I love the quilt! I'm glad you repaired an old quilt. They're usually not as precise as most made today. Back then they didn't have rotary blades, quilting rulers and unlimited access to quilting information. They also mainly cooked from scratch, no microwaves, air fryers, etc. Also no robot vacuums and many other modern conveniences. I have a quilt my grandmother made and I need to do the same thing to it. Thank you for taking your time and sharing with us. 🇺🇸

I really love the oldies! So thrilled you made it useable. My grandma made quilts for cover but she made them as pretty as possible. Finished is good. Just be careful washing . I love the slightly puckered look to a washed quilt.

Have some fabric like your binding; leftover from my days of making Raggedy Anns. I have a quilt that my grandma made in the 1940s which needs 2 pcs replaced. After watching this video, I have decided to applique them over the original pcs; they are 2" sq. The transformation from damaged to nice is wonderful. Keep making these videos ... love them.

I had to do one a number of years ago for one of the Captains at our Sheriff's Dept. It was from her grandmother done in the 20's/30's fabrics & solids. Fortunately I was able to the those solids easily. I had to repair several scrappy sqs that were worn/torn. I got that done but while I was doing that I decided to take those old scraps I cut away & tucked them inside of the quilt so the original sqs were still in that quilt. The Captain was giving it to her only child. When I had it finished I took it to work early & asked the Sheriff's assistant to open her office. I spread it on her chair & needless to say there were tears at work that day & it was so gratifying.

Really enchanting! I’ve got a 1930s yo-yo quilt that I literally rescued from the side of the highway. I really tried to find the owner, reaching out to quilting guilds snd shops, as well as posting on Facebook and Twitter. In the end, I did some tiny repairs, and now it has pride of place on my home.

Just a hint: Havel’s Ultra Pro Seam Ripper and Buttonhole Cutter. It will fly through the tiny/close stitches in a flash! My go-to ripper. Beautiful job you did. Isn’t fixing or mending pleasant? I just finished replacing the soles on my husband’s slippers with some denim scraps. I’m glad I never throw anything out. But…I wish I had rethought that because I could have done some strip piecing or something neat like that. Oh well. Next time I will go through your videos and find a flashy way to patch my next project. Thanks Kris for your terrific videos. Gail K.

Beautiful job, Kris. Me, I wouldn't have spend as much time, would have done the same on the sides and used those to patch, but would have appliqued the squares on top and used a zig zag stitch on the patches. Otherwise, it looks like a new quilt. Thank you for restoring such a vintage quilt, which now looks more modern. Thank you so much for sharing. Again very informative in showing how to restore in difference ways those vintage quilts.

Thank you very much! It is hard to decide how to repair or reuse these old quilts and with each one being so different, there is never a one-size-fits-all technique. I love the idea of repairing with the zig zag stitch! Great idea. I have seen a few done this way, but I haven't tried it myself yet. I am sure I will someday soon. I just decorate for fall this past weekend and put this quilt out on our couch. Love it! i agree--the back is vintage-looking, almost like a 1960s mod print. So happy I am not the only one addicted to repairing these old quilts! LOL! It is so satisfying!

I’ve repaired and finished quite a few antique quilts, I feel the time to make the seams all go the same ways is wasted time. After quilting can’t even tell. I longarm them and no problem if seams are a little thick

It is so tricky to give advice like that since each quilt is different. I would start slow with the most gentle process first, like soaking it in a tub with Retro Clean (you can buy this) or even just plan water. But before you get it wet, make sure to secure any holes first. That's how I would start. If it is in fairly good shape, you could try the washing machine, but I would be careful doing that as a first step. I hope this helps!

Many years ago, I was at an estate sale and this quilt was in a garbage can. I asked the person running the sale if I could have it. She said it is a mess and if I wanted it, it was mine, but it was trash. I made a video last November where I deconstructed the quilt and rescued the top. I finally repaired and finished it. I am in love with it now! It is definitely from the 1970s. Love the prints!

Didja ever notice that if something is poorly made, you can't take it apart? This observation is based on years of alterations work and home remodeling

Isn't that the truth! This was a real bugger to get apart, but it did hold it together, so I guess that's good! LOL! We are currently remodeling and are running into the some of the same issues I run into with some of these old quilts--I never compared the two until I read your comment! SOOOO true! Thank you!
