I know many people will say AP McCoy is the greatest jump jockey ever, but for me it will always be Peter Scudamore. When he was at his peak for David Nicholson and Martin Pipe he more than once got over 200 winners. And those were the days when there were no Sunday meetings and jockeys didn't fly around the country to 2 meetings a day.

Used to be a feat just to get around. Now you have 7 and 8yo winning it every year because owners more willing to risk it. The race is worth more than the Gold Cup, it's made the entire sport of NH racing a bit farcical. May as well go for the national as a novice and then gold cup following year. Doubt we'll ever see a horse older than 10yo ever win the race again.

The emphasis on speed is the reason why older horses won't stand a chance anymore. They just won't be kept in training anymore. This is going to revolutionize breeding.

If that was Beecher's Brook before it was modified, what the Christ was it like before 🤯 In 2022 it is now much smaller, covered brook and the nothing like that drop. And it's levelled off on the landing too. They've destroyed the course/race.

Damien Kearns. In 1961 they changed the style of the fences from upright to sloping, which makes it easier for horses to jump. The biggest fence was the Chair. Stands 5ft 2inches.

@@scoutpups Hasn't made it one bit safer for horses or jockeys armchair genius. Horse's still fall and get killed, another one in 2022. The facts don't back it up. The horse's have gotten as small as the jumps have gotten smaller, Tiger Roll for example. It used to be a race for horses 17h+.

@@johncraske There are also horse fatalities in horses running around on their own. It's irrelevant. Animals die. It's their upkeep we want to keep a handle on. We're not going to prevent animals dying. And shouldn't want to. This is where the argument about racing being 'cruel' gets skewed in my opinion. If you want to see real 'cruelty' look at the commercial dairy or meat industry. Racing is not a problem.

Rich man's sport, they don't care about the animals because of it, all about greed and making money, this year 3 horses died and I don't believe people think it's acceptable, ever year deaths .sick people, too many horses all at once, hope more humans get trampled! 😡

  • @RichardKeogh26

3 horses didn't die in this year's race, sadly Hill Sixteen did and his trainer has laid the blame firmly at the feet of the activists who delayed the race causing all the horses to get upset. He had never fallen before they caused the trouble. As for deaths every year that's again false. There have been numerous alterations made to the course in recent years and between 2013 to 2018 inclusive there were no fatalities. NH isn't a rich man's sport. Yes there are some rich owners such as JP McManus and Rich Ricci but there are hundreds of syndicates for small money and they definitely don't go into for money. A very, very small percentage of owners will ever make a return on NH racing, they would have more chance spending it all on lottery tickets. As for the views of people, I would've thought the fact activists had to be rescued by police from Liverpudlians who live near the track would show what ordinary folk think of them.
