Personally, unless something changes quickly, I don't think the Mets make the playoffs. the team slash line is bottom 10 in baseball, the OBP is pretty good, but they aren't getting hits with RISP or hits with men on base at all. They are 22nd in team ERA, 12th in earned runs, given up the 6th most home runs, 4th in walks allowed, and 22nd in strikeouts. and they are 20th in home runs hit, 21st in team batting average, and 24 in hits. That's a lot of basic stats that they are bottom 3rd in. I just don't see a simple change that can turn this around. The pitchers are giving up way too many home runs and walks, and the big bats aren't producing.

The Mets are almost always never allowed to have two good years in a row. They have one fantastic season (even if it unfortunately ended too early last year) and then they're back to being a completely mediocre team. The only two times they've ever had back to back years in the post season was 1999-2000 and 2015-2016.

You’re wrong about the luxury tax, it’s 80% of the overage not 80% of the entire payroll. They will still be spending close to 400 million between salary and luxury taxes, but that’s a long way from 522 million.
@greencat1849
Жыл бұрын
It's pretty much whatever they go over the salary "cap"...Idk the cap line bc that changes every year, but I'm pretty sure it is around 240 million. Mets salary is 380 million currently which is 140 million over cap. So they pay an additional 140 million on top of the 380...which comes to 520ish. Even at 80% (never heard of the 80% rule you state, but I'll run the numbers anyway) would be at around 500 million. So no, you're also wrong
Consider this, the last time showalter was fired in New York his team went on to win 4 of the next 6 WS

I like your point about the dysfunctional relationship between higher salaries and higher expectations. As a fan of a mid to low market team, we always complain about how they owners aren't spending enough. Then I see the Mets and the Padres this year and realize that building super teams can't always work and can lead to bigger disappointments and wasted time.

I agree about Steve Cohen. When he first bought the Mets, he said that he wouldn’t spend like “a drunken sailor”…and here he is, doing exactly that. The Mets are the most expensive team in baseball but aren’t the best. Not even in their own division. That’s a failure.

Big NL East fan here - Very insightful video - got a perspective
Who knew relying on 2 geriatrics to be your aces was a bad idea.
Not to mention your draft picks get worse now if you’re over luxury tax and keeps getting worse with each consecutive year. And luxury tax doubles every year you are consecutively over luxury tax. They renamed it the competitive balance tax and Mets pay 108m in tax, forfeit any compensatory picks and could lose up to a second and third round pick. The multiplier would put the tax at 216m next season on top of payroll. Which is why teams like the Dodgers and Red Sox shed some salary to reset the multiplier
As a life long White Sox fan, after watching this disastrous first half of the season and to all the people who say, "oh its still early in the season.." No. I can comfortably say that their season is O-VAH, as Hawk Harrelson would say. The Mets are the other team I've been following for the past few years since they acquired Frankie Lindor and been watching all their games like I do with the white sox. Jerry Reinsdorf has the same type of wealth as Steve Cohen but Jerry gives $29 million, "the biggest contract in white sox club history" to past their prime, mediocre catchers like Yasmani Grandal and Andrew Benintendi instead of actually dropping money on real superstars.
I totally agree that overpaying for mediocre and/or ageing talent is a bad way to do business. Cohen had a great foundation, threw money at it with reckless abandon and it may wind up being a huge problem

The rotation has been a nightmare so far. At the top, two AARP pitchers who have both been hurt. Scherzer was hurt last year as well (along with deGrom). Senga hasn’t been as good as we hoped. You've missed the point with the spending. The Mets are throwing money around to build a winner NOW while simultaneously improving a farm system that was ravaged by the Wilpons. In a few years, that won't be the case. Think about it: After 2026, the only big $$ contracts the Mets could still be tied to are Nimmo and Lindor (Diaz and Senga can opt-out after 2025, and McNeil has a club option for 2027), although I do expect them to keep Alonso. By that time, the Mets expect the farm system to be much improved and for some of their top prospects (Alvarez, Baty, Mauricio, Vientos and company) to be playing key roles. That way, the Mets won't be having to spend $350+ mil to field and sustain a winning team. It's why they backed out of the Correa deal once issues arose, and why they were unwilling to go beyond three years with deGrom.
@paullentz1972

Why havent The Muts signed Alonso to a long term extension like The Braves have with their young players?
good shit man
We were a broken system. The Wilpons had a knack of not holding on to prospects. Cohen bought a team with almost nothing in the farm system. We called up Baty and Alvarez this year so far, but we still have Vientos and Mauricio tearing it up down in AAA. Outside of those 4; we don't have anyone near close to being MLB ready. So the entire signing people willynilly looks desperate; what other options do we have? Not many if at all. Cohen said he wants to get our farm system to that of LA, Atlanta, and Houston to were we always have people ready to call up or trade if we need too and that takes years; so all of these signings are to keep the team afloat until then. That being said; we are underperforming hard right now and my guess is because 1) we changed our hitting coach and 2) starting rotation has been a patch job. We should; should being the keyword, be able to turn things around but man it hasn't been fun so far.

