The Future of Time with Dr James Beacham

The Future of Time with Dr James Beacham. Is time travel possible and will time machines ever exist? Mike crashed into Swiss-American CERN particle physicist Dr James Beacham to chat about how we go about bending space and time.
Dr James Beacham is a researcher on the Atlas Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Switzerland and a popular futurist.
Originally from the midwest USA, James believes that every curious human is secretly a particle physicist and very much enjoys talking about physics with non-specialists… like us!
Mike first met James when he was in Melbourne, Australia to present at Pause Fest. Then in a lucky turn of events, Mike’s travel plans brought him to Geneva and he was able to visit James at CERN.
In this episode Mike asks:
00:00 (Introduction)
01:41 Firstly, the big question. What is time?
03:43 If time's a parameter and a coordinate, how well do we understand it compared to other parameters and coordinates?
05:20 Does that mean that a star that we think is over there, may not actually be there, because the photons have been affected by this force that you're talking about?
05:46 How do you visualise this concept?
06:18 Does that mean we might not have the right metaphor yet? We don't have a proper understanding?
10:09 So what you're getting into there is really about space-time, a concept that came from Einstein, is that right?
10:33 So, how big a legacy has Einstein left for you, as a particle physicist?
11:22 Did Einstein have a time machine? Did he come from the future?
11:40 Do you think we're going be able to have the ability to travel through time?
12:45 When you’re talking about travelling in time, is that forward only? Travelling backwards in time seems like a completely different kettle of fish?
14:30 When it comes to science fiction, what inspires you?
16:23 Let’s project into the future. Where do we land in terms of time?

"we are all travelling forwards through time right now." Ha ha, time travel, we all do it without even stopping to think about it! But will be be able to create a time machine?

How do you define time? Will time travel be possible in the future? This interview covers it all and I enjoyed the idea that we''re all time travellers, travelling forwards through time.

Time travel is like going through the other side of a mirror ... cute idea but ultimately impossible

That's a great analogy 'like going to the other side of the mirror'. Thanks for commenting.

I've never listened to fanatic religionists telling me some fairy tales about the invisible gods (dark matter). 😂
