The Grateful Dead-Box of Rain-Shoreline Amphitheatre
The Grateful Dead-Summer Solstice-Shoreline Amphitheatre 06/21/1989
Box of Rain
I wanted to upload this, so we can all go back in time, a time when we could go to a place, and forget about the outside world, and just be part of conscience of minds and friends. How I long to have this time now. I want you all to enjoy what I bring to you here. This is a great song, the crowd is chanting for Phil. So the bands gives them what they want. It looks like they are having a good time. Jerry is smiling and having a blast. View in high quality

Jerrys smile when Phil signs to Bill what song he is gonna sing is priceless
I grew up in Palo Alto close enough to Shoreline that I could hear the bands if I sat out on the porch. I could always tell when the Dead were in town and I'd hop on my bike and ride over to check out the parking lot scene. I'd walk around a bit then find a nice spot on a grassy bank to take it all in. Had pretty awesome experiences at night riding back through the bay lands watching the the lights of the police cars as they cruised around the golf course chasing the hippies away.
The best fans in the world! I wish it would have lasted longer. I miss those days so much!!!!

Like Phil said ( Thank You Robert Hunter ) “ Such a long long time to be be gone and a short time to be there “. Those were the last words of my late Brother Michael’s Eulogy read by my son Stephen 🙏

Ditto that
The intro before the music even starts, with the fans shouting we want Phil, and bob and Jerry laughing....brings many chills in a great way

I’m so with you lol … I was on the east coast that tour and BOR was amazing experience ❤
I was always so sad that it seemed Phil was so uncomfortable singing lead. This song to his father was one of the best songs that was ever written by the band. Yet, there are so few decent live versions of this. I saw them live on Phil’s birthday on Long Island and they closed with this. I’d love to but, I can’t say it was spectacular!

The Great and Immortal Robert wrote the Lyrics to this tune. When My Older Brother Michael passed away 5 years ago , My Wonderful Son Stephen did his eulogy. As I stand next to My heart broken Mother , My Son looks at Me and sez Dad , in The words of the Great Robert Hunter, such a long long time to be gone and a short time to be there 🙏🥲 I will never forget that day as long as I live.

You're gorgeous by the way...
on my deathbed, this song, a hit of good clean acid
I was there with my daughter, who was then 2. I got her her first tie dye shirt. Miss you Jerry RIP
Such a long long time to be gone and a short time to be there. Thanks Stephen. Miss You Dad. 🥲
Hearing it live is much better than any studio recording.
First Grateful Dead song I ever listened to on record back when I was 4 in 79. fan ever since.

johnnyv1938 Me too! In 1976. I believe this show was the first time I heard them do it live.
Phil Lesh looks like Hareld Ramos when he does that "who me, hey" gesture. Full on Stripes vibes.
This is all a dream we dreamed one afternoon long ago :) thank you for sharing this one!! This was my first show (deadhead from Germany, in case anyone remembers ;) ...)
oh my gosh i LOVE Phil doing the "Box of Rain" signal before the song starts...kinda like a baseball coach giving the signal to steal a base or something. And yeah, Bobby is totally the pretty boy in the shorts! And Jerry...i miss him SO much!
I’m here listening to Box of Rain thinking of My late older Brother Michael. Gone almost 5 Years. Such a long long time to be gone and a Short time to be there. 🙏🥲

Shoreline was still pretty brand new 🤩
Really great Ty
Phil sang 3 songs in Chicago in '95, I was trippin and laughing to my buddies yelling "Never had a lesson!" Childhoods End, Broken Arrow & Box; what a show! 🥲
Killer tie dye Phil. Love the boys being the boys.
Great rendition of a classic!😊 Sidenote: Phil always had nice hair!
we want phil
Love when Phil sings!
This clip is priceless. The music.....
The studio version of this song could move mountains. This version? Not so much.
I was there. I drove from Utah for the show.
So great this exists
This was a great show....damn FUN city
I was there, my, so long ago!
We Want Phil!

Agreed. For a bunch of roughly 50 Year old Dopers from San Francisco, they were just incredible. Also , Don’t ever forget The Great Robert Hunter who co wrote this song. R.I.P. Robert Hunter. 🙏
So precious!
This was a great show! I had just flown back from the Bahamas and brought a big conch shell. We got folks to line up along the back rim of the amphitheater and when I blew the conch, we all rolled down as one 'unbroken chain'. If you were there, you remember getting kicked in the head! Thanks for the memories.
Oh jerry.xo.
Great great song
Happy 80th Phil !
Inch your way through Dead dreams to another land.... :-)
I love Jerry Garcia
schöne musik Danke
ahh this song...please don't be surprised when you find me dreaming too....
@XDrums34 Phil is priceless...this song touches me....I always loved it when Phil sang.
such a freaking awesome song.. gotta say just was lucky enough to c Jerry. however Stu Allen fronted Dark Star at days between and it's always the song.. not the singer.. Stu what an amazing day it was. thank you from the top/bottom of my DH heart. I'm 66 and never have I seen an all day hero performance like that. cudis
I'm 14 and same here
GOD BLESS THE GRATEFUL DEAD 🙏😁💕
Happy birthday, Phil