Couldn't agree more with your 2 points of underperformance so far from this team. I read somewhere they are grooming Eric Chavez to be Buck's replacement down the line so they moved him to bench coach (don't quote me), and I think Eric Hinske is our hitting coach? Yikes... it hasn't translated so far and it's frustrating to see this regression again. As for pitching, this is the risk we took with signing aging veterans where a majority of them are banged up and/or flat-out suck. Let's see how things progress as the season goes on, but honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they completely sit out of the playoffs this year.
Diaz was a crippling blow.
I watch as we just lose 3-2 to the Nationals who are not terrible but the Mets should be winning these games. We need to make some moves at the deadline. I don’t think we have to give up a ton of prospects but we need to make some hard choices.
Mets fans learning the hard way that money can’t buy a championship… it’s who you have in charge of the that money to cultivate a winning team
Time for an update
Didn’t expect the white sox to be catching strays here, they truly are a cautionary tale
The biggest issue for the Mets this season is that almost 4/5ths of their starting rotation has missed significant time due to injury. No one can account for that. This only highlighted other issues like streaky bats, a lack of pitchers in the farms, and Senga struggling to adapt. With Scherzer, Verlander, Carrasco, and Quintana healthy, we could have been talking about an entirely different team. Their health for the rest of the season will determine the future of the Mets. The lack of AAA pitchers ready for the pros is a serious point of concern.

The facts in this video are a wake up call for our Mets!
I'm a very pessimistic Mets fan and don't expect much from this current team. But they're very far from leveraging their future. This current payroll, as inflated as it is, is designed to be much less in 2-4 years. This isn't like many teams stuck with multiple bad 3-8 year contracts. The only potential albatross one is *maybe* Lindor. They'll have plenty of money in these years to plug holes with free agents again, preferably a guy at an Ohtani level rather then a 40+ y/o Scherzer level. I killed this team for not being aggressive last trade deadline, but now they do have legit prospects coming up. Problem is, like the Yankees have done for so long, they stash prospects and refuse to let them move up quickly (see, Mauricio this year. He'd be an IMMEDIATE DH upgrade at minimum). The main reason teams like the Astros, Braves, Rays, and even the Dodgers have been much more success this last half decade then the Mets and Yankees. Those organizations trust prospects and allow them to almost immediately get MLB experience. The Braves and Astros in particular thrive at this. Meanwhile The Mets sat Baty and Alvarez last year in favor of very mediocre players Their biggest issue is they
This analysis is really surface level, I think you left out a lot of important details. Steve Cohen inherited a pretty barren farm system and nearly the entire pitching staff was hitting free agency this offseason. He wasn't pulling out his checkbook just to flex his financial power; he was forced to build the roster mainly through free agency. The main problem so far has been their pitching health, pretty much the whole staff is hurt and it won't stay that way for long. Also, a lot of people (Cohen included) compare this org to the Dodgers, but people seem to forget the Dodgers weren't amazing until like 5 years after their ownership change. They set the payroll record in 2015 and only went 92-70. That's how this model works, they have to pay a lot in the short term because they don't have the internal assets yet to trade or call up. But it is also what makes the PCA and End Rodriguez trades even more annoying.

First off, can I have the 9 minutes of my life I just wasted watching this video back? Second, Aidan is 100% correct, a huge chunk of the offseason spending was on bringing back key pieces like Nimmo, McNeil, Ottovino and Diaz. The Verlander signing might not be great, but it looks much better than the deal Texas gave deGrom. The point about the barren farm system is very relevant as well. There is zero, I repeat ZERO starting pitching in the system that is anywhere near being ready to contribute. The other issue is the FO's total inability to acquire talent they don't pick up via FA. All of In-Eppler's deals have been horrible. Vogelbach, Ruf, Naquin, Hernandez have all done literally nothing for them. Vogie is blocking the much more powerful Mark Vientos at DH. I also disagree with the point about this year being crucial. Win or lose this year, the Mets are keeping Nimmo, McNeil, Lindor, Marte, Verlander, Senga, Scherzer, Diaz, Alvarez, and Baty. They are going to throw a ton of money at Alonzo. They will probably move on from Cahna, Escobar, and Ottovino due to expiring contracts. I suspect they keep Robertson. They might tinker around the edges with letting Vogie and Guillorme go and maybe shuffle in some new relievers, but that's about it.

