How sad it must have been when you couldn't share a selfie at the beach bar or watch a football game real time. I just got off a cruise to Antarctica. A year ago I would have been off grid until I returned to Ushuaia Argentina. But I was posting pictures and videos live and watching KZread and Netflix. It worked flawlessly. 6 flat dishes was enough for everyone. Brilliant.

Something I never mention in this video was how the old system never covered the polar regions. It was in my old videos though on the subject. Amazing that it’s now the same down there are everywhere else!

We arrived in Martinique on Friday after an Atlantic crossing. We had Starlink fitted just before we left. We did have to reset the system twice but apart from that it was great. Never had internet on a crossing before and to be able to Skype my wife was so good.

StarLink has made a gigantic difference in Wyoming. When your ranch is 50 miles away from the nearest hard wired internet connection, and the geosynchronous satellite, is expensive, with poor bandwidth. Starlink is transformational. Upwards of 200 mbps at a fraction of the cost.

At the recent Antigua Yacht Show, there were so many StarLink equipped superyachts in the same space, that they “ate” all the bandwidth of the StarLink system, and each vessel was reducer to 1-2 mbit speed. Its like when too many cellphones all try to use the same Tower, at a sporting event or newyears, there is not enough capacity for all. As more and more yachts get StarLink, and they all go to the same places in the Med or Caribbean, the problem will grow. I Think yacht hotspots will have to invest in 5G landbased networke, and yachts will have to get secondary 5G nets to backup/supplement the StarLink systems

Presumably there will be more satellites soon. Starlink is nowhere close to their final total nor done upgrading as satellites are replaced. Given their size and low orbits I'm not sure they last all that long. But it's all rich people problems to me. Won't cry for the guy who has to buy 5G repeaters or deal with low bandwidth from the comfort of his superyacht salon.

I went to an event a few years back & saw a trailer with a mobile phone tower parked out front. I laughed at first but when 50,000 people turned up I realized just what effect it can have on a network. New system, same problems. Elon will work it out & just the right price (for him)

5G has health questions around it and additionally it hates water vapour. It is short range and expensive. Not a good match for yachting compared to bandwidth improvements in Starlink.

Yeah that’s going to happen, luckily for yachts when it’s needed most (owner onboard) they most likely will not be huddled together like that.

Thank you for your explanation of the need for TVs and Internet on yachts - and for answering my comment. Always good to hear a side of yachting we may not think about. It's why I watch your channel in preference to the others.

Back in the 80's my dad had a business providing the movies for the crews entertainment. 16mm films, usually 3 reels to a movie/case, and 3 movies in a can. I got to deliver many of these cans to commercial ships. It then moved into the 1/2 inch video tapes, beta, and then VHS tapes. It is a little bit different now.

I spent my career in the SATCOM industry. Back in the day, say mid 80s, the latency was almost 3 whole seconds! 🙂 Starlink is certainly changing the game.

I remember phoning home from the Falkland Islands in mid nineties and the latency was like that, at the time we said it was 5 seconds. Horrendous.

@@eSysmanSuperYachts 5 seconds is certainly possible depending on the location and footprint of the satellite used. Sometimes 2 or even 3 SATLINKS may be required to connect the callers. Those were the days! :)

I did an Indian Ocean crossing August-October on a Cat with Starlink. I was the only one onboard without access, owner is a bit of a DB but I didn't care because I am not slave to the internet. I actually like being offline for weeks, onshore I am just too bored. Anyway it seemed to perform fairly well but there were lots of dropped connections as they were streaming music often and it seemed nearly every three or four songs at best. This was a single antenna installation but I heard, and seen one, the large yachts were running up to 4. It looks interesting but lets see how long before the party line becomes just that, a crowded shared bandwidth. Am sure there will be premium service with more dedicated access limits for the extra $$$ but still loads cheaper than VSAT/Iridium/Inmarsat.

My inlaws were just in antartica and their small cruise ship had starlink. We were doing facetime with no issues, and my father in law was able to use a vpn and watch his football game with pretty good quality on his laptop. Kind of crazy to think of that capability in virtually the remotest part of the planet.

