in honour of the Red Ensign.

wow...I was starting to think I was the only one who had those feelings. I am from Halifax but I have lived in Ontario for the most part. Its soo good to see that Provincial flag display a version of the Red Ensign. Good for them for standing up the Pearson and his rag. Honestly I get a more deep feeling looking at Ontario's provincial flag than I do towards our national flag.

Amen to that. The Canadian red ensign is a beautiful flag that reflects our history and our ties to other Commonwealth countries. Pearson only introduced the modern maple leaf flag because the Egyptians accused him of being subservient to Britain even though he was the first Canadian PM to go against British foreign policy (the Suez Canal Crisis). I always smile whenever I see the old red ensign flying alongside a road or park in Ontario. Our Loyalist heritage lives yet.

It's clear that there are still two competing visions of what Canada should be: the current multicultural one introduced by Pearson and Trudeau, and the original based on our founding as British North America. This competition is still unresolved. Although the former vision has conquered the latter in public, the latter is still part of our constitution and still has many private adherents. Many of them are young and not ethnically British. You can count me as a BNA/Red Ensign supporter.

The Ensign Represents more than just the British Nations; it includes references to the French and Irish Nations as well. The triple maple leaf could mean a great variety of things, and many people have interpreted them as they choose. It is incorrect to say that the majority of the people in the Dominion of Canada are not from the nations represented in the 'Red Ensign'.

I'm American and believe that Canada should've kept the Red Ensign. Heck, the US flag is really just a heavily-modified British Red Ensign, white stripes added to red field and Union Jack replaced w/ the stars for the states.....USA kicked out the British monarchy by force, so we got rid of the Union Jack in our flag...Canada peacefully separated from the UK, so it should keep Union Jack in flag as sign of its continued shared heritage, same for Australia and New Zealand

Pearson had a lot of guts. He was a WW1 vet with active service that required no embellishment. He was Irish Protestant, but didn't feel the need to bow to the whims of the self righteous, British-Everything, often bigoted, Orange Order (powerful in Canada at the time). Further, he was ready to accept the growth and evolution of a country that had changed dramatically since his youth. This is the difference between him and Diefenbaker, a well meaning, but neurotic neanderthal, a German Scot member of the Orange Order (though, to his credit, not a bigot), who wanted to cast the Canada of Robert Borden in stone, in perpetuity. Some Conservatives bitch that the Liberals made a flag of their own colour, but the fact is that Pearson wanted blue in the flag. The Tories just wanted an ensign, like Canada was some section of the British Navy.

***** The sad thing is that the people he was standing up to weren't British. They were Canadians, often with 3, or more, generations under their belt. They just had a petty tribal complex, fueled by cultural jealousy of the French, Anglo Protestant self-righteousness and the sense of empowerment that they felt (especially prior to WW2) of belonging to the British Empire.

2/2 The original Canadian Red Ensign (which only represents the first four provinces which is why it was updated) was the flag the the underground railway final destanation, when Canadian Pacific railway linked out country togeather, when we developed Responible Goverment Federalist model which was given directly to Austraila and NZ and was the foundation for the rest of the British Commonwealth's Demoracys, there would be no Commonwealth with out Canada.

The Maple Leaf looks a lot cleaner than the Red Ensign; it served its purpose, but Canada is its own country and deserves its own identity, not borrowing the Union Jack and slapping a few other things onto it. I respect our British heritage in this country but I'm glad someone with vision stood up 50 years ago and came up with something just for us, but for all of us.

I won't argue the fact of needing a new flag. I was young when all the options of new flags were put forth. I liked the idea of the 3 flags in red with the blue "bookends" which was to represent the two oceans each side of us. It kept with our colours of the time. When the Liberal red and white flavoured flag was forced down our throat it was a sad day. Very bland, some referred to it as looking like the flag of Japan, in those days there were still Japanese wounds from the war only 20 years before that. To me it represents the Laurentian Elite and only divided us further.

Take heart good patriot; the Red Ensign may have been removed from Canada's official banners in any capacity, but it is seen in War Memorials of Europe; it is something remembered in every flag of Manitoba and Ontario. And, finally, even with the introduction of the Red and White Maple Leaf, the country has maintained /two/ federal flags; Canada's second flag is the same of the United Kingdom. Check the Heritage Department to verify.

There is one Scottich Lion and Nova Scotia was a Scottich colony from before the Act of Union with England...

It's so bloody simplistic, that no one on the international scene can take it seriously! And no, it does not favour one 'social group' over another. If you would try taking and look at the symbols on the flag, you might get the idea. The old flag said more about us than the current flag ever will.