I think the Mets will be alright. I've watched way too many seasons where they get off to a flaming hot start, you think they're gonna conquer the world, and then they fizzle out. Usually that happens in May, last year the Mets decided to wait until September. I'd rather a season like 2015, where they were mediocre going into the trade deadline, but then they went on a tear afterwards and ended up being NL champions. Obviously the dream scenario is to go 117-45 and then sweep the DS, CS, and WS, but that just realistically isn't gonna happen. The players, while good, are still human, and go through slumps and have off days and yadyada Also don't forget the pitching situation. Quintana is injured, Verlander has only 2 starts under his belt, and Diaz being injured meant Robertson had to be the closer which put even more pressure on a bullpen that's had to consistently pick up the slack the starting pitching left to be desired. If this team is somewhere between an 81 or 90 win pace at the trade deadline, I'll stay optimistic. And the long-term outlook of this franchise I am still very optimistic about

Do you have the prospects for a top end pitcher? You Mets fans seem to forget that part...ik you ain't getting rid of the 3 guys you need (Baty, Alvarez, Mauricio). And a trade would only hurt that "depleted" and "awful" farm system for a player that you would only probably have till the end of the season.
pinning all your hopes (and a ton of money ) on 2 40year old pitchers never seemed like a smart plan
[As a Yankee fan...] Very informative. I don't share your hopes, though: like the Red Sox, I just think the Mets are cursed indefinitely. I wouldn't mind being proven wrong, though.
I think you worded something wrong. You said that Cohen is overrated because HE made a non functional postseason team, but it was Billy Eppler who didn’t pick up the best players fit for this team and constructed this roster oddly. Cohen wasn’t the problem. He trusted the GM Eppler with his money, but Eppler didn’t make the best deals. Problem is that once your a team that paid 130 million to a 37 year old pitcher, you set a standard for players interested in the team that want a payday.
There are a lot of teams underperforming this year
I think we should've kept Dominic Smith, JD Davis and Comforto. This is almost like the 92, 93 season.
A lot of teams look good and are close to 500..... with the obvious exception of Oakland because I'd be surprised if they finish above 300
Also the money the Mets spent in the 2022 off season would be for multiple years per person so it’s not like the Mets had to write a $400 million dollar check or anything
You would be correct, they’re not gonna bounce back and the team is crumbling. Paying AARP members as a rotation was a terrible idea…15 was the chance for the Mets to win it all. One thing I don’t agree with tho is the 5-10 years part. I think it’ll be a 2 year issue as most of these overpays are in the short term until the farm system improves
My METS will do this year what the Braves did last year...suck now, shine later. 😄 [or at least I hope they do].
It’s very, very, very frustrating.
Steve cohen is the best owner the Mets have ever had.
almost every team suffers tons of injuries and slumps every year. every once in a while, you have a magical season where the team is healthy and they make a deep playoff run. thats why its so hard. look at the dodgers. star studded lineup but riddled with injuries every year. mets fans need to look beyond their team and see the injuries across the sport.
I think the front office is smart enough not to just wait for the mets to start performing if they aren't doing well. If they're a .500 team at the Deadline they will do everything they can to bring reinforcements.
This strategy would've made a lot more sense and led to far fewer tears if Cohen didn't say the goal was to win a World Series in 3-5 years after buying the team. Because the Mets farm system was mediocre in the early 2020's, sans for prospects that have basically already all been called up by now (or traded by BVW), the only way to capitalize off the talent the team already had was through big free agent signings, hence Lindor, Scherzer, Marte, Verlander, and so on. The free agent market is always risky even in the best of times, and when the best pitchers available are basically 40, that just compounds the risk. A lot of people have missed the fact that by 2025 or so, the vast majority of these expensive contracts are off the books - the Mets have very little guaranteed money at that time, although there is still Lindor's contract to worry about. But farm systems take time to develop; the Astros, Dodgers, and Braves were mediocre to bad for many years before ending up in the positions they currently find themselves. This current run is probably not going to get the Mets to the promised land unless they turn things around in June or something, but given that the alternative is likely a Marlins-esque fire sale, which would make Cohen pretty unpopular off the bat (no pun intended), I don't think this is that bad. The real question is, will the Mets actually make the necessary smart-money moves in 2025 and develop their prospects more aggressively? We'll just have to wait and see about that.
Because there are three wild cards in each league, the season isn't over in April or May unless it's really, really bad.
I think Cohen, the front office, wanted to win now. Throw money at expensive players. While drafting well for the future. Dodgers model. Drafting well is key. There are tons of homegrown talent this team has had since 1962. Too many to mention. Have to have the right mix of veterans youngsters. Then develop team chemistry. Then play well and together. And also not have devastating injuries to your core players. Then have the "baseball gods" smile on you, too. Meaning a bit luck as well. Baseball in general, MLB baseball especially is a hard game. The season begins in February and can last well into October. That's an awful long time to see the same faces. Got to have a good clubhouse, too. Pulling for each other and playing well together is another key. Let's see what happens after the All-Star Break and see what their mindset is for the second half of the season. And get key guys back. Or try to dump salary and trade for some promising prospects. And draft well. Kind of tough because they did win 101 games last year. Unless they can trade up to get a higher pick.
They will figure it out play winning baseball 😊
Man I don't know what's going on with my whitesox
Similar thing happening to the Padres
Chop on! Go braves
Perhaps it different train of thought but underperforming players should not impact if the contract offered was a good one. Scherzer and Verlander have sucked: but are there short term high AVV deals inefficient? I much rather have those deals that would be off the books in a couple of years than Degrom/Rondon 5+ year deals. Senga has played well Nimmo having a good season Robertson as well. Lindor in terms of WAR been a top 2 shortstop since signing the deal. Mcniel has absolutely fallen off a cliff but nobody was complaining about his deal when he got extended.
The 2022 braves? You mean 2021 braves? I’m so lost thru this video.. haha I haven’t watched a video and had more questions after I watched than before I watched it. Lol
0:30 except the White Sox...they're done....
This is why they had to make a move at the deadline last yr
The pitching staff needs to get healthy first. Max has dealt with random minor injures as well as his SWEAT AND ROSIN suspension. Verlander just made his 2nd start. Quintana is out for half the season. Carlos Carrasco has been injured and should return soon.
You never know how a team will react to a slow start but having two future hof pitchers leading the ship it should work itself out.. 30 yrs ago great names equaled success but in todays games of pitch clocks and bad rule changes it’s all in who figures it out
God bless
Fire Showalter and make Carlos Beltran manager. They need to get consistency if this year is to be successful. Dfa Tomas Nido and bring up Ronald Mauricio
It's time they bring up their two talented minor league prospects. Let McHits play left field and put on second and let the other DH and spell the infield.
I think you missed the entire point with the spending. Our farm system is pretty mediocre right now and we don't have any prospects to fill in the holes we needed to patch up. The plan is to rebuild the farm and spend to fill in holes. It's not reckless spending for the sake of having money. The Mets also don't want to trade away the farm for rentals or a flash in the pan. It's big spending for the long term of the franchise.

