The Goofiest Official D&D Monster Art You'll Ever See

Ойындар

There is a lot of Dungeons and Dragons artwork out there for a wide variety of D&D monster books, ranging from AD&D to 5E Dungeons and Dragons. I have gone through a lot of that art in my day and in this video, I'm going to rank what in my opinion is the most hilarious, crazy, or just plain funny pieces of D&D art into a top 10 list for your viewing pleasure. I love every one of these creature depictions, and hopefully, you will too!

The Osquip looks like rat royalty, & by that I mean it's a normal rat that has several hundred generations of severe & intense inbreeding. Inbreeding would explain why some of them have even more legs than the usual six.

funniest thing about the roving mauler to me has to be that its baased on a real demon from irl demonology. there are litteral people who tried and summon it.

Not gonna lie the Roving Mauler honestly looks like an obscure Shin Megami Tensei demon to me, everytime I see a picture of one I think “wait a minute, did this guy just put an SMT demon in a D&D video?” And then I remember that this is actually a D&D Monster.

I believe in the past you mentioned some of the DnD creatures being made by magic users such as wizards. Most spell casters tend to be seen as these badass spell flinging smart guys. No one considers the ones who might have severe alcohol problem and decide to make random critters for their drunken entertainment...

Btw the Roving Mauler is a old demon from mythology. It appears in the grimoire Pseudomonarchia Daemonum. If anyone is interested in knowing more about it, look up "Buer" which is the creatures name.

The osquip was originally the ulsio or Martian rat of Burrough's Barsoom novels. They just renamed them because the originals were still under copyright. The ulsio is described as a hairless rat with six legs grown to the size of an Airedale terrier. The eyes are small and close together, nearly hidden within fleshy sockets. Its jaws are pure bone, extending beyond the flesh of its face to give the appearance of a rotting face, with five sharp and spade-like teeth in each jaw. One dragon magazine article in the 1990s made it a type of beaver.

I'm surprised you didn't mention that the Roving Mauler is based on a "real" demon! His name is Buer and he comes from the grimoire Pseudomonarchia Daemonum. He was originally described as being a centaur, but was re-imagined as the now iconic lion's head with 5 goats legs in the 19th century. The fact that it's a beast and not an aberration or even a fiend is truly bizarre. The thing that really gets me thought is that they replaced the goat legs with lion's legs. It's as if they were trying to downplay how nonsensical its anatomy is and pass it off as something that could actually exist, but just made it look silly instead of creepy as a result.

Great video. Two things I want to offer up: The Disenchanter has a really cool monster ecology article for Pathfinder 1E which makes it really interesting and the Roving mauler is based on a piece of medieval christian art from a manuscript which is why it's so effing weird.

In the Dragon, Xorvintaal entry for 3.5's Monster Manual 5 Singh the Immense (the example Exarch provided in the book) is drawn basically as a fleshy ball with limbs; he's a human Rogue/Shadowdancer that's described as a very capable and dangerous combatant, but his artwork is so anatomically improbable that he always made me laugh.

I first encountered the intellect devourer playing the first Neverwinter Nights video game. The game offers helpful descriptions of each of the 4 unique magical creatures you have to find around the city, and the intellect devourer is "a large fleshy brain with legs." First time I played I thought that sounded gross and silly. The game prompts you to go where the intellect devourer is hiding first, so it's a very natural first boss. I never got past that thing for 10+ years. It's the closest thing I have to a nemesis

Yup. This list panned out almost how I imagined it, including #3 and #1 being in the top three (although I think #3 is based on some old mythological beastie as I've seen it in other places - including the video game Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night - but I'm not super confident of that statement). Expected #2 higher on the list to be honest, as, yeah, it's a funny-looking creature, but there are much much worse. ;) Yeah, I've always found #1 to be hilarious-looking, even back when I first bought the 2E Monstrous Manual. :)

the piercer could work a bit better with environmental events like gravity changes. building tumbling or a 1/day misty step effect. currently a funny one to me is the 5e psurlon art. the hoof legs and thick body are just odd for a contender of a psionic aberration against illithids.

My most ridiculous (and I don't find it even funny, it makes me cringe and not even laugh) is the Giff, one of the only monsters I really hate and can't stand, and it's silly beyond silly. I actually use the Vargouille, Disenchanter and the Piercer in my D&D World, I like the creatures, Vargouilles are awesome monsterous undead-replacements for bats. Disenchanter, I like some of the artwork Pathfinder used for them, and I love magic-hungering monsters. Piercers, I like them as baby ropers, gives the ropers more lore. The lion-thing with wheels looks like one of the Dante's Demon Lords, I think Decarabia or another one.
