A warm welcome to the channel Northworthy Sagas and Stories. We're a storytelling and history channel hosted by Vikings/Anglo Saxons Bragi, Egil, and Tyrkir. We are Edutainers from Derby, England. We teach about history from the age of the Vikings in a fun way. The aim of the channel is to build a large collection of folktales and stories from the Viking age. This is a mission we are continuing to work on with publishing weekly folktales. This is our legacy to the world. Since we started in 2017 we've added history to the channel. A Viking vlog series. We've unboxed things and told many a story in English in a fun and entertaining way. The plan of the channel is to open up to more content ideas. Talk about other eras of history from the prehistoric to WW2. We have a great deal of knowledge between the hosts. This is very much your channel as it is ours. The debate of did the vikings or saxons wear a gambeson is almost as old as the hills, from my knowledge it is documented somewhere that they would potentially wear many layers of wool, so wearing your whole winter wardrobe would be sufficient under maille and or as a form of protection. Very interesting and fascinating video as always my brothers 🍻🍻

I thought so too. No doubt we will cover this subject some more in the future. A gambeson is a great project to make. Thanks brother. I enjoyed editing this and I think being more ruthless with the editing is working. Cheers. Ic Thankie Thee.

I ordered removalists blankets online as lining for my gambeson. It will have 2 layers of blanket padding and a linen blend fabric for the outer layers. It will have quilting to keep the layers together. We used a martial arts gi, (karate style jacket) as our template. When the front layers are crossed it is held closed with a belt, giving a double layer across the crucial abdominal/chest region, finishing at mid thigh.

My Dr offered me a padded jacket once but that's a different story 🤣😜 But I always thought that it was just a few extra woollen tops under it. Just to give padding etc

Uncanny timing. I actually have a friend making a gambeson for me today. I have mail so really need one to go under that. At the very least I imagine wearing multiple layers of clothing would have been done. And I have seen tests showing that a good padded jacket, with many layers of fabric is very effective protection from most cuts and slashes. I brought a modern H.E.M.A. jacket for my son that has strategically placed hard plastic protective mouldings. The idea is that he will wear that under his gambeson. Historical or not we do need protection when re-enacting Viking Age combat today.

Oh yes I agree Treeve. I know some folk go as far as to wear knee pads and elbow pads to under their kit. a gambeson is a must buy and a leather jerkin on top is optional.

Thought of making my own out of key rings once. After the third ring down, started on my first bottle, don't remember my second bottle. Do remember waking up on the floor. Olady very up set cleaning up vomit. So I promised her I wouldn't do that again. I've never finished that chain jacket.

Oh yes, we use them too sometimes. You can't beat a good leather jerkin. it makes sense as you wouldn't want the oil from the maile on your tunic. a war welcome to the channel Steven Boniface from Bragi, Egil and Tyrkir.
