This is the most impressive statistic in all of sports history. He has nearly 50% more points than #2 on the all time points list. Astonishing.

Here in Edmonton we have a road named after him (and Mark Messier). There are so many stories of how smart he was (which is expected for a guy currently holding 62 records). There was one famous story of a goalie playing against Gretzky, and whenever Gretzky came down the ice he would look into the glass behind the goalie. The goalie was really confused, he assumed there was a really hot babe behind him the stands. When he got a break he looked behind him into the glass. He didn't see any especially good-looking babe, but he saw himself in the reflection. He realized Gretzky was using the reflections in the glass to see the players behind him. Also note there is one player, Alexander Ovechkin, who is on his way to beat Gretzky's all-time goals in a few years, and nobody is more excited for that than Gretzky.

Mario also only played 170 games past the age of 31 and 570 games less than Gretzky overall. His GPG would go down naturally over time, as we saw when he retired the first time with 613 goals in 745 games (.822 GPG) versus the games he played from 2000-2001 through final retirement that dropped it to .754 GPG. People tend to forget that Gretzky had a better GPG than Lemieux at every significant goal milestone (100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600 and of course 700 and 800 which Mario never got to). Gretzky also had his own injuries which are pushed in the background because he accomplished so much and it’s hard to compare anything to cancer with a straight face. That being said, if he retired after his Oilers career, people would lose their minds projecting out his stats, awards, what ifs like they do for Orr and Lemieux. Still the best two players I’ve seen and also my two favorites.

Oh - and take away the good factor, and the legal checks to the head (I'm looking at YOU, Scott Stevens), and he's scoring the same amount today.

I think in 1992 when Lemieux was in his prime he missed 24 games during the regular season ( because of cancer ) at the end of the season he cameback and won the scoring title with 12 points more than Lafontaine with like I said 24 GAMES LESS. That year he had a ridiculous total of 160 POINTS in only 60 games while battling a cancer.

Some of his accomplishments include scoring 50 goals in 39 games on route to 92, notching 163 assists in a season, 4 times with over 200 points (nobody else has done it once with Lemieux coming close once with 199), hit 100 points by game 35 one year, has the record of 47 points in a playoffs including 17 goals, scored seven assists in a road game against the Quebec Nordiques as a rookie which was broken down into several individual records as they often are, had 137 points as a first year NHL player tying Marcel Dionne for the scoring lead but was denied the Calder trophy as rookie of the year because he played pro in the WHA the year before and denied the scoring title because Dionne had more goals. I'm going by memory so I apologize if my facts are a bit off.

Funny enough they gave him the most improved player of the year. From when he was 5 to 6 years old lol. Very nice guy too. Amazingly smart player. He was really the first to play backwards to go forward. Sort of like in checkers. Not only playing behind the net back out to the front but making passes and plays backwards to streaking players. Scoring 100 points in a season is like someone averaging 30+ points per game in an NBA season. Most years only one or two players break the 100 point barrier, and only by a few points, with the last few seasons being the exception. 100 points in a season is a rare thing, so to hit over 200 points in 4 seasons is absolutely insane. He broke 100 points 16 times, with most of them being above 150+. He also had 11 seasons where he had over 100 assists in a season, I don't think 100 assists in a season will ever happen again.

I've watched ALL of Gretzky's games from 1979 onwards and for the hockey fans who have never seen him play, you are missing out on what he did on the ice. His perception of the game was well beyond his years. If you've ever read his earliest autobiography, he had a comment in there that went he watched the games on Hockey Night in Canada his dad, Walter Gretzky, told him to NOT watch where the puck is and watch where the puck is going to end up. So that's why he was miles ahead of the game than anyone else. There are always stories that Gretz wasn't a fast skater but I can tell you for a fact that when Gretz had breakaways (some even from the center line) he was NEVER caught by another player. Go and see a video for 30 minutes on his goals and nobody catches him. I've been blessed in my era to watch the GOAT in both hockey and basketball. Thanks

I’m going to be honest here. His point record is the most safe record in pro sports. This man holds or shares 61 world records js. But I’m from Edmonton and we have a new killer. His name is Connor Mcdavid, you should check this guys videos out. He’s on another level. Trust me

To me Gretzky is the greatest team sports athlete of all time because h's so insanely far above every one of his peers. No one is even a close-ish second to his dominance. Yes Lemieux could have, maybe. But history is written.

Ovechkin may be getting close to the goal record, but there’s still a hall of fame career between him and Gretzky. That’s how far and away the great one is from everyone else.

He's really only the Jordan of Hockey in the sense that he's the goat, but his statistical profile is more like if you took all of Wilt Chamberlains single game and single season records and combined them with all of Lebron and Kareems career records. Just arguably the most dominant player in the history of team sports

Nobody will EVER be better than Gretzky, even with generational talents like Crosby, Ovechkin, McDavid coming into the league over the last 20 years nobody has ever been able to come close to what Gretzky accomplished, and nobody is going to break his all time points record in this day and age of the game it's just not happening.

I really hate to be the one to say this because absolutely nobody else will.... One thing we all need to remember is Gretzky Played in an Era where the Goalies were TOTAL TRASHBAGS He played in a leauge where Defence is what kept the goalies relevant A SHIT TON MORE BACK THAN than in todays leauge yes they do say A Goalie is only as good as the Defensive Pairing in Front of him but that was way more Significant back in those days.... Todays Goalies i totally think would give Gretzky Fits and his game would totally have to adapt. Just spitting the facts yall. But Respect to him for Dominating THAT ERA Of The Best Sport EVER PLAYED!!!!

Well, Martin Brodeur, Patrick Roy and Dominik Hasek all played then. I understand what you mean, though. Overall, the goalies had different playstyles that made it easier to score. The game was also much rougher back then, though.

as I said to someone else, if it was so easy to score, why is he the only one that scored 200 points? Why hasn't anyone else scored 50 in 50 since he did 50 in 39? Yes, the goaltending has improved, but players back then could basically cripple each other with headshots, drag each other with hooks and holds, and faced players who's only job was to fight guys on the opposing teams. It was different - but 99 still outperformed EVERYONE else in his era.

  • @Swoop187OG187

Yes, 50 goals in 39 games. Now keep in mind that today's top goal scorers struggle to score 50 goals in a season (82 games). Tho scoring has gone up recently - but still.

One point to your title: we don’t call Wayne Gretzky “the GOAT”-this term is reserved for athletes of Michael Jordan, Jerry Rice, or Sugar Ray Robinson’s stature. It implies comparison. Wayne Gretzky is called “The Great One.” 👍
