In Blackpool the council is still giving free school meals for kids. The local Tesco is giving them away too. There are some places trying to help but it's absolutely disgusting that we subsidise politicians when they pay is meant to reflect the cost of living, and it reflects it more than the average person because we are all cutting back. I bet we even pay the energy bills for these malevolent scum.

It's a pity to see the state of UK now. Politicians are pushing for tax break, while the policy didn't help poor family who even didn't pass the limit to pay the tax. They are pushing for privatisation while companies pursue profits above all (like water company discharge raw sewage to rivers and sea. They are pushing for "handouts" for people affected with high energy bills while their "handouts" is not enough and benefit the companies. Funds and tenders given to shady companies while claiming no magic money tree for poor family. And yet, there are still cults who will vote Tories for all 12 years of fuck-up and still blaming other or even making comparison "but others will be worse"

I struggled with period products at school. I didn't quite get to socks, but I'd take a handful from No Limits, a mental health charity, and when I couldn't get them there then tissues or two pairs of underwear when I couldn't access any. Our school offered them- for a pound each. A pound for a tampon that wouldn't last the day. Pads were even more expensive (I think about £1.50) and while they'd last, they were the massively thick ones which showed through your skirts or trousers, so you'd have to tie your jumper around your waist, which wasn't allowed. If you couldn't afford them, the nurse would give you a sympathetic look and ask if you could wait until the end of the day. Did she think? We could just? Suck them back in? I have PCOS, and I wasn't the only one, at least five that I knew about, and probably several more did as well, or some other kind of reproductive disorder, meaning that it wasn't just a week of bleeding a month, it could be a couple of weeks, a couple of times a month, while your period is like Niagra falls. By that point, a single tampon is about as much use as a cotton bud. The problem was, if you couldn't afford sanitary products, your parent(s) were often working a lot and couldn't just come and pick you up just because you'd bled through your skirt. 30% of our school was free school meals, about 50% on benefits. If our parents couldn't afford to feed us, did they think we could afford a pound a day for a week? The disgusting thing was, they were donated to our school for *free*. They were donated by No Limits and women's charities, but the schools wanted to make a profit, to the point where girls' attendance was terrible and our uniforms were stained. It was disgusting.

We also have a community program twice a week selling and giving veggies and fruit. If you can afford, you don't pay. Bakers among others donate. Any money earned buys food during the winter for the same program and groceries receive tax credits for not throwing out. In the 21st century, no child should go hungry. "Who complains about ugly veg" - no-one. But they just don't buy them. And that's because Waitrose only have the most beautiful, manicured, polished, and individually wrapped F&V, and so M&S and Tescos try to emulate, and so on down the line, and before long all the lumpen, misshapen potatoes are just left in the field. Simple as that.

Why doesn't the NHS provide women with the products they need. It is a health issue. I'm sorry if this sounds ignorant I'm American so I was just wondering.

  • @butteredcrumpet4446

Because unfortunately, periods are deemed to be a women's problem, not a health issue. It's the same problem you're having on your side of the pond: reproductive issues, be it periods, pregnancy, and abortions etc are judged to be women's issues and not health issues. Tampons and sanitary towels have regularly been classed as luxury items, despite being a necessity. Women's health in most countries is overlooked and getting treated for conditions like endometriosis, PCOS and other issues is difficult because we're brushed off as exaggerating and so on. Periods aren't taken seriously despite the fact that they can be crippling, because we're just silly little women making a fuss. In light of all that, why would politicians (who set policy, not the NHS, and who dictate the budget) give a damn about making sure women have tampons or sanitary towels?

@@butteredcrumpet4446 oh thank you for clearing that up. I am always willing to admit to sounding dumb. I always hear great things about the NHS and I am sure for some things it is wonderful, but it should be inclusive. It breaks my heart whenever I hear that a young woman has to miss school or work because they are on their period. It happens hear too in the States but for now we have things like planned parenthood that will provide free products if you are in need. It sounds like from other comments I read that there might also be a similar thing in Britain but not as accessible. It sucks either way and womens "issues" should be womens health problems and covered.

@@carveylover The NHS is a wonderful thing. The problem is that we have had consecutive Tory governments that have cut their budgets, as well as cutting benefits and so on. It means that the NHS has to prioritise, and unfortunately things the Tories can claim are not a priority fall by the wayside. They'd like to privatise healthcare, something I would hate to see. The access you have to things depends on where you live, and also poverty is a real problem. Given the increase in food prices, more people have to go to food banks and are still not eating enough. Household fuel bills are doubling and only going up, and then there's petrol/diesel. If you are a family already pushed to breaking, how do you afford period products? If you have to choose between your daughter eating and her missing school and going with out period products, the choice is unfortunately an obvious one. Women's health being ignored is an almost universal thing. A quick glance on social media shows how uninformed people are, and it makes it easy for governments to act like it is unreasonable to want period products to be cheap and easily accessible, and for doctors to brush off health concerns. The reason sex ed in the US is so abysmal in many places is for this reason; it was easy to say abortions are wrong to people who believe the viability of pregnancies can be checked via a camera down the throat and so on. Ignorance is used as a weapon to strip away rights, and it's heartbreaking.
