My cat is 17 years old, too. For unknown reasons, her favourite place is a box from a matress store, I'd bought over a year or so. I tried to replace it with other boxes, but there's no chance she would leave. I wonder how long this box could last, before I have to buy another matress...

That's what I was thinking too... I had a cat that would not play with any toys unless it had my scent on it. So I would have to rub the new toy all over me every time I brought in a new toy. That's probably what is going on here too. He recognizes the scent that's on that box while the other boxes have these unfamiliar weird scents to them. Of course, he would rather go back to the box that he knows the scents to it

We call that a cardboard lounger. My cat adjusted her box to her exact specifications by taking tiny bite size pieces out of it. Its a work in process.

That first box came from "Home". He is keeping the one item that came from his last house with all it's smells and oders. Smart kitty.

My sister has cats that love boxes. They will pick out boxes and sleep in them for a few weeks and then they are done with them. Bring in new boxes and they go through the same process all over again. Maybe it is like how some people love that new car smell and have to have a new car all of the time. 😂

I noticed all the boxes you tried giving him are wider & shorter. The fact that his box is taller and narrow might make a difference. See if you can find a box with similar dimensions to his. Until then, you're décor looks great!

It most likely has the smell of something that he loves from the previous home.

I have the same thing with a chair. My old computer chair was very uncomfortable to sit at, you could even feel the screws. But my cat still likes that chair more than the new one, so I had to keep it xD She really likes to sit and sleep in it

Man I could feel that purr though my headset - what a happy fluffball!

I would build a wooden frame around this box, so it looks good and stays intact, and he has his security blanket.

His shredded box is like a well-worn pair of jeans - so comfortable!

How adorable and he is beautiful. Looks like he is nostalgic for his former home. So cute.♥

Calvin is like a kid: you give the kid so many toys to play with, yet they want the box that the toys came in instead (or bubble wrap, if they’re like my sister, who tends to go that route) 😂😂😻😻

He's an artist, he redecorated all the interior himself, that box is a piece of art!

It's like Frasier's dad's chair.

My sister had an old wicker chair my Tuxedo shredded little by little till there was just the iron frame and seat. We let him do it because it made him happy and kept him busy!

The other boxes were too shallow - i bet he likes slim tall boxes, that way hes covered in all sides, yet its still cozy small spot.

This is looking like a little kid hanging on to a special blanket even though we try to get him a nicer looking one.

Looking at it, I could see why he likes the box. It got good height and blocks out light. He purposely set it up so he can walk in through one of the corners and still partial see what's happening outside. Nice and cozy Side suggestion you can put the box inside the cage so the cardboard pieces won't be scattered everywhere.

He is such a unique one~ "Enjoy your time in the box~"🤗

Calvin just REALLY appreciates the "lived in look" when choosing a home.

He made THAT specific box his happy place home ....my 9 yo cat did same with her last Chewy box shed made her nest from old apartment. Tried all new Chewy identical auto delivery boxes.....nope. She makes a new nest though with the new Chewy paper!!! It's the "old apartment" comfort smell❤️

Cats like to feel safe and secure… they love the feeling of being inside something that envelops them on all sides… I made little "houses" for my kitties… I took boxes I got from Amazon and then I put a t-shirt over it to create a cave like environment for them… each one has old blankets in them and they love those things…

Omg, I hate to say that I kinda see the appeal of Calvin's old box ... at least compared to the other boxes. It's well seasoned. That perfect kind o' soft ... and even a tad bit artistic 😂. Home'y. Like that old ugly and worn chair that everybody gravitates to. You know, the one that sinks to your body perfectly? 😊 And it can't be created or duplicated by anyone else! It's unfolds perfectly only by your butt or body (or paws😊). Ok Calvin, I got you!

Reminds me of the dad’s ugly chair in the tv show Frazier. It was duct taped together and he didn’t want to get rid of it when he moved into his son’s fancy professionally decorated place. It was just comfier!

You can just say it’s his sculpture when people come over lol! It reminds me of my rooster Henry. Every time I put fresh bedding in his house he has to go “redecorate” for his girlfriends! He will take the bedding and move it around until it’s just how he likes it.

Put some of his fallen-off strands or tufts of fur in one of the newer boxes. See if that affects his disinterest in them!

It took a lot of work to get his box this way. Most cats seem to like enclosed cubbies. The new boxes you offered didn't bring him the same comfort. That is why he resorts back to the scratched up box.

Calvin is adorable. There are many memorable smells on that box...animals are very sensitive. He's happy in his cardboard shredded castle. ❤️😺

The reason he may be in love with HIS box so much, is the fact that it has a lid, a cover, kinda like he has his own (man) cave. LOL!! TOO cute!!!