The Dominion of Canada (including the province of Quebec) belongs to the Anglo Canadians as the successors of the British in North America. Consider the former New France an apartment building that has been sold from the old owner (France) to the new owner (Great Britain) and consider the province of Quebec an apartment that it's tenants are either behind on their rent and or have failed to obey the new rules and who needs to be EVICTED and then tossed back to France where they belong son.

The design you speak of today, the Red and White; that is far less inclusive. The Red and White are the Crusader colours of the French and English Crowns. It /would/ be fair to saty that the majority of Canadians do not come from just a French and English background. So already, the Scottish, Welsh and Irish nations are excluded in Pearson's version. Also the Ensign is not dead. It lives on bythose that wish to fly it. It also birthed the flags of Ontario and Manitoba. The Ensign represents Unity

I am aware that king George I was related to the deposed king of England and of Scotland for there was no great Britain then. Yet George I, was not even the second in line to the tron of the region. Fact is that it was a coup d'Etat the brought the German prince to rule both Hanover and Great Britain for it was then that the two separate small kingdoms of Scotland and England came together to form Great Britain. that is an example of foreign rulers creating and developing a nation.

Most of the people who call themselves that term have never even been to Africa and are 10 generations removed from Africa , I am ONE generation removed from Québec which I have visited many times. "Don't know which country you're looking at." Are you joking or can you seriously not tell the difference between the flags of Australia, Bermuda and Hawaii? If you really can't, you should see a doctor.I would suggest looking at the coat of arms present in the flag.

actually the best countries in the world are the Norse nations-Scandanavia i.e: Danmark, Norway, Sweden Canada has always ranked behind them. but we are up there in on the list.

@waspboy69 The red ensign, aside from being boring, colonial, and hideously ugly, only has a tiny fraction of its design that's distinctly Canadian, the blazoned maples tucked away in the coat of arms. The current flag is a a well designed, instantly recognizable, and distinct package that's known and respected the world over. Plus it represents a country that grew up and decided not to have another nation's flag on its own, which is pretty dumb.

I don't know why folks would want a flag that incorporates the flag of another country. I'm Canadian, dammit - not British.

You are partly correct about the Hanovarian Dynasty of the Kingdom of Great Britain comming from the Kingdom of Hanover (Germany) but you fail to realise that the 1st Hanovarian King of Great Britain was King George I who was a German ye but he was also a great grandson of King James I of England, Scotland and Ireland. His grandmother was Princess Elizabeth o Bohemia he was the daughter of King James I, the sister of King Charles I and the aunt of King Charles II and King James II.

Thanks for uploading this. I remember seeing all of this Newsmagazine episode re-broadcast about 20 years ago on CBC Newsworld. Could you please upload the rest, hajdkvjcen? I was prompted to look for this in the wake of the controversy this week over the restoration of the names of the Royal Canadian Air Force and Royal Canadian Navy, particularly concerning their royal honorifics.

@NickB1967 If you look at the founding documents, they explicitly state that Canada was founded on two nations - the French and English (reflected in the coat of arms, which includes symbols from both those countries). The Constitution Act included the aborignial people as a third founding nation. And the crown of Canada was indiginized by the Statute of Westminster in 1931, making it not English, but Canadian. On Elizabeth II's death, we could theoretically name Celine Dion queen.

your thinking is so bizzare it baffles me and anyone with any pride in their nations foundations. What other country on this planet CHANGES thier very fabric of hertiage to 'please' minorities? I have lived in Kuwait, India, Germany, Grenanda and I have NEVER seen a political party there ACTIVELY advocate changing nationl heritage symbols to appese newcomers. The newcomers are expected to adapt to the HOME county's way. The only exception was Germany: 3r Reich/Swastika/NSDAP symbolism ban.

The argument that "Canada should have a flag the shows its colonial past" is weak. It might be stronger if that was the trend amongst national flags. There are almost no national flags that do this. I don't see any nods to the fact the Britain was once a Roman province on the Union Jack

Well, the American flag does. The 13 stripes represent the original 13 British colonies. But you are correct, very few national flags harken to their colonial days.

Although I disliked Pearson's policies, I like his straightforward speaking and the way he stands up to such a hostile audience. And I like the raucous outbursts from the Legionnaires, too. Why should they stay silent like passive gentlemen when this politician is about to take away the Union Jack they just fought 2 world wars under? In contradiction to his multicultural accommodation, Pearson's great foe was Diefenbaker, who was of German descent and proud to be represented by the Union Jack.

The Prime Minister showed real political courage in bringing this matter before the Legion and, as a decorated veteran himself, had as much right as anyone in that room to speak his mind. We seem to be losing that basic foundation of civility, that each is entitled to their own opinion and has a right to be heard.
