The Girl I Left Behind Me - British Army Song
Музыка
"The Girl I Left Behind", also known as "The Girl I Left Behind Me", is an English folk song dating back to the Elizabethan era. It is said to have been played when soldiers left for war or a naval vessel set sail. According to other sources the song originated in 1758 when English Admirals Hawke and Rodney were observing the French fleet. The first printed text of the song appeared in Dublin in 1791. A popular tune with several variations, "The Girl I Left Behind Me", may have been imported into America around 1650 as 'Brighton Camp', of which a copy dating from around 1796 resides in the Bodleian Library, Oxford.

This has to be my favourite rendition of this song. This one sounds like something you'd actually hear in the army camps.

It’s at the 18th century marching pace (similar to modern British slow march pace) so it’s easy to picture a line of redcoats marching to it.

Strange to think that it's an English folk song yet this version is very Irish in its lyrics; is that because this is the lyric variation that was found in Dublin? Lovely though.

Gabagool is might be correct Spailpín Fánach was borrowed for this songs tune en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Girl_I_Left_Behind While it's difficult to track down a reliable source for the tune it doesn't mean the melody doesn't predate The Girl.

I have a theory that this version is actually meant to be sung by a "wild goose". Hence the inability to return to Ireland free.

"Erin" is one of the female personifications of Ireland, along with Hibernia. It's simply a poetic way of saying "Ireland".

It’s at the marching tempo used when soldiers fought in lines. Easier to keep alignment which was paramount in battle.
