THE GRAND NATIONAL - COLOUR

(10 Apr 1977) The 1977 Grand National will go down in the annals of Horse Racing history as the year of 'Red Rum's' third win. ® ® Also making 'National' history was Charlotte Brew, on her mount 'Barony Fort', the first woman to ride in the race. The gallant Charlotte nearly completed the course, but her horse refused at the 27th fence. ® ® At Becher's Brook the second time round, the two leading horses fell and 'Red Rum' took the lead to romp home twenty-five lengths ahead of second placed 'Churchtown Boy'.

Lovely to see Rummy being so warmly greeted in the winner's enclosure, as this is not shown in the BBC footage of the same race! Great cheering from the crowd, also! Long live Red Rum's memory. Aintree will never see his like again

what happened to make Boomdocker refuse he was jumping so well and way out in front and poor Andy Pandy coming a cropper too while having a good lead. it's almost like the racing Gods had decreed that this was Red Rum's year for immortality

I think the stables are nearby and while the fences is one of the smallest there have been refusals are it possibly triggered by horse memory. 1989 and 1994 come to mind where 2 or more horses refused at it.