When you spend 380 million on a roster...you shouldn't have many holes to fill.
2:30 I recognize the face of an unassisted triple play
Just when you thought you couldn’t find a worse owner/GM combo than the NYY, Cohen comes along…same city no less. Paying 40 y/o pitchers $43 mm/year and closers over $20 mm/year is a recipe for disaster. See how the Braves (real moneyball team) and Rays conduct business. MLB should have a hard $200 mm salary cap to balance the league and lower ticket prices. Otherwise the richest guy grabs all the talent. $290 million is way too much and a joke. That’s what I love about the NBA and NFL. They force owners to make hard decisions and not just throw money out there.
$128 Million on two pitchers that won’t play this season smh, Old injured rotation, perineal problems leaving RISP, I think the Mets will get it together for a low wild card seed with an early exit that’s the best we can hope for it’s a shame, I think Steve Cohen is now only focusing on building his Casino 🎰 in the Parking lot which sucks.
This video is a Big swing and a miss. No one in the Mets organization or any decent fans believe that we have the best team because we spent the most. We spent the most because this team was managed improperly for years by the previous owners the only way to keep this team competitive was the overspend and that’s what Cohen did. A lot of money will drop off next year. Cohen is a fantastic owner, and no matter what happens this year. We’re very happy to have him.

Big picture with no aquisitions once the dead weight is gone and the kids are up. DH Vientos C Alvarez 1B Alonso 2B McNeil Ss Lindor 3b Baty Cf Nimmo Rf Marte Lf Mauricio I am not worried about the offense but I have no idea who is gonna pitch this season and next season. Bring big sexy back.
Mets have spent the first two months with the rotation completely injured and have had no one drive in runs besides Lindor, Alonso and Nimmo. They are starting to get healthy and like a game out of the playoffs, they’ll right the ship

So have the Braves, hasn't stopped them
It's not 80% of the total payroll. The Mets will "only" pay 80% of the amount over the luxury tax threshold
This is missing so much.
While I get it with the white Sox players wanting to leave if ur a big time ball player there’s no where else to go other than NY
Considering the Braves were 10.5 behind and Phillies made it to the World Series id say anything is possible
The mets biggest problem is the same its always been, they need more base hits. They don't score enough runs and their team ba drops with runners in scoring position. Yeah it sucks that their 2 best pitchers are geriatric, the pool of prospects is so shallow, and diaz is out for the season due to a freak accident, but none of that matters if you score 0-2 runs per game.
What are you a Braves fan?
