    I had a HPDI Woody Woodpecker 200 in 2002 I think and had some issues that were resolved by Yamaha. Then a 150 2 stroke on a 2007 Ranger 617. Then 2009 Four Stroke 225 which was awesome ! Then my current 250 four stroke Off Shore which is the best yet. I had a Ranger dealer tell me once they never get any of the Yamahas they sell back for anything. Mercury a different story. Thanks Andy

    Dad bought a new Ranger 692 Fisherman with a 150 Yamaha ProV and on the opening day morning the lower unit chewed itself up. First time I ever saw tears in my dad’s eyes. Took it to a dealer in I’Falls. Yamaha redeemed itself, put a new lower unit on an airplane on Sunday, installed Monday morning and back on the water that afternoon. 29 years later not a single issue. Had a F115 on my first boat, 1850 Fish Hawk, ran perfect for the 19 seasons I had it, never choked it to start, always started after 4-5 cranks even first time out each season.

    The only Yamaha I've ever owned was a YZ125 Dirt bike. Loved it. As far as outboards go, Johnson/Evinrude and Mercury are the only ones I've ever owned. However, my uncle had a Ranger w/ a 150 ProV Yamaha HPDI. The thing that stood out to me was both the throttle response and overall smoothness throughout the entire rev range. Again, the throttle response was absolutely neck snapping.

    One area not mentioned on the Yamaha's which is ashame was a major issue was the exhaust corrosion for the F225's, some F250's. Lots of customers having to each new powerheads and Yamaha not making good on replacements for the factory defect. They did I hear eventually offer discounted parts, but still in the several thousand $$ range to fix them.

    What we do with the SHO‘s it’s all about heat and running the living crap out of them. If they were not run hard out of the box you’ve got to deglaze the cylinders and we use Yamaha internal engine cleaner procedure, double up on ring free, then back to lake for 30 plus miles of wide open without any breaks. Doing that will set the rings on 90+ percent of them in our area.

    If it makes oil it was either not broken in correctly or it is idling toooo long, check the downloads they will tell you everything. 4.2 use plasma honed cylinder walls. Do the break in exactly as Yamaha says to do is critical for proper ring seating. Things I've learned in my last 2 years taking classes at Yamaha Marine University.

    On oil dilution: Improper break-in, excessive idling, too low octane fuel are the main causes. There’s a handful of maintenance due issues that can make the symptoms worse as well. Most of the original list can be resolved with YIEC, and a couple hours hard running. On the maintenance side, a pair of thermostats and regular usage of Ring Free and conditioner usually resolves it.

    Yam mechanic here, from what I've been told here the oil making is a result of people over filling because Yams are a little difficult to get an accurate level reading or it's being over loaded and run to hard. I would add as a bad that the mid 2000s 150s had balancer issues and even tho they have fixed the balancer if the engine over heats a little or the prop is hit the balancer can come apart. If that happens and not caught in time your engine is dead.

    Here is what i was told about making oil. My dealer told me the rings weren't seated correctly, mind you i bought a boat with 250 hours on it. My dealer cleaned the motor, I wish I could remember the process they did. However, when i got the boat back his exact words were run your boat wide open 6.000 rpms for an hour. I ran 35 minutes down the river, turned around and ran back another 40 minutes and have not had an issue since. I was told Yamaha's do not like all the Idling and need to be ran like a scalded dog now and then.

    IMO the "making oil" deal with the Yamahas is primarily from the plasma cylinder bore liners. Some of the auto makers do that to their engines and a lot of them have oil consumption or dilution issues. Just hard to beat an iron bore for oil retention and ring sealing.

  • @omieyouknowme

    @omieyouknowme

    3 ай бұрын

    Plasma bore has been around 3 decades, and outboards have been bare cast aluminum for what 75 years now. Making oil by not sealing rings is more to improper break in. Iron blocks have same issue.

  • @sdvten

    @sdvten

    3 ай бұрын

    @@omieyouknowme A few outboards have been using plasma cylinder liners for a little over a decade. Yamaha uses it on their 4.2l V6. A cylinder plating like nikasil is not the same material or process. Cylinder bores are not left plain ole cast aluminum. The automotive industry has been using the plasma cylinder lining process much longer and on more engines that the outboard industry. There is a reason why a lot of those blocks are bored out and iron sleeves installed even if the bore is within spec. A cast iron bore just holds oil better and seals better. The whole improper break in thing is BS. You can break the motor in perfectly and still have problems with making oil. Outboards tend to have a lot of extended low rpm time and 4 strokes are not the best at that application. The smooth hard non porous plasma spray transfer lining just makes it worse.

