"We're not gonna be laughing if the house goes over!" I love this. Totally Aussie with the signature larakin attitude. Video rocked!

This is hands-down the best video ever captured of a non-tornadic severe thunderstorm ! This simply boggles my mind.
Glad, I live in San Francisco...! My sister in QLD just shared your video with me. I must say, I did enjoy some of those QLD storms though while I was there!
Living through this up in the hills of The Gap was not fun. Dad was stuck outside taking shelter under the cars and Mum was screaming out the back door for him, but the wind was pushing her back inside. My sister and I were huddled at the fireplace praying, convinced it was all over. Our eight-year-old sister was next door, we had no way to get in touch and were hoping she didn't try to walk home when it got scary. Our brother was riding his bike somewhere. Eventually it was over, windows were smashed, the shed was gone (flew over the house) and trees were down everywhere, taking out everything in their path. I still have trauma reactions to storms when they start to get rough.
Definitely a HP supercell.. There was a triple point setup that day.. quite rare in Australia and more a sort of thing you see in the plains states in the USA. I chase storms a lot and have never seen a day here in Australia with a setup like that.. Very unstable atmosphere with STRONG divergence near the triple point. The Gold Coast Hinterland copped it early afternoon with a very severe storm ripping through Canungra and Tamborine before a second storm smashed through the west of Brisbane.
Best micro burst footage ever!!! Well done and thanks for sharing it
I first saw this video when i lived in nsw when it happened. Just stumbled across this video and i now live within a 5 minute drive of the gap! On the day of the storm i was in brisi. Im sure theres an old comment from back then if you want to know more haha
4 years on, still the best storm footage captured of any storms intensity, not even this weekends Brisbane storms surpass it,Must have watched it 30 times, well done guys.
OMFG - That was awesome. I live further down towards Jimboomba & can't believe how much that storm intensified before it got there. No wonder there was so much damage - that was incredible.
Some of the most incredible footage I've ever seen. Thanks for posting.
This is one of the most impressive thunderstorm videos I have ever seen. I have probably only seen one or two hurricane videos in my life with rain that thick.
Absolutely amazing footage! Thanks so much for upping.
Thanks for showing this. I am so scared of storms as i think it is one of my worst fears with spiders. :)
That is a truly amazing video. I grew up in The Gap and Mum still lives there - thankfully her house was untouched. I went to The Gap High and the damage there is quite incredible too - and I now understand why! Thanks for posting and keep it on the Web - easily the best account there is!
That is AMAZING!!! Thanks so much for sharing.
Well done, this is one of the best videos I have seen of this storm.
The best video I've seen on KZread! Incredible Footage! ABSOLUTELY EPIC! I can't believe it's Brisbane. I drive though the Gap all the time on visits to Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious and have thought about buying future property there. To see devastation like this, IN BRISBANE, Is absolutely incomprehensible. Reports of Funnel clouds (Possible Tornado?!?) were common though the storm. This SUPERCELL THUNDERSTORM will remain one of the most damaging, destructive and impressive in Australia's History.
I live just a couple of streets away from you (Swale St) and this is just what it was like at our place. I have told my friends to check this video to see what it was like for us too. Excellent work staying on the verandah for that long!
We Australians, have strong foundation. Our homes are strong, our economy is strong, and our people are strong. We Australians, always help each other. I have no surprise if these blokes so relax watching the storm from their backyard, because we know that we always have a full support from the government, army, and the people, in case we need help. I'm Indonesian ethnically; I’ve been living in Australia for 15 years and become Australia’s citizen. I’m so proud with my adopted country.
can u believe we were only a few burbs away sittin down to an early dinner on the balcony at the same time. our apartment was just facing the right way etc so just copped the mist and awesome show. FANTASTIC VIDEO tho.. thanks!!!
Thanks so much for the video! I'm from The Gap but am living in the UK at the moment where this kind of stuff isn't important enough to report on. My parent's place just off Payne Road has been ripped apart pretty badly but at least they can live in the part of it that hasn't been destroyed. I wish I was there to help with the cleanup but I'm so glad I wasn't there for that storm!!
Well done for capturing this. I remember The Gap Storm well from Plucks Road Arana Hills. Could see the white sheet of rain coming over the gully. We were lucky but of course others in Arana Hills were not so.
Wow, great footage! I miss being in SE Qld and experiencing these amazing storms (hail, high winds, and having to wait on the side of the road until it's over if in the car at the time.)
Well done, that's awesome. Can't believe how strong those winds were.
I love how you guys stayed so calm during this video. I was living in Kelvin Grove at the time and I was scared that the winds were gonna send a tree through our windows. I look back at my own videos of the after math electrical storm but I always have to watch yours first. :)

