The Genius Behind Backpacking's Most Popular Tents!

Durston Gear has become a household name with the release of the X-Mid trekking pole tent and recently with the Kakawa series of backpacks. I sit down with Dan Durston in this video podcast interview to pull back the curtain on Dan's design philosophy and some of the nerdy details on how Durston Gear creates their products.

    The way Dan has broke through is amazing, I’m in England and last month when I hiked the West Highland Way in Scotland I couldn’t believe how many Durston tents I saw, from original 1 to the pro 2plus. My 2 solid didn’t feel like the rare beast it has on other hikes. Great idea to do this interview, nicely done. On my tent I’ve added short guys to all the available bottom tie outs and decent length ones on 4of the mid fly points. Take 16 stakes of various designs and can say the tent fully storm pitched can take a proper British beating on exposed hill tops.

    I think the X-Dome will be that solution. It is freestanding, so not the same. Dan is really good at taking user feedback and figuring out solutions. I would think at some point you see a 1P, 1 door/vestibule tent in the line up. Also, the Tarptent Dipole is a really good option that has a much smaller footprint size.

    @@BackcountryExposure Definitely looking forward to seeing what the X-Dome ends up looking like, but I prefer trekking pole tents usually. I’d be interested in 1 door/1vestibule, but only if that decreased the footprint size. The 1.5 inner sounds pretty cool though… The Dipole looks pretty sweet too and I considered buying that before, but can’t remember what stopped me. The footprint doesn’t seem that much smaller though and I really hate that I have to seam seal it myself. I’ve had some tricky pitches, but so far I have not had to bail on a campsite because my tent footprint was too big, so the large footprint is probably not as big of a problem as I think it is Lol

    @@jmax850 They really should lol And that’s good to know. I recall seeing that on their website now that I think about it. I duno, looks like an awesome tent, but I’d still like something even smaller just for certain trips where I know spots are tight. I tried the Sierra Designs High Route and the size was great, but I just wasn’t really happy with it when comparing it to my X Mid and the silnylon fly was a deal breaker for me. I think I’m just being way too picky at this point, but I’d just like to see what comes out of Dan’s brain lol Maybe he can come out with a “skinny” fly for the X Mid, so you can basically do the skinny pitch without having extra flaps flapping around. That would honestly be perfect! 🤔

    it's because bigger names in the industry, despite the budget, are too ignorant what's really needed/not needed, don't care. or slow to react. So when enlightened (not to be confused with quilts lol) hikers come across someone who listens to customers and puts a lot of thought in the designs, they like it. Btw, interesting that the poles/straps are getting some backlash...I was one of those that asked him about it, and likely would have purchased them, if they had it (I know he's adding them later, or new version)...so even though my current Gossamer poles don't have it and Im fine with it 99% of the time, the times when I need it, like when I do a short scramble section and I need to use my hands, they would be helpful to just hang them on my wrist and free up my hands.So I ended up buying Fizan poles for 1/3 of the price...but I may still buy his later...

    Fly only is best because its interchangeable. No insert, mesh insert and solid insert options. Dan only needs to release his pro 2 fly without the inner. I can't wait for this to exist. My biggest reason for interchangeable inserts is if the insert gets worn it can be replaced instead of buying a whole new tent and same for the fly. Normally my only option is to buy used and that can be a gamble sometimes.

  • @TheNewGreenIsBlue

    @TheNewGreenIsBlue

    17 күн бұрын

    Yeah, in some ways it seems like a better option overall to have interchangeability and you benefit from economies of scale, and it becomes a selling point. I'm curious how much weight you're actually saving going with a one-wall design on the DCF versions anyhow. I realize that adding some weight might you might lose the "lightest tent" in the world marketing terms... but what you'd gain in flexibility can't be understated. You're effectively then buying a tent system.... that you could mix and match. From a marketing perspective it's smart as well, as your customer base is more "sticky" a little like buying into the Apple Ecosystem. It works best you buy into the ecosystem.

    @@El-Jefe They share an offset ridgeline but also have a lot of fundamental differences. The High Route has the poles along the perimeter, which means mandatory guylines and flat wind catching walls. The X-Mid makes the tent wider, and then rotates the interior onto a diagonal, so it has both a diagonal ridgeline and opposite diagonal floor (the first tent to do this). This 'double diagonal' floorplan is unique and allows the poles and peaks to also be moved inwards for a more wind shedding shape, and this combo creates handy vestibules in the two corners while the HR has just narrow strips for vestibules. The HR is a nice tent, but the X-Mid solves the main downsides of lack of vestibules, mandatory guylines, and flat sidewalls. Certainly there is a resemblance, but I don't think the HR already did what the X-Mid does.

    Maybe saying the textile industry is fascinating was a bit too far. This was a great interview with two gear nerds.

    But it is! Or... rather it can be. It reminds me of the glass industry in 2006... Neglected and uninteresting until Steve Jobs decided to put Corning's Gorilla glass on a phone and it became a major focus. The research being done in technical fabric is fascinating... even if some of it is really a product of good marketing.
