The Great Buttress, Mount Si - Washington State

Фильм және анимация

The Great Buttress on Mount Si’s western flank towers over the confluence of the Snoqualmie River and the town of North Bend far below. Unlike other objectives on Mount Si, the Great Buttress is almost never visited. There is no trail, and the climb involves dense bushwhacking as you begin, and navigating very steep and loose rocky sections higher up. Deep hidden holes and dangerous boulders, ready to tumble, seem to be everywhere. This is not a place for the inexperienced, but the beauty of the sheer cliffs and rock formations is truly breathtaking. The Pacific Northwest is such a great place to explore new destinations.

Wow. Wow. Wow! That music made this video the most intensely powerful ever with almost every scene causing me to cry “go back”….”you’re nuts”…”you’re never gonna make it”…”put me in your will, please”. But no. It all ended with a satisfying view of safety and security. You folks will hike again. Thank God.

Thank you so much for showing me a part of Mt. Si I’ll never see. Mt. Si is beautiful.

Thanks for the bird’s eye view of the western face. I used to hike Mt Si every spring to train for my annual JMT/PCT trips, but never climbed the haystack because I always brought my dog along... or maybe I was exhausted from carrying a few gallons of water for ballast. Anyway, lots of perches on the shear west side to sit and have lunch and enjoy the view.

You're welcome! Mt. Si is such a beautiful hike, and it sounds like you have some wonderful memories from your training trips. Bringing your dog along must have made those hikes extra special.

This is the video I wish I could have taken when I was there! Once I went to the big orange rock at the top by myself and then another time with two others we started up here and did a traverse of the whole ridge to the main Si summit and down the normal trail. How did you get the idea to go here?

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! Your traversing of the ridge sounds like an incredible adventure. I came across this spot through a combination of research.

I did this hike, last year I think. However, it didn't look as steep from my vantage point of

View from the top is gorgeous but I hate bushwhacking 🤷🏽‍♂

Have you ever done the Black Canyon route? I hear it's quite challenging, and as you say, this area is almost never visited. I've often wondered why more rock climbers aren't attracted to the west face of Si and Crater Lake Peak - sure seems there would be some interesting routes there. and the approaches aren't that bad. But I'm not a rock climber, so what do I know!

I've never done the Black Canyon route. I can only imagine it's similar to this one, or perhaps even more challenging.

I heard that North Bend has a local statue prohibiting rock climbing on the west facing cliffs of Mount Si but I haven't been able to track it down, if it exists. The rock is not that great and has resulted in many difficult Search and Rescue operations and several fatalities. The 1997 Mount Si NRCA public use guide says "In contrast to the high use at Little Si, less than a half dozen rock climbers climb the face of Mount Si. Climbing activity may have an impact on mountain goats and peregrine falcons that use this area. Due to the nature of the rock on Mount Si, extensive "cleaning" of the rock occurs. This results in the climber removing large rocks and debris to make the area safe for climbing. This is a safety concern for neighborhoods and hikers below the climbing. However, climbing is the only way to monitor and study wildlife (mountain goats, raptors) and climbing here should be allowed by permission of land owner for monitoring purposes."
