This was a great moment. When Robert discovers how terrible things for Downton would have become if he hadn’t listened to his kids and modernized the estate. Now everybody respects him for being innovative and ahead of the time - when in reality he was just fortunate to have children and in-laws that were smarter than he thought he was.

And then after Matthew saved the state, Matthew had to fight against Robert and had the state agent quit so he could modernize. Robert was forced to modernize. He like shrimpy were raised not to lift a hand and let everything in the care of others thus their failure.

I always felt so bad for Shrimpie. He's a caring, intelligent, and hard working man who's shrew of a wife ruined his life. When Rose got engaged to Atticus he was supportive. Was he thrilled his daughter was marrying a Jewish man, of course not. However he cared way more about his daughter's happiness. Once he got to know Atticus the religious differences didn't seem to matter to him anymore.

Maxwell Housman that’s true. But she’s not entirely to blame for the fall of their marriage. The one thing that started to sour them was that Shrimpy lost their money. Because of that she had to lose her position and title, her house and servants and fortune. So she hated her husband and she got controlling of her daughter. Her first two children went away. Plus Rose being so carefree and happy reminding her of her husband, maybe making her think that she would end up like him. She said that she felt that she would grow up feeling entitled to everything they should have been enjoying. And she felt sad and a bit jealous that Rose got everything and with a man and family she majorly disapproves of. Of course this doesn’t excuse her being a sour cunt

Shrimpie talking about how he and Susan were very unhappy. It just shows how different they were as a couple. Unlike Robert and Cora who grew to love each other as time went on, that same amount of time and more led to strife in Duneagle. Shrimpie loves all of his children but was constantly henpecked by Susan that no one could ever say that they were a happy family. Everything Shrimpie hoped to pass down to his son, including the manor, the fortune, and their legacy, was reduced to almost nothing. Shrimpie knew the party was the last hurrah before everything of monetary value was to be sold off. He knew he would be alright. It would take time to rebuild the fortune. He had his priorities right in one area though. He was concerned about his youngest child. He knew that she was the one most bothered by her mother and did what he could. He wanted Rose to be happy. Away from her mother, he knew Rose would thrive and thrive she did.

I think that the Crawley Family are very forward thinkers and very good Employers and any Problems then the Dowager is on hand to help because she loves and cares about not only her family's but the Employees as well and as much as she tries to a Prood she is very Broad Minded and Dame Maggie Smith is Marvellous as the Dowager as you never get a bad Performance from her only a Brilliant one

What scenes are from S1? As far as I can tell, the entire video consists of scenes from the final episode of S3. Or do you mean it’s one scene in a mix? That happens because of the way KZread groups videos.

4:05 lesser men may have been jealous at Anna dancing while they would be unable to join in. But not Bates. Just how amazingly proud and in love he is with his wonderful wife is so plain to see. He is so happy for her to dance even though he can't because it's something that she obviously enjoys so much.

It's a shame that this episode is the Only time Rose's older brother and sister are ever mentioned. I'm presuming by Lord Flintshire's tone that James went off to war and sadly never returned. Anabelle is married and living her own life far, far, far away from her parents. (Her mother especially)

Well, this explains why Susan is the way Susan is. Susan is very anxious, driven, and exacting, and her husband is so passive, he's done nothing while their entire fortune drained away and now they have to sell everything they own and their home. Susan feels she must take control, both because her personality needs stability like oxygen and because she no longer trusts her husband or thinks he's capable. But she is so high anxiety and so resentful of his failures that it twists. She isn't getting the reissuances she needs and has latched on to Rose as a thing she must fix and save, so she obsessively worries and criticizes. Hugh views Susan's comments as her being mean and nasty by nature (not as the result of her anxiety coming out wrong), and thinks he's being loving and kind when he steps in to shield Rose and let her get away with things. But Susan views Hugh as a waste who's ruined them, and when he interferes like this, he isn't being good--he's ruining yet another thing Susan is trying to hold together with duct tape. Rose MUST get married, and to a suitable person, before their ruin is revealed, and Hugh letting her do stuff like wear slutty dresses and sneak off actively undermines that. A softer hand might be useful with Rose, but Hugh has ruined Susan's trust in him and his judgement so thoroughly with his own actions she would never be able to believe him again. They resemble the couple in Mrs. Doubtfire: one is all fun, and the other has to be the horrible stick in the mud and voice of reality, so the other one then tries to be even more fun, which then requires even more rule enforcing, and so on, until they are so far apart, there is no meeting in the middle anymore. I doubt Susan likes the person she feels she has to be when she's with Hugh, just as little as Hugh likes being criticized.
