The Good & the BAD of Netflix's Last Airbender

Фильм және анимация

As a big fan of the original Last Airbender series, I tried to keep as much of an open mind as possible when I heard Netflix was doing a live action version of it in 2024. Now that it's actually out, I wanted to vent some thoughts about it. Both in the good and bad departments.

One thing that struck me as odd was how deadly serious Ozai was when sending Zuko to find the Avatar. In the animated series, I got the impression everyone believed the Avatar died, and Ozai was sending him on a wild goose chase.

The biggest laugh Natflix's version gave me is by removing sexism they made Sokka seem more mature, reliable, and "perfect" while also making Katara seem weaker and less competent. Critical failure.

I noticed that too and in a funny way I believe it was episode 3 or 4 when saka tells her to grow up and hit 10 times harder than it did in the original because he seemed more mature we really didn't get that Sokka until after they visit the other ice tribe* auto Correct sucks

Honestly, the thing that frustrated me the most is how much they pacified Katara. She had a temper, she's overbearing and stubborn. live-action Katara barely emotes. In the full hour of the first episode, she smiles ONCE!

5:37 When he’s burning zuko he looks sad and is holding his sons hand which makes him seem sympathetic. Please show don’t make fire lord Ozai of all characters sympathetic.

Honestly, I’m not complaining about this adaptation because it’s a step up compared to the Unforgivable Movie back in 2010 and because the directors who worked on the Live Action Series ACTUALLY did their homework. Also good on them for referencing so many key characters and moments from the comics and the books! There were some key moments and scenes which I loved along with some the characters that I was excited to see in this series mainly Suki, Kyoshi, and I can’t believe I’m saying this but even Koh the Face Stealer as well. The addition of scenes like the Air Nation Genocide, Lu Ten’s Funeral, along with the scene set in the Fire Nation featuring Ozai and Azula really added a lot more for us fans who loved the series. The first watch of Episode 1 and 4 had me emotionally broken especially when it came to the family bonds with Aang and Gyatso along with Zuko and Iroh. There were also moments in the series that people complained about and I had to explain like for example, Avatar Roku since he was apparently “out of character” which is a bunch of bull and those people don’t know the backstories of Aang’s Past Lives. Roku gave Aang helpful advice while hinting on HIS past on how negotiations can lead to painful consequences and how friends can be a liability which basically tells us about Roku’s past friendship with Fire Lord Sozin and how that ended n up being his demise later on.

I personally enjoyed the Netflix take I see it more as a retelling, but I also wasn't that big of a fan of the original, I still like it mind you (I actually like Korra more...) and off course the original is far better than the Netflix show and there are some scenes, that I feel like should have been in the original mainly the one where Iroh visits Aang in the ship-jail, and Aang simply asks "why the war?" and the one where Zuko's crew, is the same one he saved from the original plan

I heard about this show for a while and always shelved it for some other time. The live action announcement was the reason I started watching and the first season into the animated series I’m blown away. It’s very good and look forward to continuing watching 😊

The LA series is alright, it's not perfect, but it's not terrible. Obviously it was going to be nearly impossible to include everything from the Cartoon, so personally I'll give them credit for including as much as they could, but not to the point where it was overwhelming. They did also chose some pretty good actors. However one thing that bugged me is that the whole purpose of Avatar was for Aang to learn the other elements and not once did we see Katara offer to teach him nor do we see Aang make an effort to learn. Then there's the obvious of certain things maybe even the whole series feeling kind of rushed. Like the whole romance thing with Sokka. Zuko's character was probably the one that was better written & I did like that with Azula we got to understand her future break down better because for me the way she broke down in the cartoon was confusing. At the very least I'd say it's definetly better than the first live action.

I know why people love the cartoon but like most Nick cartoons I thought it was just fine. The show I still respect for being one of the first serialized children cartoons. The remake feels so bad when the best parts: The characters, comedy, and bending are so watered down especially the water bending each scene looks like it was just someone splashing water. And the fact Aang never does water bending and the fact most of katara’s development in her skills is offscreen sucks.

It totally make sense why Sokka was in the Original that way. He was the only (older) male in this tribe and it was normal in they culture (like we saw in the northern tribe and Pakku). But not only that, Sokka had a smaller world view, because he lived in a SMALL tribe and his culture world.

My biggest concern with the live action is that they never established the main conflict of the series - that Aang has to master all 4 elements before Sozin’s comet. They should’ve made Kyoshi give Aang a vision of the comet instead of the water tribe being destroyed. One could argue that it’s just another story change, but this one’s a lot more detrimental than the rest, because no focus was put on Aang’s bending training in season 1, and now they’ll have to cram both water AND earth mastery into an already bloated storyline. It just felt like a “short-term reward, long-term consequences” sort of change that will seriously harm the future seasons.

