I think Carson Palmer's year in '02, when they crushed Notre Dame 44-13, his senior year, after beating UCLA 52-21 that prior weekend is what started the Dynasty, because nobody wanted USC that year towards the end of the season. Unfortunately, the consolation prize was crushing Iowa 38-17 in the Orange Bowl, and to think the Big-10 thought they had a chance that year to win, oh and BTW Iowa scored like 14 pts. late when all the backsups were in...but late '02 started the dynasty! If the Playotfs were then SC had a chance to win it all that year!!

Indeed. People forget about that year as they dropped two games they shouldn't have. It sucks because it was always one or two games that cost USC a bid at a championship. That triple overtime loss to CAL and that game to UCLA in 06 and that game against Oregon State in 08. 2006 may have been a tough one against Florida. But I def think that 08 team could've beaten the gators.

Alabama still plays a cup cake schedule. They play one decent team at the beginning of the season. Then they play teams like New Mexico State in their other non conference games. And then when it's time to play conference opponents they're playing Texas A&M, Mississippi State, ole miss, Arkansas, etc. That's until they play LSU and auburn (which are like their only tough conference opponents). They don't see Georgia or Florida until the SEC championship. Out of 12 regular season games Alabama will play like 3 ranked teams. Most of which are ranked between #10-25. 4 if you count the SEC championship. So by the time they get to the playoffs they're usually a lot more healthy than the other teams.

That was arguably USC's best defense during the Pete Carroll years - fast, aggressive and addicted to getting turnovers. USC had a basic, but very successful strategy for winning - Defense gets turnovers for a short field. Create mismatches on offense. The key to all of that was overall team speed. Their practices were at game level intensity so that when they came to play games, they were already conditioned for it. I've watched a lot of insider videos of Pete Carroll's Trojans. I've never seen a bunch of guys having so much fun. Pete's motto at the end of the 2002 season was, "We'll play anyone, anytime, anywhere." They were definitely the Honey Badgers of college football in those days. That's why other teams didn't want to play them.
