Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area features
approximatley 150 miles of trails across nearly 8,000
acres of rugged mountain. Created from strip mining
roads and logging roads, trails at Black Mountain offer
a variety of experiences and levels of difficulty.
The majority of trails at Black Mountain are multi-use
trails and open to all types of vehicles including ATVs,
side-by-sides, dirtbikes, trucks, jeeps and buggies.
Some trails are restricted for ATV or dirtbike use only.

SIGNS AND CLASSIFICATIONS
All trails at Black Mountain are clearly marked and
classified depending on the degree of difficulty using
the system described below. Many trails are classified
both for ATVs (Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced)
and 4x4 Trucks (Class 2, 3, 4 or 5).
* Beginner ATV Trail (Green)Trail is intended to be suitable for novice riders and those who don't have the skill or desire to ride more difficult trails. Trail presents a low level of exposure to the rider.
* Intermediate ATV Trail(Blue)Trail is intended suitable for majority of enthusiast population. Requires well developed skills and will prove challenging to the average rider.
* Advanced ATV Trail (Red)Trail is intended for expert riders and dedicated enthusiasts. Trail will tax the skill of the dedicated enthusiast and will present a higher level of exposure to the rider.
* Class 2 4x4 Trail (Green)Rutted or rocky road. No shelves but rocks up to 9�. Water crossing usually less than hub deep. Passable mud. Grades moderate, up to 15 degrees. Side hill moderate up to 15 degrees. 4WD under most conditions. No width problems.
* Class 3 4x4 Trail (Blue)Quite rocky or deep ruts. Rocks to 12½. Water crossings may exceed hub depth with strong currents. Shelves to 6½. Mud may require checking before proceeding. Moderate grades to 20 degrees. Side hill may approach 30 degrees. 4WD necessary and second attempts may be required with stock vehicles.s
* Class 4 4x4 Trail (Orange)Heavy rock and/or severe ruts. Rocks exceeding hub height frequent. Shelves to 12½ Deep mud or uphill mud sections. Steep grades to 25 degrees and can be loose or rocky. Water crossings may exceed 30½ in depth. Side hill to 30 degrees. Body damage possible. Experience needed. Vehicle modifications helpful.
* Class 5 4x4 Trail (Red)Severe conditions. Extreme caution recommended. Impassible by stock vehicles. Winch-ing required. Trail building necessary. May be impassible. Impassable under anything but ideal conditions. Vehicle damage probable. Extreme caution necessary.
