The Geysirs of the Haukadalur Geothermal Area (Geysir Strokkur) - Island/Iceland

English:
Strokkur (Icelandic for "churn") is a fountain geyser in the geothermal area beside the Hvítá River in Iceland in the southwest part of the country, east of Reykjavík. It is one of Iceland's most famous geysers, erupting about every 8-10 minutes, 15 - 20 m high, sometimes up to 40 m high.
Strokkur is part of Haukadalur geothermal area, where are located various other geothermal features: mud pools, fumaroles, algal deposits, and other geysers beside and around it, such as Geysir.

I've been here twice now, once fifteen years ago, and again in early December last year. The first time, I was on the Golden Circle tour, having gone to Iceland in mid February. I suspect we stopped here much longer than we should have, watching Strokkur erupt multiple times, and, as a result, had to miss a stop at Hveragerdi ( my laptop doesn't let me use proper Icelandic letters!) We were almost the only people there that time, and I'm not sure why because the weather was clear, bright, and there was almost no wind blowing. Strokkur put on a magnificent show for us, including a number of double eruptions similar to the one in this video. Skip forward in time to last December, and everything was different, except for the clear and sunny day. It was bitterly cold and there was strong wind blowing from the north, that made everything seem much colder. Nor was it the wind's only effect. The whole area was busy with people, despite the cold and sheets of ice all over the place that made footing treacherous even for able bodied and sure-footed people. There was lots of people around Strokkur, which was roped off so getting a good view meant pushing past folk. Not that it was worth it, for the cold meant there was a lot of steam rising from Strokkur that obscured the activity, and that steady wind meant the plume of steam and hot water that erupted was blown horizontally along the ground. I did not stay long this time, having hired a car to get around and not have to follow any schedule. And Hveragerdi? This time, I'd got a hotel room booked in the town, and was staying there. That's how I learned that the plumes of steam I'd seen going past first time around were from hot springs geysers and so on, some of which I visited whilst staying in town... and which gave a better show than their more famous relative this time. I intend to visit Iceland at least once more in this life, and this time I will go to Hveragerdi and Storri Geyset, and this time, I will hopefully get to see all the hot springs and geysers I have before, along with those I didn't!