Aussies are larakins. This is just how we roll. Immigrants might get freaked out by this kind of weather. Born and bred Aussies just look at it and start cracking jokes.
Dude!!.. I was the shift leader for the BCC that day and to this day it remains as the 1 scariest moment in my life.. We were based on level 15 of brisbane Square in the City and saw the storm destroying The Gap and then it turned its fury towards us... Mate lets hope for all of us that it was a once in a life time event as I NEVER want to relive that storm and its aftermath!!
the guys who posted it already said that. It was a massive supercell thunderstorm/possible tornado. Funnels were sighted. I've never seen anything like it, AMAZING vision, it would have been terrifying. Awesome work guys, thanks so much for posting it.
This is so Australian. The images, the voice over. I love it. Thanks for uploading.

what an amazing microburst! have studied this mesocomplex a little and the non-tornadic wind gusts were just amazing!
HOLY CRAP!! I lived in The Gap up until 2 months ago!! I've seen all the photos on facbeook.. I wish I was back there to help clean up.
Absolutely crazy! Fanatastic footage, thanks for posting.
Footage is amazing - nice job. This storm was impressive. I only caught the rain part driving back from the gold coast, and didn't realise how much damage had been done til I visited family out on the northside. bring on this storm season :D
top notch dude. best vid of a cyclone ive seen. good job buddy. two thumbs up......
I thought i new what a bad storm was until i saw THAT!!!!!! I'm no expert but that wind would have had to be in excess of 160km/h. Unbelievable footage and you guys were so calm through it!!
being from Kansas, I'm pretty insulated when it comes to thunderstorms, etc., but this is just jaw-dropping. What a storm.
I was in this storm. The tornado was right over our house at Killerea Crescent. I think we were the only house in the neighbourhood that didn't lose our roof, because we had a window open.
The thing I love about the tropical storms that hit Queensland is the sudden hit. Beautiful sunny calm day and then bang, here it is.
This is now the top result on Google! I was trying to remember what year this happened and typed "The gap hailstorm". I'd forgotten about this video but it clicked when I saw the username. It's Troy by the way, if my own username didn't give it away.
Wouldn't surprise me if that's a tornado, epic footage 👍
now that should be one of the things you get with your three park super pass! looks like the most fun you can have in australia haha, i love storms.
Excellent footage! Was our Wedding day you know. 11 years this Saturday🎉
beatifull i love storms
Yeah I agree with you there, it'd be awesome to witness it first-hand but cmon.. surely there are bigger storms than this.
Absolutely incredible video of the power of a very powerful HP supercell ... winds in that video are clearly reaching over 100 MPH in the middle of that video (160 km and greater).
great footage man right once it kicked in to the strongest point I was blown away
I lived in Bellata St from 66 to 81. I saw what they called Cyclones during that time...but I don't think I ever saw anything like this...WOW!
absolutely stunning
thanks for posting, I live on Weemala St, but overseas till next week.........
Yes, I was there. A cyclone is a cyclone and a tornado is a tornado. This was a freak storm, nothing more than that. Full stop.
Geez...Wish you could send some of that water down our way. (Victoria) Absolutely the best vid of a Tropical Storm. 5 Stars
My parents house was damaged back in the two 1985 storms, particularly the first one which had giant hail stones which pierced the hose and smashed the concrete steps. This time the hail wasn't big enough to break the tiles but the wind blew them all out of position. We weren't actually getting wet most of the time while i was filming as we had our backs to the house brick wall and were standing under the deck roof. Of course the wind/hail etc all went much longer but i cut all the segments down

Incredible... what strong... never i see something that!!!
I miss brisbane because of epic storms like this, and also the bike tracks it is such a great city to be active in.
search for 'brisbane cyclone' or 'brisbane severe thunderstorm'. There are dozens of videos of this indredible storm, but this is among the most impressive.
wow i'll take your word for it as i wasn't up north for larry. but i was there for this one and believe me i haven't seen anything like it b4!
Man I Can Watch That All Day
That was a great video. Such a typical Queenslander response to terrible weather.
we were leaving and returning to the deck often to attend to the problems occuring inside. I know swale st. I used walk down it on the way to primary school, at hilder road. We can now see hilder road school from dads house for the first time in 20 years because of all the tree shredding which took place.
You are right, i am a weather geek, but i'm pretty sure that you were the inspiration on the BCF comercial where the guy stays up all night slaying dragons with his mouse and calling himself "Sword of justice". Wow mate, you certainly "Slayed" me hahaha
I grew up in the gap and never have i seen anything like this. Best vid ever, some other vids seems to show the hale preceeding the intense winds. I can't believe how it has changed the suburb. it's unrecognisable in places. It will be a long time before the gap is restored to it's leafy self!
I've done some investigating.... for the USA folks... the peak winds were just over 100mph and the rain dropped was 6.5 inches in 15 friggin minutes. That is 26 inches per hour in intensity.... MIND BOGGLING!
so crazy when this happen in person, it was like the most crazy hardcore wet and wild ride, or like being on a ship in a crazy storm - the waves
Holy shit! Mother nature at it's best....and worst! I live in Brisbane and will never forget that storm. I love storms :)
Awesome footage fellas, well done!
i don’t think i’ve ever seen vision of rain/wind that intense ever...was there ever a recorded wind speed