When you first started talking about Starlink months or whatever back, I looked into the residential service...especially thinking of my days in living in Alaska and even still, in the scheme of things internet connectivity is somewhat limited by one-two suppliers. And, now as you hear about various countries at war absolutely depending on Starlink. Definitely a weird shift in power that not even Austin Powers could have foreseen. Just creatively trying to think like a gillionaire S/Y owner....is there a certain bravado and upmanship with other S/Y owners about how big or how many of their VSAT antennas? They really have been a major component of the S/Y's "mast" design and construction. Let alone the direct sun heat issues you addressed on a previous video that had all the VSAT antennas painted black. So, moving forward in S/Y design and construction, these Starlink antennas probably help the future designs much more minimally. I wonder if the VSAT sales guys are like....crap, no more commissions for us! 😂

For many years I had show control equipment on a whole lot of cruise ships. Every so often something would break, and take a theater down in the middle of a cruise. Most ships had backup hardware and someone knowledgeable that could make a swap, so it didn't affect the passengers. But sometimes, such as a show changeover or major failure, they would have to get an expert from the home office on board. And sometimes they would have questions for me. It was normal that they could send one email a day to me, and get back one response, that they usually got the next day. That was all the bandwidth that a major cruise ship had available. No phones, just very limited email.

Switching from one monopoly to another

Your content and video's are excellent.

I was one of the Beta testers for Starlink... and immediately started using it on my MY.. It's been great and continually gets better as more satellites go up.. Originally I was limited to my geographic cell, but that changed with the mobile version. I've got a KVH/Direct tv system onboard, but dropped the Direct Subsciption soon after Starlink.. just no need for it... I stream everything now, and I'm told, although I haven't done it, I can use Starlink in a telephony mode.

Very informative and well put together ..... I never knew that bandwith was so poor on a SY ..... It is almost as bad as telling the crew to wind the rubber band tighter so you could watch a movie. lol

Just did a test on my satellite wifi system.182 down 21 up 28 latency. Starlink is amazing. Yes, a game changer for maritime.

Being in Titusville, FL we see SpaceX launches all the time. The night time launches are the best as the sky really lights up. Nothing like the rumble of the massive engines lifting off.

I got my pilots licence at Titusville late 90's shuttle launches and landings were awesome, one day the instructor called up NASA to ask if we could fly a bit closer and they allowed us to fly alongside the runway with a just landed shuttle still on the runway. I guess those days are gone now.

We've had Starlink for more than two years here in country Australia. It has changed our lives, literally. Working from home is reliable and fast. Compared to ADSL which is useless, particularly when trees keep knocking the cable out and 4G with it's max 2Mbits. Also unreliable with power cuts.

Game changer indeed! Not only do yachts stand to benefit from this, recreation vehicles (motorhomes, caravans, etc.) can also get Starlink so being connected in the middle of the woods or desert is possible. Developing countries....such as the Philippines which has had to rely on very spotty or slow internet connections....now has access to Starlink in most areas of the country which is opening a whole new world of possibilities.

You might mention that yacht designers in the near future will be able to disregard those big ugly balloons on top for a sleeker look. Always an excellent vid.

Enjoyed the review, thank you. How these StarLink systems will be implemented on consumer cruise ships will be interesting to follow. Next year I’ll be spending two months on one ship (LA-Alaska-Japan-SE Asia-Indonesia-Australia-New Zealand) and then a few months later a month on a different cruise line’s ship (New Zealand-Hawaii-LA). I suspect that profits, margins and ROI will be the first deciding parameters for cruise lines adding StarLink… until StarLink service being available to cruise passengers becomes more common and then it might be a competitive perk (albeit still an added cost to passengers and another profit line item for the cruise lines).

I watch a KZread channel of a lovely couple who RV full-time, including to very remote places in Alaska. They rave about having Starlink on their RV.

I currently have family members on a world cruise that are in phone contact daily via whatsapp. Incredible clarity.

Wikipedia says 4423 Starlink sattelites are operational as of 7 November 2023 and they had launched over 5500 of them. That's crazy. They were telling people they made 6 sats a day in 2020. It really is fast work how it's all come together.

That was very interesting. In truth, it was something I never gave a second thought to, given all those sat systems on the big yachts.

You made a video about these astronomic vsat prices a while ago. Good thing times have changed.

