The Great British Radio Play Presents ...
Appleby's End
by Michael Innes
Publication date 1982-04-10
Dramatization of the 1945 crime novel.
Appleby's End was the name of the station where Detective Inspector John Appleby got off the train from Scotland Yard. But that was not the only coincidence. Everything that happened from then on related back to stories by Ranulph Raven, Victorian novelist - animals were replaced by marble effigies, someone received a tombstone telling him when he would die, and a servant was found buried up to his neck in snow, dead. Why did Ranulph Raven's mysterious descendants make such a point of inviting Appleby to spend the night at their house?

Well that's what it is
My wife refers to these affectionately as ‘plays on the wireless’. Which is remarkable as she is barely in her 40s. A small sign of hope for Western civilisation!

NO BORING BITS TO MAKE THE STORY LONGER, AND ALL THE CHARACTERS INCLUDE LONG OR SHORT MADE THE WHOLE STORY WORK SO WELL

This is wonderful, hilarious. I may have to read the original!
Great script , and acting, but the complexity of the plot brought home to me that I might be losing my grip 😮

I found it very witty and easy to follow. The acting was excellent especially the late John Hurt who is sadly missed 💔🏴🇬🇧
Thank you so much. I can't read any longer, or ride a bike. Huh. Are there any more books in this series? 🌞 I love Appleby- ⭐️ a fresh man. M. Illinois usa, Illinois

Michael Innes wrote a whole series of books about Inspector Appleby, starting in 1936!
Am I hearing the late great John Hurt? 👌❤️
Phew... that was unusual , quite exhausting . With such a great cast it's hard to fail ; but , not an easy listen as it's structure and characters are fairly unconventional ; and , very often completely chaotic . Expect the unexpected and accept elements of cacophonous confusion and you'll be on roughly the right track....

@Adz Dahlman It's amusing how you occasionally get the odd commenter who has no understanding of a good review like yours, and tries to project his own insecurities onto you. A commenter who didn't even write a literary review, never mind a book, comes over as rather petty and childish. 🙄 😄
"Applebys End" is perhaps not just far and away my favorite Michael Innes novel, but my favorite book period Ive read it, and listened to it countless times. This adaptation is pretty good but you miss a lot of nuance. And humor. The romance is skimped. The scene when Appleby visits Judith in her studio is great. But in the book he finds her note on his pillow and it's just about the high point of the novel.
I was convinced Stephen Fry was in this one given the similarities to Lord Melchitt

That's Aragorn from the animated Lord of the Rings!
I knew I recognized one of the actors from Count Duckula. Jack May, who did Igor.
Wow!!!! Convoluted, manic, eccentric drama and I am not sure I get it.

Definitely the weirdest one of these I've listened to. The ending does kind of make sense, but you're left in what feels a complete manic daze for the rest of it.

Written in 1945, be aware of what chaos existed at that time in the UK, the European continent, & in WWII east-Asia.

@@mikeburnett3sabbath literally means Saturday .. you know the church changed it to Sunday during one of the first churche meetings , to make it easier to covert those who worshipped the sun.. the sabbath will always be Saturday . Even if you take your day of rest on a Sunday and go to church in a Sunday . Which unarguably is the wrong day to keep holy..

Same here, a couple of months ago. Only came back to read the new comments ripping into it. Terrible advert for the writer of the novel (who I'd never heard of); suggests they're definitely one to avoid in future. Everything felt so random and pointless; so glad I've forgotten pretty much all of it now.
I got bored 1/10 of the way through! Sorry.
Oh dear, Can you take that voice out the beginning?