H3AVYHAUL3R official of 185km/h but my personal recorded 230km/h but I do live on raised land.
My goodness this is incredible hope u guys are alright. Incredible storm.
Wow! That wall of rain looked like some vacuum was put on reverse to spit out a shitload of water and debris! Best wishes to all those living in Queensland!
Phenomenal footage!
Top video Lads. I remember that day well.... Very nasty!!!
Wow! Glad you guys didn't get blown away! I'm glad I don't live too close to the coast (the coast of Alabama that is lol). Cyclones/hurricanes don't look like fun. We usually get the tornadoes from the hurricanes that hit the coast where I live in the states. Love how ya added, "Escape the next Brisbane storm by going on vacation" at the end LOL xD
for the record, that's pretty much what I saw from my back door over at arana hills. my cat was out in the storm too!
That is the most powerful thunderstorm I have seen on youtube. Looked just like a hurricane.
This is impressive. I could see it coming in from several suburbs away, but by the time it got to me, it had weakened. I like how you are laughing when it looks like it could blow the house away! And your mate going "aw, oohh" is funny.
My brother lives nearby this location, I can't imangine what he went through that afternoon, WOW!
Looks like the storm let go a massive downburst from about 1:30 onwards. A good downburst can have the same damaging potential as a tornado.
That is insane, we came back threw the gap a few hours before the storm hit, lucky we did you guys got a pounding and its continued all week hope the 1 that is supposed to be coming today dosn't get you guys again awsome footage but
Wow! That is extremely strong winds! Were there any tornadoes like this one in Dunoon on my channel?
This same storm hit the Bunya/Albany Creek area (10 - 15km north) not long after this. We had about 60mm of rain in 10 minutes. The winds were just as strong but hail wasn't a big factor.
I was living there when the storm hit. My garage sloped uphill and the water was still over a ft deep @ the far end, 40m from the door. Cars wrecked, trees thrown all over the roads, massive flooding. A workmate of mine was in bed and his daughter came in and said "Daddy, my room's gone." The storm then removed the main bedroom too, only 2 mins after they managed to get their kids and hide in the bathroom. It LOOKS cool for sure, but for some people it wasn't if you were there. Freaky ...
I think the winds were 150 to 170 km per hour from the reports I've heard and read through thru various news sources online.
that is the most amazing storm footage!!!!
ive seen 1000s of videos with amazing footage of severe storms from trees blowing over to lightnight striking 1m away, but i have never seen anything as amazing as this! I live in maleny 500m above sea level, and an hour north of brisbane, i captured some footage of this storm and it looked bad!! but i never ever expected it to be like this! Never forget that day :) i only wish we got the storm full on like that.. (in maleny the storms either die down or go around us) :(
btw the bureau of meteorology confirms that the winds reached speeds of about 180 kph
Thats unreal man, cheers
Well it is the Gap, right between mountains........ It amazing we only get this happening rarely.
there was damage to the house. several rows of tiles broke their tie wires and were blown out of place. From then on, it was raining through both levels inside the house.
I was working at Brisbane Airport that day. It was frightening.
It wasn't a micro burst either, it was caused by the landscape of the gap converging the winds and concentrating their power. A micro burst is an un sustained pressure system caused by variant temp/press between atmosphere and storm land fall. This was sustained and it hit more than the gap, I assure you
Gosh, it looks more like a tornado than a run of the mill Brissy summer storm. I've never seen white out from rain before - that's incredible. No wonder the damage was as bad as it was.
Unreal!! My brother sent me the link, he lives in Wakerley, how far is that from the Gap?
2:05. We're not going to be laughing if the house blows over!! PRICELESS!!!! To think I've moving from the UK to Brissy next year too :)
(in aviation) a microburst is a sudden, strong, but short term downdraft - caused by rapid cooling of the air under the cloud. It can happen in a thunderstorm or even just under dense cloud (and virga) on a humid day, but that wasn't a just a microburst (and anyone flying in that would not be around to tell about it today)
I was home alone during the storm. It was INSANE!
O.o Damn. I thought Hurricane Isabel over here in the States was bad. But now i realize that storm was nothing compared to this!
This wasn't a cyclone, it was a severe thunderstorm - two totally different things. This was not a category 2 cyclone, it may have had winds at speeds of a category 2 cyclone, but it was NOT a cyclone.
Whoa awesome footage
it was awesome! i was in chermside for this one. it wasn't as bad there but it was still one heck of a wall of water! i was at a shopping center and a shopping trolly in the rooftop was blown so hard by the wind that it dinted 2 cars. it only traveled about 20m
Great video Guys. I live at Sinnamon Park which is probably, as the crow fly's 10-12 klms and we got nothing like that...Great video.
Hot, sticky day and then it suddenly turned to night...and we were just finishing LUNCH at a local cafe. We got home just as the storm hit. A day to remember..especially for my poor Mum-in-law who was visiting.
location in The Gap is in the first 5 seconds of the video. we know it is a thunder storm. we're just talking it up.