I started out loving the adaptation then watch some more after finishing and my overall ranking is 7.5 out of 10 There are some changes that are brilliant like zuko's crew being the one he tried to prevent from going to a suicide mission And iroh visiting aang in the jail And that personally I liked but I know a lot of people don't is the one for bumi yeah he isn't the same and cartoon but honestly in the cartoon it always bothered me how much they ignored the fact he lived through the entirety of war and had to make hard choices and how he was burned out from it and didn't have a lot of hope it was way too unrealistic, and people complain about how he is bitter here and he has any right to be he lived 100 of war and as ruler had to make hard choices and then finding out that one of your childhood best friends is still alive a child who managed by accident skip through 100 years of war and keep his hopefulness and naivete along with him being the one who the world needed the most and wasn't there should make him angry and bitter. And how tactical genius sozin was making the whole world believe his going to attack the earth kingdom in order to divert their attention from only to attack the airbenders. And there changes that I don't like, such as the spirit world stuff aang not running away and only going on a flight to clear his head

9:40 I follow some people who got into one piece through the live action. They usually say the goofy art style and long length were a turn-off. The live action worked great as bait since some outsiders see it as a gag manga.

Netflix as a whole tends to flip flop and can't keep a good record of what it wants to succeed or just blow it up completely and this being one of them. Like Cowboy Bebop, not having or listening to the original creator is what kills this adaptation. If Oda never stepped in, his precious One Piece would have been completely f'ed up it would be probably another questionable Death Note. The fact that we are seeing certain characters way too early, and seeing some very bad changes on the characters we've come to love, just really puts me on the unsure of if I even really want this to have a 2nd or 3rd season. If Sokka isn't allowed to have his character's growth of respecting woman fighters, or destroying Bumi's leadership, think of how much they could change Toph alone. To me, I don't want this to continue. If Netflix can't respect the original source or the creator, then personally it should stop doing this adoption and find their own creative team crew to make original content.

remakes are not always bad. I put all the remakes I have seen on a tier list (unofficial) I ended up putting 30 in each Tier A,B, C, D, and F only S tier got only 10 and most of those 10 were the original versions not the remakes. The popular criticisms every one has for this don't bug me.

