Great video! One good thing not mentioned. I have kids and don’t start any jobs until 9:30-10am so I get every morning with them. Also as I don’t need to wake up early if my kids are be difficult at night, all good as I don’t need to wake up at 5am. Other positive. I am now doing driveways only as they are highly profitable (but low volume). I make $750-$1000k per day but only work 1-2 days per week. I only have one machine. It’s super low stress doing driveways, easy to bid and customers are always happy to get a crappy driveway fixed. Jobs are always fixed cost and I average $150-$200/hr.

Just realized you have the same initials. J&M. And I do agree with a lot of what you said in your video. Mentally we get tired more than physically. And we can't grieve up. It lands on us. And if you don't have a solution. We go from making money to losing money.

On top of overhead don't forget taxes. Being self employed means you need to report your earnings and pay taxes. No one's going to do that for you unless you pay for an accountant. Sure cash jobs are king but you still need to report.

You don’t need to “pay” for an accountant there are multiple programs you can use that calculate your taxes. It’s not rocket science

I judt found your channel i loved this video. I'm a crane operator in the SF Bay area at a new renewable energy project on nightshift. I'm bringing home bank right now and I'm looking for a mini excavator to buy for small jobs during the day( i know sounds crazy to have 2 jobs but I'm able to sleep in my crane sometimes. I figure I'll buy a mini excavator now while I have the funds. I'm definately going to watch your videos. You and your wife sound like great people.

Great video, very informative! If I missed this I apologize but I'm wondering how you get your jobs? How do customers find you? Do you advertise on social media, yard signs, t-shirts, caps, radio etc.? What marketing technique do you find that works best for you?
Awesome bro

Great video man. Right now I've started renting my machines out as well because I can't find anyone to help reliably so I'm only able to take jobs I can do on my own. I'm not sure why nobody wants to work, I don't think the gov't programs pay that much but apparently it's enough to show up to work for a month and then never hear from them again. I'm way paying a guy fresh out of equipment school $40 an hour and he'd show up an hour late, some days just not at all and then just disappeared completely. I know he can't make that anywhere else around here with no experience but just didn't want to do anything. I thought I was good to work for, I don't think I ever got mad at him, I told him he was doing a great job on his actual work output and I bought lunch every day. I just don't get it. But now a machine makes me 200 a day instead of 1000, but better than sitting around I guess. 🤷

The no work ethic is not just a SoCa thing, same epidemic is happening in NW Oklahoma. Nobody wants to work, I guess they are making to much money sucking the gov't tit. Nice to see you and Gabriel making hands day in and day out, and Mo I know she works hard... And I understand the being the boss at the end of the day it all rolls down hill and guess who has to be there to catch it. You and Me. I once had a BIL and SIL say but you are your own boss you can take off when you want. haha We have to be there when nobody else shows up. Because at the end of the day well....see above...So where are you all going on vacation...is it a secret... well deserved and enjoy!