I'm sure all those clawed holes let him look out at all sorts of angles while he is mostly hidden away inside that old box. Letting him feel safe & snug while also able to peak through those holes to see what is going on without the need to poke his head out. Everything a cat needs for a great resting place! :)

“As crumpled as it may be, there’s no place like home!”

I love animals and grew up on a farm with many. When I graduated from school I moved to the big city and eventually lived in a beautiful home that I liked to keep immaculate. When the first stray cat tried to move in, I resisted as we traveled quite a bit and the thought of our home filled with litter boxes, cat beds and scratching posts was too much for me. So my husband built a beautiful, insulated wooden cat house complete with sheepskin, heat lamp and foyer to keep the wind out, so she could live on our deck and be warm, fed and loved. Needless to say (to those who know cats), she was the first of 5 stray and/or feral cats that said 'no!' to the cat house, and have thus moved in with us where they have the finest of nesting spots and a choice of 3 floors to nest on. Still, they have all had trouble resisting a good old-fashioned cardboard box to tatter up!

I wish he could talk! Cats are funny critters, he looks so cute in it, I’m glad you have it there for him.

This reminds me of the sit-com Frasier. Fraser’s dad had an old reclining chair in bad shape and it drove Frasier crazy because the apartment was so fine. The difference is you are kind and clever to let Calvin keep his old ‘home’. Wonderful story.

Scent is everything, especially when you move. Do you have enough different kinds of scratching posts at your new place?? It looks like he's doing his best to try to leave his scent on something that smelled familiar to him before.

I understand why he continues in his box : he has something over him, he can hide. Not one of the other places where you offer him to sleep have hidingplaces, they are all open flat spaces.

Shredded to puurrrfection! 😻 Its his unsightly binky. Thank you for not throwing it out. You're a very good mom.

You could find a box very similar to put his comfy box inside it so you can have something that looks better and gets to keep his comfy box.

My cat Buddy claimed the box that my computer case came in. That box stayed in my living room for years, until after he passed away. It was kinda hard to finally put that box in the recycling. RIP buddy, you were the best.

I know what she is going through because my cat is obsessed with snow and igloos and I don't know what to do when spring comes along melts her 2 story igloo!!!! I guess make her a wood house😻 Thanks for sharing this wonderful story ❤️

I have an idea: build her an igloo out of wood and next time it snows cover it in snow, she’ll get inside none-the-wiser and by the time the snow melts her igloo will still be there and it’ll be okay because it’ll already be _her_ igloo cos of her scent 😊😊😊

I guess I could build around it and add more rooms. She has 3 and a half rooms now and I hoping to add more rooms and levels if the weather holds up for making it happen. That shredded box has got all of his scent or pheromones, and that's where he found his comfort. When I was a child, I used to get mad at my mama for washing my favorite stuffed animal without my knowledge because then it would smell different from me. It now smells like detergent and fabcon (aka weird foreign smell). I'm guessing it's kinda the same thing for the cat 🥰

Cats are going to sleep where they're going to sleep! You can spend hundreds of dollars on houses and beds and they'll pick a crummy box any day of the week. Right now one of my tabbies has commandeered a box from chewy. Way too big but he'll get bored with it.

You are such a great Mom to let your fur baby have the thing that gives him comfort, no matter how it makes your living room look.

If you want to change it out at some point, close the lids on another box, leaving one flap open so he has to climb through a hole to get inside. Put a familiar blanket for him in it, too. He likes cozy enclosed spaces... not those open boxes. Was he abandoned as a kitten? Sometimes they like enclised spaces because it is comfy like being in their mother's womb.

This pet mom is awesome!! She feels her pets happiness is more important then looks. His obsession is not hurting anyone, causing health issues, making hazardous material, or causing anything else that would be an actual problem. It’s a simple box that (like she said) may not look the best but it makes him happy and comfortable. Though I would continue to place his box inside a short box for stability and (hopefully) keep cardboard shreds contained.

My cat did the exact same thing and she would hit me, if i changed the box. And she let her anger out im that thing so that thing looked way worse than this. But hey... the queen gets what the queen wants or you will suffer. But we love them anyway :D

I have a sassy girl too. Her name is Lemur. She smacks us all regularly. She spotted a black widow that probably would have killed our little dog. She also had a close call with getting stepped on. So she gets a pass on all naughty behavior and if it really gets out if hand a short time out . Mostly it just makes us laugh how feisty she is. I love how understanding you are with your Queen. I wish everyone was like you it just bothers me to see fur babies strictly punished. They are just themselves and deserved to be cherished. Hope your Queen is doing well and staying onry!

Maybe put the shredded pieces of this box in the new boxes, for scent transfer.
