Iarla Ó Lionáird gives some background to Casadh an tSúgáin / The Twisting of the Hayrope.
"One of my favorite songs from the folk world in the 1970s is Micheal O Domhnaill’s rendition of Casadh an tSúgáin. Paradoxically I never really sang it myself until quite recently - although Micheál was the first person to record me in a studio (Trend studios, in Dublin) many years ago.
Casadh an tSúgain / TheTwisting of The Hayrope is a whimsical love story told in the usual shy and playful manner that characterizes many Irish folksongs when approaching the subject of love. Boy meets girl, calls around to her house only to be met by her rather protective mother who cleverly asks him to twist a hayrope (which by the way were used for many a thing in 19th-century Ireland, though usually to fashion a seat for chairs- hence the phrase Súgan Chair).
In his efforts to cooperate with the girl's mother, the young suitor compliantly twists the hayrope but in doing so finds that as it lengthens he is once again outside the door whereupon it is summarily shut in his face by the ever expedient matriarch."
The Gloaming '2' tracklist:
The Pilgrim's Song
Fáinleog
The Hare
Oisín’s Song
The Booley House
Repeal the Union
Casadh an tSúgáin
The Rolling Wave
Cucanandy
Mrs Dwyer
Slán le Máighe
The Old Favourite

My grandparents raised me. My parents had to work hard, and they did good by doing it. I'm a Newfoundlander, and most of us are Irish - including myself. My grandfather used to sing this to me to put me to sleep. Only because of him do I know every word of this by heart. His father was taught by his grandfather, and in return, his great-grandfather taught his grandfather who taught his father who then taught his son. Many memories of going to Mass Sunday mornings after falling asleep to this tune. Indeed I had him sing it to me a week before he died - when I was thirteen. On his deathbed, myself and my mother sang it to him in return. This was his favourite song along with " Fiddler's Green "

I'm a Spanish girl. The north of Spain, specially Galicia - the area where I live - , has Celtic ancestry. We have bagpipes and our own language, the Galician. When I listen this, I feel something special, I feel like it was part of me. We have a word in Galicia called "morriña". This word means feeling of sadness due to be away from your land and the people that you love...and I think that this song represents perfect what is "morriña".

Andrea, in A Coruña, is the Tower of Hercules and in front of it is a statue of Celtic King Breogan, Irish legend says his sons climbed to the top of the tower and saw a distant green island. They set sail and founded the Irish race. Whether it is true or not is not really important there is a connection and that is what matters.

As I listen to this wonderful song from County Cork here in Wales, where I have lived since 1960, I feel that I have to thank the policy of the Irish governments during my schooldays (1944 - 1956) who made Irish compulsory during all those years. Yes indeed, they forced it down my throat and I hated it then. Now, however, I am so thankful that I still have the Irish I once hated and am now - at 80 years of age - able to enjoy this great traditional song!

Song name. The Twisting Of The Rope. A nice girl met me in the loneliness of the beach On the bend of the green forest in the wee hours of the morning These are the words that she said to me, quiet and wan: “The world is in bed, so let us prepare a white blanket!” (chorus) And if you’re with me, be with me, love of my heart, And if you’re with me, be with me at my house’s threshold, If you’re with me, every inch of your heart will be with me, It gives me a thousand regrets that you won’t be with me Sunday as my wife Oh awhile ago I was a hearty, quick, light little boy And awhile ago I was, and I would play cards with women Oh awhile ago I was, and I’d play five or three Until his woman did make my heart go thump-thump Chorus And oh God of miracles, what drove me to this land, In red cloaks, far from my Gaelic friends? Oh, I went into where my love was, my lifelong love, And her old woman put me out, twisting the rope Chorus

Irish music is where music originated from, the harp is everything of our civilization came from the harp, the harp is the covenant between god and man, with all the information and knowledge that is planet earth, you cant build a thing without using the harp, it has the two images from left to right mans intellect and reason, first four strings is earth wind fire and water, mans intellect and reason, and the 5 senses, the Ogham language is the first structured language of mankind, the first string of the harp and the Ogham stick are used to create a sundial a compass and a wheel, turn the harp upside down its a sundial, represents the sun the moon beams, both control the cycles of life and grow our food, teaching you that you are the sovereign, its the very meaning of our sovereignty, and in my country in this day and age It is a de facto Provisional Government construct given a Legal title under the Crown . This is why the Irish People are being Evicted from there homes in the 21st Century by Sheriffs and the Bar [ British Accredited Registry ] court system . It is only a Legal system Not a Lawful system . Michael D Higgins is the current President of the Royal Oireachtas. All Political Parties both old and new are both are subject and servant to this Oireachtas , designed to render the Sovereign Irish People redundant by imposing unlawful Taxes and Penal-ties through there Legal system in order to boost [ Exchequer ] Figures for the Chancellor of the exchequer in London .We have asked them to vacate the [ royal ] Oireachtas De Facto Provisional Government , its British Bar Courts Sheriffs and Bailiffs and Restore a Sovereign Legitimate De Jure Republic , representative of all the People of éire. Ireland has never been at peace.

Words can't describe how emotional and warming this song is. This has become one of my favourite pieces to listen to. Described by many that the girl most likely a personification of Ireland a deep story of home sickness. Featured in my favourite film Brooklyn. I am homesick for Ireland and I am not Irish. I miss Ireland. I only went to West Cork for 1 week last year and I miss Ireland so much. When I took the coach from Schull to Cork City for my flight I cried most of the way back to Cork City for leaving this place and it stole my heart. I have since learnt to sing this song from phonetics and an Irish friend said I did a good job with it, I know I make mistakes but I am trying to learn better ways to sing this song.

I'm from Tir Na Nog meself. Never been either although I like the music too. Hope you get your passport issues sorted. Its probably the English to blame. In my case I've sold my soul to the fair folk. That's holding my application up a good bit. And the new EU border issues with paperwork are a blast eh!? Paying a bloody fortune to stable the Unicorn at border controls . Just not enough Vets to do the paper work. Fuckin usual shambles.

As a basque, this song breaks my heart every time. The pain of having to leave your homeland behind is one hard to describe, and so many of my people had to flee the country because they were getting imprisoned and masacred for simply existing. They banned our language, our culture, our history... It hurts to think so many left this beautiful green land never to return, and it hurts even more to think it wasn't that long ago. I hope I never have to leave this place.

Standing in the midst of a field, the hills jut forth to the heavens. The cold rush of the wind, carrying voices of the past through me; lifting me upwards towards the lush green covered hills ahead of me. Storm clouds roll through as if time has been sped up. They cast their shadows upon the old abbey's stone walls. They seem to stop where Ireland's past heroes rest, in their eternal slumber. Mist in the air, dew on my face, music of the tin pan and fiddle rush through my head; as if my ancestors say welcome home lad, welcome home. written by myself John Dyson

The sand-dunes are a dark, rain-swept green, against a clouded sky, alive with the calling of seabirds. An old man, lifting bags off of a wooden boat on a beach, looks off into the pale horizon momentarily, and then gets back to work. Once done, he hoists the bags into a sack over his shoulder, and heads towards the distant village.
