It's actually a huge use case for VR, it was why spending $1000 on a VR headset wasn't THAT alien to them too, getting even a three monitor setup of monitors and cables could run you 1000 alone, not including the desk requirements for such a thing. It has some limitations though, not being able to see your keyboard is a challenge. Some of the best typists in the world are gamers that use backlit keyboards for a reason, you'll be surprised at how bad you get at finding the keyboard once you tape a box to your face. You also can't have drinks sitting on your desk very well, too likely to knock them over or miss a coaster. Finally it does make you dangerously unaware of your surroundings, which for many people it's not a problem, but for some people (with pets, kids, wives, husbands, or co-workers) it can lead to some problems. Also, side note, it's a good idea to sit down before putting the headset on, that's not a fall you'll forget.
@ZakChoudhury

@@SherrifOfNottingham Very true @ limitations. I'm still learning how to touch type (which my VR headset users all can do) and need the awareness of my surroundings which disqualify me from using VR for my own productivity purposes. That said I do game using VR setups and don't need to look at my keyboard. Until high performing VR solutions are wireless, provide awareness of physical surroundings, and don't encumber hands with controllers, I can't justify anything other than using from a fixed (sat or laying down) position. I am a fall and tea spill survivor ;-)

@@SherrifOfNottingham Actually cutting off your surroundings is big plus for VR, it helps you to focus even if your work environment isn't ideal. Oculus quest 2 will have official 6DOF tracked keyboard in few months, it isn't a rumour, because I'm kinda of VR nerd and I have watched all FB materials about quest 2. There are also hacked support for this sort of things, but its not practical, the easiest way is to put a vive tracker on a keyboard, model it in 3D, and offset to the tracker, but your app has to support that and you have to get basestations, cables, etc. With quest 2 you could have wireless multiple monitor setup with keyboard that just works whenever you are, without any initial setup, and now the resolution is good enough for an actual work. I hate Facebook's take on privacy policy, but they sure move VR forward... You guys should check out this official productivity video from Facebook kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z5OWuM2bd5TAc9I.html

I really don't think it's that much of "a ways off". I think 10 years advancement surpass most people's expectations. You have a great Janet vibe going on there Joanna. ❡ However, anything that relies on Facebook or Microsoft (along with others) is currently on my "I'd rather be buried in an anthill and covered with honey" list due to how they relate to the customer. ❡ And why, whenever any media outlet is talking about virtual meeting spaces is Second Life never mentioned? The platform may be proprietary, but the viewers run on an open spec like browsers and there are alternatives available. ❡ Telegram is the same way. ❡ Oh wait. I just answered my own question. ❡ All these companies want proprietary platforms, so they can extract rent, not open standards like the web uses which would make more sense. ❡ Got it.

Thats awesome, but they should have showcased how work is being done there - just saying you can do it doesn't convince me. I'm sure you can have a meeting, but how easy is it to write things down? Or you could totally discuss a project but can you access your computer in vr and collaborate? I've done it in bigscreen to some extent. You can stream your computer screen and colaborare in real time, but only one person has access to the computer.

I can't even use my Quest 2 because the "Oculus" app is not letting me sign in with the Facebook account it forced me to link it to. So my device is just a very expensive paperweight until that issue gets sorted, which will apparently take around 70 hours. This is why forcing us to use mandatory Facebook accounts just to use the device really is bad news and very insidious and worrying; I mean you can't even check out the offline Home menu or system settings until you connect your Facebook account and also pair the thing with App on your phone. What a f'n joke! I honestly hope someone brings a class-action lawsuit against Facebook for this horrible abuse of our rights to use the basic features of the product we have paid our hard-earned money for.