There really ARE a LOT of people who prefer Live Action over animation. well this evolved and got away from me but Im on to something personal experience 1902: A Trip to the Moon becomes the 1st book adapted in to a movie 1905 The Little Train Robbery becomes the 1st remake or maybe 1st parody of the 1903 hit movie 1938 : The Comic Strip Blondie is adapted to live action 1943: Batman is adapted to the big screen for the 1st time 1954: Dragnet becomes 1st TV series adapted in to a movie 1966: Batman becomes the 1st comic book movie on the big screen 1977: Hulk rages on to the TV screens 1978 Superman shows there is a market for super hero movies 1986: The Fly erases its 1958 predecessor from public memory and becomes the definitive version 1987: Masters of the Universe is adapted to film and while still cool, is massively disappointing. adventures in babysitting becomes the 1st on screen use of Thor (excluding the Hulk Fims but I never saw them) and its technically not even Thor just the 1st time I saw a Marvel comics hero in any thing. 1988: who framed roger rabbit starts a cartoon renaissance for both Disney and WB 1989 Batman becomes the 1st time comics are taken serious this grows a new fandom and kicks off B:TAS it aslo ruins the franchise and created Joel Schumacher The Wizard is not an adaptation of any thing despite the poster looking like "Pixels" but hypes us up for Super Mario 3 1990: teenage mutant ninja turtles becomes the 1st time many of us have seen a cartoon series adapted in to a movie (well, there was He-Man but this is the 1st time we pay attention and care) and check list culture starts We start going in to all movies to come after with a check list of charters and things we want to see adapted and EVERY detail NEDS to be accurate to get an approval Super Mario World comes out brining many fans in to the franchise , the existence of Yoshi is responsible for people thinking the story is all about Dinosaurs and it ruins both the cartoon and the movie 1992: Boris and Natasha: The Movie comes out adapting the cartoon to live action, it goes largely unnoticed 1994: Rosie O'Donell is cast in The Flintstones , we see the 1st case of people hating the movie because some one in the cast was wrong physically for the roll. The 1st use of "Best actor for the roll" is used 1996: The Nutty Professor invents fat suits and becomes the replacement for the Jery Lewis classic which never airs again and fades to obscurity 101 Dalmatians becomes the 1st Disney remake, its actually good. Dalmatian sales go up . People quickly learn the bread is not easy to take care of. Super Mario 64 comes out forever changing how we see and hear Mario and his friends erasing Super Show 1997 Leave It to Beaver becomes the 1st time I personally have ever seen a nostalgic series brought back for a movie with masive changes The Lost World: Jurassic Park cements CGI as a usable medium and erases lost world 1960 from re-air on TV. lost world 1960 also becomes the poster child for "Bad Practical effects and the sup[eriority of CGI. Final Fantasy 7 becomes the standard for video games and the 1st Final Fantasy and there for best for many fans. 2D Final Fantasy games ger erased from our minds the series NEVER makes a good movie and Netflix's Avatar TLA blows it out of the water with Chocobos 1999 Inspector Gadget adapts and fails to use the still living cast and becomes lame and starts the sin of Unmasking the masked character to show off the pretty face of the bug actor 2001 : The 1st Harry Potter movie comes out, people who never read the books finally see it. This happens again for LooTR 2004: X-men evolution Beats 97's X-men as THE version people love Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed an already bad movie gets a sequel the story by now is just self parody, the 1st time a beloved charter was utterly ruined and disrespected in a huge way. Even if you hated Scrappy he did not deserve to be a villain. Garfield: The Movie makes smart casting but very oddly ONLY does CGI cat. Next to real dog is a tragic mistake 2005: Batman Begins drew in fans who absolutely REFUSED to watch or Acknowledge Batman TAS. With the release of The Dark Knight, these same people refused to acknowledge Harley Quin as a charter and shipped Joker with Scarecrow. in 2016 with the release of Suicide Squad Harely Quin was suddenly an amazing charter and some one every one wanted to dress up as. 2006: Heros aires on TV for the 1st time ever very mainstream people are in to super heroes 2007: Transformers hits screens and draws in a new fandom who never saw the animated series Alvin and the Chipmunks makes people completely unaware of the cartoon series and they never bring it up the 1st example of characters being the wrong body type to make the story work and why it is vital to get characters correct. NOTHING can be changed. Underdog flops, live action talking animals suck 2008: The Spectacular Spider-Man beats FOX's Spiderman as "The Best and only Spider-Man" most people watch. Iron man starts the MCU, Sam Jackson may be a race swap and we may Miss the Brown hair with the white streak but we quickly DON'T care , his performance is still good. This is the 1st time Ironman is actually an interesting charter. Speed Racer hits and people can't see that its good. Poor box office ruins a Thundercats movie 2009: People who have never seen Sci-Fi before get pulled in to Star Trek X-Men Origins: Wolverine becomes the 1st time any one has seen Deadpool and they love the charter and don't get why fans are mad. Dragonball Evolution becomes the 1st movie so poorly botched that it is unforgivable. Check List culture mars this as the prime example of a movie done wrong 2011: After the public News released a story "Green Lanter is Gay" Referring to Alen Scott , people watching the Green Lantern movie expected Hal Jordon to be gay. Game of Thrones airs this same year, normal people discover Fantasy story telling Same year, Turnabout Storm places MLP in a Story with Ace Attorney creating New fans of BOTH franchises 2012: Arrow airs on CW tons of people who never saw Batman TAS watch there 1st ever DC hero series and love it. same year kicks off the MCU fandom with The Avengers. before this point people were in a sort of maybe state only NOW do many people finally join Same year TMNT hits Nick in CGI form , a bunch of people become fans and refuse to acknowledge any of the versions that came before and obsess over April Shipping. 2013 : Young Justice bring in new DC fans and they quit following DC and dismantle there channels when the series stops airing on TV 2014: Maleficent the 1st Disney Live Action Remake (of the ones we call live action remakes) the start of woke BS ruining movies, this very valid complaint was never racist or sexist it is an outrage that good films are ruined by attempts to be nicer, less scarry, less offensive, that we need to force politics in to stories. 2015 Star Wars: The Force Awakens becomes the 1st Star Wars for many fans pleasing girls and no one else Fantastic Four get a movie and people just forget the last two 1st time a black guy ruins a movie 2016: Pokémon Go comes out, people who have never been in the fandom get drawn in to the game 2017: Kong of Skull Island hits and people who never saw Kaju movies give Godzilla and King Kong a try 2018: Netflix airs She-Ra this becomes the definitive best , most talked about Masters of the Universe series people completely forget the 2002 He-Man series and reject the 2021 Kevin Smith version. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse brings many live action only fans in to loving animation and many people discover Spider-Man for the 1st time 2019: Fans who have never seen Star Wars before watch The Mandalorian Cats hits movies and CGI people animals scare children 2020: Trapped inside with no place to go and no sports to play, millions of very wealthy 20 year olds gain internet fame by watching Star Wars, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters and other classics for the 1st time reveling that they are also utterly clueless as to what films are and are not remakes. Dolittle marks the end of REAL animals being used in movies and its a tragi sad horror show 2024 Argylle continues to be sad and not use real animals other things happened too but Ive grown tiered of referencing dates.