I was (and still am) pretty impressed with the speed of dial up internet. I was happy to have a connection. I still use my aol email :) My 300 baud modem is still in my closet with my Apple II+ 🥰

Have used Starlink nearshore and will be using it offshore this summer. Hope they make a DC-powered version, but even if we need an inverter it will be worth it. It is indeed a game changer even for small vessels.

Really is a big deal. I got a commercial Starlink system for one of my remote business locations and it was about a 5 minute project to have very fast internet. Comcast the local provider with no service in the area would have charged $80K to run fiber to the facility.

YaY, Yacht Starlink!

As an ex Network engineer and now Cyber Security person, I would be in contact with your home ISP. Fiber should generally be in 1-20ms pending your ISP isn't over saturated. I have a 1GbE connection and my latency is 1ms. Starlink is absolutely game changing, have a lot of friends who live in remote areas who are now connected online.

Maybe they should introduce a system where tracking via starlink can't be turned off.

I can only dream of owning a super yacht ..... but if i did, I would leave the internet behind 😊

2 years ago when I said my starlink was WAY Better than what was being used on yachts- You laughed at me -

Competition will eventually bring down prices to a fraction of what Starlink charges now. People that don’t work on yachts have no idea the amount of down time there is without owners or clients onboard.

A definite game changer. It will be interesting to see how the pricing goes in a few years. The satellite system is not cheap to maintain. I heard one engineer state that they only last five years and have to be replaced. The issue I have heard is when you have a lot of yachts in the same general vicinity, the speeds drop significantly. Wonder how service is in Arctic region. Great video though.

Of course, I am going to want TV on my M/Y, I am going to need the noise distraction while I am mining all the on-board couch cushions to continue paying for said yacht. (:

The rule of thumb for fiber optic latency with high optical quality fiber is 1ms per 100km. That is if you have a straight cable run with no back reflection at any splices or connectors. That is just simple physics, lasers running at the speed of light through the optical coefficient of the medium (in this case high quality fiber). With TCP each packet is sent and then a reply packet confirming the receipt comes back before the next is sent. So max throughput for a single threaded conversation is simple math of 1 second divided by the latency times the size of the packets.

I've had starlink for two years now. I live on the US/CA border in a very remote area with the closest city over 200 miles away. My speeds average 100mbs up, 7-10 down and latency between 15 and 20ms. I wonder why your friend on the ship was getting such different speeds?

Am a bit amazed that super yachts are only discovering this now. As I am writing this we are in an anchorage off the coast of an island in Greece and we have internet via Starlink. We have it now for over 1 year on board and would not want to do without it. Normally we have around 300 Mbps download and around 25 - 30 Mbps upload, more than enough for us. Have to admit we don't do Atlantic crossings, but the majority of the mega and super yachts we see in the Med spend most of the time along the coast, in a quiet anchorage and most of the time there is no cell phone connection, so another source of internet is required. Starlink is the way to go in this case.

It's only been available fully for the last 12 months, so the video would have been premature to be made earlier. Yachts have been very quick to install the new equipment.

Great video. I figured you were going to say Starlink. Back 60-100 years ago, they envisioned incorrectly that we would have near limitless energy. I guess it make sense in retrospect. Energy capability in the preceding 100 years was massive, so wouldn't it continue. Well, yes, but not at the same pace. Instead information and connectivity went insane. So much so, that it was really not even imaginable by even the great science fiction writers of the day. We may not be able to take vacations to mars, but we do have phones and powerful computers in our pocket that can connect across the globe.

I'm at 501 down and 504 up and I wouldn't want it any slower.

I wonder how much this will change QOL for commercial sailors as well, assuming owners are willing to foot the bill for the equipment and service.

Excellent overview. I agree that VSat is doomed due to the differences in performance and cost. It makes sense to buy the 2 Starlink antennas for $5 K but can you do a video recommending the cell and wifi systems you would integrate with starlink to minimize costs given a typical 2 season schedule in Europe and the Caribbean and US East Coast with 2 ocean crossings. Most owners do not really need $5k per month for coastal cruising when cheaper cell service is available using a Pepwave antenna integrated with routers and sources. Would you still recommend a Plex or Kaleidoscope system to reduce streaming demand. Thanks for your advice.

A note if you have a good IT guy you can link multiple Starlink terminals to increase speeds

That would be pretty straightforward with the equipment already onboard any superyacht.