  • @omieyouknowme

    @omieyouknowme

    @@sdvten so I am not understanding then, the old outboards built back in day where bare blocks. I have taken apart old eglins gales and old Evinrude from 1960 up to 1990. All where bare aluminum with no sleeve. What did they do back in those days. Or was it because they where two strokes the oil mixture in combination with low compression did not matter. I'm aware of the alum cylinders being coated, bmw had a lot issues with theirs early in in 90's as I'm sure other makes too. It's one thing to build an engine in car that rarely sees 5500 rpm for extended runs vs an outboard. I guess I have never had to deal with one with bad rings. Head gaskets mostly

  • @sdvten

    @sdvten

    3 ай бұрын

    @@omieyouknowme Some of the 2 stroke outboards used a cylinder bore plating like nikasil and some had cast iron sleeves. With 2 strokes (especially non direct injected) oil control is not as important, just ring sealing. Oil is getting to both sides of the cylinder. DI 2 strokes with spot oil injection is a little different but like other 2 strokes if some fuel/oil gets past the rings into the crankcase its not a big deal. The 2 strokes also, unless modified run less compression than their 4 stroke counterparts.

    I am looking for "real world" feed back on their current F150/F175/F200 4 cylinders. How did they make those motors so light ? Is it worth the cost to go from the F175 to the F200 and burn premium ?

    The making oil is a result of the break in process and lack of temp to set the rings according to my dealer. We went out and drove it HARD. Big long run where we stopped and fished for a couple of hours to let it heat cycle. Ran the whole way back. Never made another drop after that. This was when the motor was new and only just outside of its break in period.

    The SHO’s that make oil are the engines that were not broke in correctly. If the engine is not broke in by taking it out, running a full tank of gas through it. And not by running it for 20 minutes to the next spot. The only way a 4 stroke can make oil is because the rings aren’t seated right, they need to get it hot enough to seat. In break in you need to load the boat down, trim all the way down, make it work. There ya go 🙂

    It's not oil It's fuel that make the oil level rise. Caused by excessive idling a cold or Luke warm engine, change oil and filter and do your idling after a good run.

    You overlooked the F225 exhaust issue, that was a bad and ugly. If ignored would corrode the block/oil pan and ruin the power head. They dropped the ball on that one. I have one in my shop now waiting on the new exhaust kit.

    Jetski issues for Yamaha are engine mounts are made of poppadoms , all hose clips down low are mild steel not stainless rot through and cause problems and supercharger clutch bearings on 1800 engine other than that very good skis better than BRP

    I only blew up two outboards, both evinrudes. An 81’ 235 with over 1400 hours and a rebuilt 86’ 225 evininrude. I did buy a brand new out of the box 1993 200 merc that leaked around both head gaskets from day one, now that was a miserable experience! The best outboard I ever had was a 99’ 250 efi merc.

    I bought a brand new 250 sho in 2014. I had the making oil issues during my break In process and I followed the break in to the T. I always check the oil on my motors so after 1st day on the water I check the dipstick and it was a good inch over the top mark. I call the dealer they tell me to bring it in and all they did was drain the level to where it’s supposed to be which had me worried. I proceeded to break in the boat and after 10 hrs I still had the issue. I called Yamaha they told me to change the oil and switch to their full synthetic and run the piss out of the motor for a day and to let them know the results.changed the oil myself And I mean I ran it like a stole it. Since then I’ve never had a problem with the motor I still run it today it has over 620 hrs on it best motor I’ve ever owned by a mile. I never made past 250 hrs on a mercury without something breaking

    I read a fuck ton of threads on bass boat central and others and my conclusions on "making oil" is after the first 2 couple of hours on break in procedure to drive it a little harder than the book says. My f150 yamaha had 20 hours on it when I purchased an xpress demo boat. Got home, pulled the dipstick.and thought my gas tank.just vented. Oil was in the full hole so not overfilled but Damm close. After reading upon this I drove it like I stole it and hasn't made oil since. Winter time graphing for hours isn't good for the Makimg oil issue. Also sent my oil off to Blackstone labs for analysis. This was after an oil change but still Making a little and it n was in tolerance for gas to oil ratio. This may help and it may not but those 2 cents was free

    Wouldn't be surprised if you had to replace the piston rings to stop the making oil issue. Seems to be a ring seat issue, only way it's making oil is unburned fuel getting by the rings.

    From what I gather, the "making oil' issue is predominantly a result of short runs. Basically if you're not planning on running 15-20 miles......then don't start the motor. 🤷‍♂️ Launch at the opposite end of the lake from where you wanna fish 😁. Everybody loves a long boat ride..... right?