having fun :))
His voice cracked because he loved his father so much.
that sounds right for me too
I WAS THERE>>>>>>
I love how short Mickey's shorts are!
God bless this perfect mess. What a good night for Persian white...Bless da' rest...if that's even possible.
Phil's gestures to Mickey and Billy at 1:05 are priceless.
We want Phil, we want Phil!
OMG‼🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰💎💎💎💎💎💎💎
They are going to the outdoor festival Rothbury in Michigan, july 4th, check it out
sweet shorts Bob
5:39 = magic
@clickswitchh that's how goood the shtuff is out here! LOL at how hard they are tripping right now :)
Phil chokes a little in the beging of the song it is about his father , Let their be songs to PHIL the air
This is a FANTASTIC ???don't want to call it a video, it's obviously pro filmed, curious as to for what??? (the person who I would normally ask is being weird right now, so I'll have to wait, darn it!) But it is awesome for all Warriorstrail says above & more IMO. I like Shoreline, it wasn't my fav but. I liked the late 80's Bobby w/ pnytail & BRENT! but yeah, it's THAT beg w/ the "we want Phil" chant inc & the boys talking it over & all of them smiling thru out & the views of heads dancing A++
I am eternally guilty for my curse. I was unable to be a part of this because I was not yet born.
LOL 1:04 "BOX....OF....RAIN"

@Millarpro I still can't get how he sounded SO good on the original American Beauty recording. They didn't have auto-tune back then, and even if they did, it still wouldn't have done that good of a job. Maybe his singing just degraded over the years. Who knows. Still a great song. The American Beauty version still brings a tear to my eye. The Grateful Dead...A true AMERICAN band. I love it.

I had the same thought and would love to hear from somebody with some expert insight on that matter. Live he sounds like a sugnifcantly less than average vocalist but the studio version sounded great

he was 19 years younger in 1970 .. plus studio EQ and more harmony made the song epic ...
@XDrums34 ... Everyone knew what was up after that....
@funxyzzy ME TOO!!!!!! :>)
I missed them this time around unfortunately. I remember in 2004 it was $35 to see them on the lawn. I hope there's another tour like that. they can't go out like this. Stick with the outdoor amphitheaters PLEASE! You need to be out on a lawn to appreciate a dead show.

under the open sky ....
Phil seemed to have been having a little problem focusing that night
Looks like a reaharsal after 30 years stopped.. Honestly, if I was in this concert I would leave to take a beer and wait for the next band.. I love this band, but the musicians were completely out of shape in 89... If you think they are doing a good job in this movie, what do you tell me about John Fogerty or Paul McCartney? They are older and so good as in the past.. Regards, Ricardo
lol i think phil wants to do box o rain
hahaha i hear you on those shorts haha i have some deadhead friends who were on tour for 20 years and such, they say that bob sucks! we will be listening to an epic show and a good bob tune would come on.....they would say fuck this and skip to the nest tune. i always got pissed. lol but they had no reason. ide ask y and all they would say is he just sucks! haha peace bro
maybe I'll find direction around some corner where it's been waiting to meet me Sounds like a plan
eh, to each his own. lol peace love and light my brother
LOL, I guess it his lounge singer voice and his goofy personality; e.g. "I'll be stir-fried." It's an acquired taste. Although Ace is one of my all-time favorite albums. Peace

Yea XDrums, you see how Jerry laughed...
lol he is goofy huh? merry xmas my brother
someone turn phil's mic up
LOL I'm not hating on him, just observing. I mean, look at those shorts! I remember a guy asking the Dead why Bob looks like a girl to which Garcia replied: "Hell, back in the '60s sometimes Bob looked better than a girl..."
why stop at 5 !?!?! rookies
Fantastic song, one of my favourites, but sadly this loses the momentum you get with the studio version ..... disappointing, if I dare say it .....
Phil had a liver transplant due to Hep C. You should probably look it up on the internet since you have no idea!
lmao hahaha may i ask y? i always hear people say that with no good reason to hate on him lol
at least a 5 strip if your on your death bed
not the best version, but still good :)
because he's such an excellent musician phil's singing pitch is actually pretty good but his voice is so lacking in power the words have trouble getting out and being heard..it sounds much better when bob and jerry join in on the chorus.
Phil's Weakness was wine. That's why he had a kidney transplant at the Mayo Clinic about 18 or 19 years ago.
