The FUTURE Of STEELHEAD In The NW... If We Actually WANT A Future Steelhead Fishing.

Спорт

In this episode of Addicted Life we're on the river with our very own Nick Popov, Cameron "The Legend" Black, and Ryan McCaughan of Riverside Guide Service. These 3 professional fishing guides took a day off from guiding to help gather wild broodstock fish and contribute to the future of our steelhead fisheries. It's super early in the season and the fishing is tough! Watch the full episode to see all the tricks Nick, Cameron, and Ryan pull out to put fish in the livewell. The day turns out to be a REALLY good day of steelhead fishing! Broodstock programs should be utilized across Washington, Oregon, California, & more. A lot of our rivers NEED broodstock programs and can support them. Using an in basin genetic we can help restore and maintain healthy and robust fisheries for all of our rivers, creating hatchery fish for harvest, boosting local economies, and most importantly helping recover and restore steelhead & salmon rivers across the PNW. Broodstocking should be used in conjunction with other habitat restoration projects & continued dam removals where we can! Lets help change the narrative keep educating the people around you that HATCHERIES are not bad. Thanks for watching everyone, lets share this one around and spread the word.
Check Out Hatchery & Wild - hatchery-wild-coexist.com/
Hatchery & Wild Coexist is a campaign highlighting the importance of fish hatcheries and the role they play in wild fish recovery and providing abundant fisheries. For decades hatcheries have provided important mitigation for the loss of naturally spawned salmon and steelhead while providing for fishing opportunity. They have helped ensure the ongoing existence of many salmon and steelhead runs and the fisheries they provide.
Hatcheries have been scapegoated by some as the cause of the decline of wild salmon and steelhead populations. That faulty premise has led to drastic reductions, and in several cases complete elimination, of hatchery supplementation in hopes of reviving wild fish numbers. It has also been a distraction from addressing the ongoing and actual causes of declining wild fish populations.
Hatcheries are not the cause of the decline of wild fish. The truth is that other factors have largely driven the declines in wild fish, including habitat, hydro, and overharvest. After years of hatchery cuts and budget reductions, recent scientific studies show removing hatchery fish does not, by itself, result in an increase in wild fish. Contrary to the false anti-hatchery narrative, evidence shows that well-managed hatcheries and wild fish recovery are not mutually exclusive.
Hatcheries can help increase the number of wild fish. Experience, substantiated by science, shows well-designed and properly implemented hatchery programs can help increase wild fish numbers. In fact, there are examples of where hatchery programs have been used to bring back runs that were on the brink of extinction. Hatcheries are an important option that when used properly result in healthy and abundant fisheries.
It is time to change the anti-hatchery narrative. History - and science - shows hatcheries can be operated consistent with wild fish recovery and abundance. Hatcheries are also critical to enjoying robust and healthy fisheries. IT’S NOT HATCHERY VS WILD IT’S HATCHERY AND WILD

Saw this documentary on how stocking is actually terrible and eliminates the natural selection and putting weak stocker genes in with wild genes and when stocking has stopped like for example there was this creek That was coming back after the St. Helens blast and to start it was all wild fish and it flourished and fish populations were high and there were big ones and as soon as they started stocking the population went down and wild fish populations dropped dramatically. You guys really should check it out it’s by simms if I remember correctly and called ARTIFISHAL

@@gabrielmorath6252 I watched the same documentary.. It was by Patagonia. I found it to be a load of garbage. People want to solve a real problem they need to go after commercial fishing. Want fish back in your rivers start going after those who drag giant nets in the ocean. Commercial fishing isn't sustainable and as soon as people figure this out and stop it the soon fish populations will rebound. Now we have to worry about China and the distant fleets fishing all over the world. People need to speak up and show your disgust for these unsustainable practices.

In 1877 Columbia River cannery operators, worried about the decline of the prized spring Chinook runs, organized the Oregon & Washington Fish Propagation Company, raised $21,000 in donations, and built a salmon hatchery on the Clackamas River. It was the first hatchery in the Columbia River Basin. The facility was operated by the U.S. Fish Commission and only partially funded by the cannery operators. Other contributors included the state of Washington. The facility operated until 1881 and then closed, apparently for lack of funding (The state of Oregon reopened it in 1888, then turned its operation over to the U.S. Fish Commission again in 1889) in case you were wondering Cam...

As someone who lives in Grays Harbor county, this is both awesome to see and disheartening. I feel like all the effort for something like this is falling on deaf ears at the local and state level. It would not be hard to put these on our rivers. I haven't been able to fish steelhead pretty much all of march on anything remotely "Local". I just don't understand the "wild" fish groups that have beef with broodstocking. They really think that the only option is the nuclear option of "close all hatcheries, stop all fishing and no more new buildings/industry". Those birds flew the nest a LONG time ago. It's time to broodstock the Grays Harbor, OlyPen and all washington rivers. Even IF it didnt help, it cant hurt? We've tried everything else.

Imo we quit a March fisheries and we get the native fishery to quit early spring salmon netting so those native steelhead can return the ocean without being accidentally netted but that’s for the pnw fish in Washington and I think we would see amazing returns in three years but must be a collaborative approach with wdfw fisheries and native fisheries to agree to do that otherwise it will be depleted

I wish Ca. Dept of FG Would pull its head out of its a** and at least try. Way too many factors adversely affecting their sustainability. Hatchery programs are essential to help sustain the species. What used to be prodigious runs are now nearly extinct on the Cen Cal and Nor Cal coasts. Way to go Addicted 👊🏼 for promoting the awareness, ethics and content. You guys are the standard.
