It wasn't quite real life but Donkey Kong Country looked better than any other game before it. This was a time before the Toy Story movie was released and before HD TVs. The visual impact of controlling a brilliantly animated 3D gorilla in a 2D platform game was jaw dropping.

For anyone that is confused by the "It looks like bread" decision, at the time it was a term to describe something that is bland (like a plain Jane). I remember people saying that a lot when I was a kid. And in America at that time he was right. You had to be here in America to understand fully. In the early 90's there was a lot of computer games still being sold, but thanks to the crash, they started to converge into multi (mostly bootleg) game "consoles". Piracy was getting really bad; not just for movies and old songs but games too. Don't forget the NES was seen as a toy at that time. In America at the time toddlers' toys were mostly similar looking to that of the Japanese version. This was also true for a lot of piracy "consoles". They were "shaved" down to look like toddlers' toys. So when he made it two times bigger and more rectangular, it sent out a clear message to the parent "This is not for toddlers and its legit". It made sense.

I’m wondering if when Walmart or toys r us demonstrated snes to the public back in the early nineties, we’re those particular versions different than the first prints we bought? I heard maybe the particular game they demoed maybe had some hidden beta levels that weren’t on the game you bought.

@@BlueMageWithSoulEdge so maybe the alternate extra stage was only able to be played one time only on super Mario world, then it got scrapped right after. It would make some sense since any others who found them don’t remember how they did it, there was never any proof of there existence on the internet to this day. So they must of been only accessible just once.

The late 80s and early 90s was a wonderful time to be a teenage gamer. It's where my gaming nostalgia burns brightest. As a Swedish kid I was at the epicentre of the Bergsala distribution stronghold. They had indeed a firm grip on the situation and Nintendo games were in abundance. I recall my own ecstatic joy as I, after slogging away at a summer job, had the epiphany that I could afford a Super Nintendo! Hitting the power-switch and playing Super Mario World for the first time was.... Heaven! Still is! Thank you for this lovely video! 🔥❤🔥

@@ZonicMirage I have the black GC with a black Game Boy player. I think making purple the default model for a long time probably damaged its sales. It doesn't look like something that should be under a TV. The Xbox was a giant, horrid looking thing too that a lot of people wouldn't want in their home. It looks like a 90s VHS machine that takes too many steroids and shouts mean things at its family. PS2 won by default on looks in that era. I saw an orange GC on a KZread video recently though. Orange isn't everyone's taste but I really liked it.

This was a time, when gaming evolved. But it is crucial, how various talents behind the scenes would cause a change in years to come. Seeing how the world looked at gaming, depending on the region, we all shared an experience. Enjoying games Plus the marketing was a trip. At the time, I did not own a SNES or Genesis. But did play a friend's console, and try some of their games. Years later, I finally get to play titles I missed out on back then. But to see other gamers experiences with either console, we all have our own stories. It is fantastic, how much accessibility we have in modern times. Also communicate what gaming means to us, and the games that took us on many adventures.

About Brazil there’s a point: when playtronics launched SNES officially, a massive number of consoles were already “imported” from Paraguay. There was a well known contraband supply chain bringing imported goods from there paying no taxes. A lot of NES/SNES counterfeit cartridges (using the same layout as Japanese SNES) came from there too, causing a “unlock” necessity in order to play this cheaper alternative to play games. I think SNES was available in Brazil as soon as it was sold in Japan. My SNES was playtronic version, mainly because I bought it in multiple instalments and it was really late (1995, I think).

Russia-my mother got to go to Spain in 1993-4 by great chance and got me a gameboy, but the only cartridge I've ever had was tertis. So mine was basically a very expensive brick game. One might afford the the system but not carts, since there was no piracy for the gameboy. Same thing with the SNES, people might get the system but they had like 2-3 carts. One could buy pirate dendy or sega carts from some Uncle Vasily's stall, play the game and bring it back to exchange for another one. Though the steepler's TV show that promoted those dendy's carried the SNES too showing off snes games, those were dreams. Only some rich-ass bandit's kid could get them. Brazil I bet-same. And then came the playstations and the pc's, both highly pirateable: done.

Loved the design of the UK Snes. The US one was too blocky. The Nes picked up in the 90’s in Europe, after the micros had already shot their bolt. Even so, the Nes was the biggest 8 but seller in Europe at the end of its run. In the very early days of the Nes it wasn’t just available in Boots, I had one of the first ones and got it and games in Makro. People forget what Boots was, it used to be the premier superstore in towns and sold everything, all computer games. It normally held the largest foot space in most towns.

Well Mr top hat you brought up stuff that I've heard quite a few people bring up Yakuza I've heard quite a lot of interesting stories but no one's ever actually put it all into one major video I think you might be the man to do it from the interesting pirating that happened in China to the Yakuza in general some of the stuff they did to threats and apparent kidnappings I'd love to see if you can do a deep dive I can't do it I'm already dealing with Canon films that's enough corruption for me

Loved the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, because Game Boy aficionados could play the Game Boy games on your TV through the use of the Super Game Boy. That same method would later be utilized on the Nintendo GameCube though the Game Boy Player.

Is the slight amount of reverb in your voice a nod to the SNES audio? If so, bravo, and someone call Joe from Game Sack!

Snes put me in gaming nirvana for a little while. Super Mario World. SF2. Link to the Past. FF3. Chrono Trigger. DKC. Was soo cool for about 4 years.

I like the look of the SNES in the USA it made it look advanced and powerful. However.. I was a Sega loyalist growing up but was still tempted by the advanced graphics, style and look of the SNES. If it looked like the other version I feel like I would have been less tempted , bc it didnt look like bread but looks weak and more like a gray plastic kids toy ..

Factual error: Nintendo of Europe has never had control over Nintendo's operations in Australia & New Zealand. Mattel Australia and Nintendo had a separate contractural relationship from Mattel in the UK & Italy, which lasted from 1987 to 1993. Nintendo Australia aswell, is not part and never has been part of NoE, and reports directly to Japan like Nintendo's Taiwanese and Hong Kong subsidiaries.

I changed from Megadrive to SNES in December 92, and the reason behind that was Street Fighter 2, that being said I only think I rented that game as due to the extortionate cost (over £125 in todays money). I did prefer the more polished look and build of the console, the MD looked plasticky and the pad was creaky. The MODE 7 graphics were super impressive to but I think I ended up going back to the mega drive once the Mega CD got a release date (that thing was a financial mistake of mine)

For all of you kids who are too young to remember, the console war between the SNES and the Sega Genesis was like me trying to choose between your mom and your aunt.

I remember after tv school program they had a sweepstake. Anytime an object or something pop up you have to call this number. I had that phone number on redial. But unfortunately I was able to win one but my cousins had one 🤣🤣🤣

I remember Bombuzal being one of the 20 free games that came with my mate's Atari ST. I was really surprised when I found out that that rather boring puzzle game was going to be an early release for the Super Famicom.

Never liked the USA design, where did purple and lavender come from?! The shape is ok, but you would have thought red buttons like the Nintendo logo and NES buttons. I’ve never found out why they went for purple!

Thanks for the video!! I live in Canada (Western Canada), and it always floors me that Genesis outsold the Super Nintendo at any time. Nobody I knew growing up had a Sega Genesis, but most of my friends had Super Nintendos. I searched online and couldn't find any information at all about hardware sales exclusive to Canada, but I would be shocked if the Genesis outsold the Super Nintendo in Canada. Does anyone have data to support my belief?