We often forget the dates all these changes happen. I can tell you for sailboats. In December 2022 I agreed to crew a yacht sailing out of Vietnam the next spring. At that time I had Starlink on my boat back in California but Starlink was selling a $2000/month plan, so if you went faster than 8 mph Starlink would stop working. So we all had the RV plan. I told the boat owners I'd like to bring by Starlink to try out. They said, maybe in the future, but not this trip. In February sailing KZreadrs seemed to be trying out Starlink. My friends still said, yeah nah. End of March I arrived in Vietnam with my Starlink. Videos were popping up on KZread raving about how well it was working. End of the month we were still waiting to cast off from Nha Trang.... Vietnam said you can't bring any radio into the country, so I figured Starlink was out of the question... but we plugged it in. Worked brilliantly. Used it all the way across the Pacific. I think it was February/ March 2023 when it started to be widely used mid ocean. It's a brilliant system that was part of my decision to go sailing, but I thought it wouldn't be available for a few more years. One of the first things we did with it was another crew did a live video call to his family back in Oregon (who live in the country so they were also using Starlink.) Latency is almost unnoticeable. I would suggest if you're agreeing to a second date to warn the other person in advance that you're using Starlink and there's some latency. Otherwise an overly sensitive person might think you're hesitant. But that's it. Phone calls in the middle of the North Pacific to anywhere else. And maybe the big yachts will have the $2000 dishes, everyone I've ever met just uses the $600-700 Dishy - no problem. And instead of hour long downloads of barebones GRB files for weather, we had full Predict Wind and regular chart updates. Terrific utility.

One thing worth mentioning (not a problem for most people) but I think there is a latitude limit on Starlink if you're heading to the polar regions.

There are starlink sats in polar orbits, but the coverage is more limited. thankfully there's not so much demand at those high lats so it still works out.

I.could maybe be there at 16 years old when I crossed them. An justice after crossed street too with an motorbike accident 3 years ago. World can't say I done anything on studies to reach the sky one day. Many australian big yachts in 90' at Côte d'Azur. I never try to be in one of them.

Let's see how many fit on a yacht. You know they will want multiple.

I follow MY Loon and they are (or have at this point) removed the old satellite "balls" completely. They haven't had Starlink cut out once according to their channel in about a year. Fascinating stuff! The tech in those dishes is just leaps and bounds above the competition!

One thing I think you have wrong is the number of satellites in the Star link constellation yes they have a licence for I think 32,000 but even if it is the 40,000 you quoted they no longer need that many, They are now launching the V2 mini a much larger and heavier satellite that is 3 or 4 times as capable the drawback is that they can only launch 22 or 23 on a Falcon 9 as opposed to the 50 plus V1. However this still is a net increase in capacity for under half the satellites, In 2024 they will be using full size V2 or a new V3 launched from star ship these will be even more capable again reducing the number of satellites required. Now this could all be rubbish because although the logic and numbers are sound if the demand for Star link is so much higher than originally projected they will have those 40,000 except each one will be 5 or 6 times as capable. Note for those of you who play around with stocks If Star link goes public its profitability is heavily tied to Starship since it can put ten times as many satellites into orbit for less than half the price

When not moving, for winter etc, I put it on 40 a month

When Starship is operational, the much bigget and more capable new generation Starlink satellites will come online, which will speed things up and ease the bandwidth bottlenecks. Fancy playing a low latency online game at Point Nemo 😎

Kymeta corporation has had satellite internet available for yachts for over 5 years, extremely affordable (both install and monthly) starting at 20Mbs to over 100Mbs. This is well known within the industry and I'm honestly shocked you are unaware of them.

We are aware of Kymeta. We did a video about their flat panel antenna in 2018 Monaco Yacht Show. However their systems haven’t had the same impact on the industry the way Starlink has. In fact I personally haven’t seen any yachts with their antennas installed. Pretty much every yacht has installed Starlink since it went live in the last 12 months or so.

You said "The internet is here, life will never be the same." True but perhaps the sky will never look the same either. It's been estimated that when Starlink have the full 40,000 satellites (leaving aside the congestion at low levels), there might be more of Elon's craft visible in the sky than stars. And what if a competitor decides to do the same thing with yet more? We're losing something precious are we not?
