The Future of Retail Has WAY More Cameras
Ғылым және технология
We take a look at how technology is shaping the future of shopping at the National Retail Federation expo in New York. Advancements in image recognition, combined with artificial intelligence, are keeping an eye on both the products and customers - increasing surveillance and decreasing cashiers.

There is no labor shortage. There are corporations worth billions that either want to pay starvation wages or build robots that make their store’s customers into part-time unpaid labor. Another great example of the failure/inability of capitalism to produce shared prosperity.

There is an Amazon Fresh near my house. I gotta say its VERY convenient at times. I just carry a bag and my phone. If I need anything I just run over pick it up off the shelf and walk out. It saves so much time not dealing with the lines in the supermarkets. Certain days I'm in line longer than it takes to pick up what I need.
I was BEYOND creeped out by Amazon Fresh. It may be time saving but the CX while waslking around felt cold and soulless.

Dystopian, with lights! The problem with self checkout isn't the barcodes, it's literally universal, but the people. They already are trying to scan everything by haphazardly throwing things on, probably thinking it's weighing instead of scanning chips. There was nothing wrong with Fresh & Easy stores.

It looks like you need to provide your phone number at the self-service shops for them to send you your receipt. I already get way too much phishing on my phone. I don't want my store receipt sent to me by SMS. How do I tell a store receipt from a phishing attempt?
Thanks Bridget your the best.
What about amount of product, in case i scan it over once what would it be ?
Honestly technology in stores should be like this. Its a huge waste of human labor to do small repetitive tasks. The low wage jobs aren't ment to be wages to live off of. The same thing happened in farming. Americans don't want to work in fields anymore because it was low pay and back breaking repetitive labor. Now we are seeing the same thing in stores with low wage jobs. Cost of living is getting more expensive and at some point raising wages to $20 or higher just doesn't make sense because the cycle of raising wages for the same limited output will continue. Hence why we are seeing the automation of these jobs. Most people who work these jobs don't work them as their career goal, they work them as a stepping stone for experience for other better paying jobs or degrees for better paying jobs. Our labor is better spent on more complex tasks after completion of apprenticeships, internships, and trade school as the first stepping stone instead.
There is NO labor shortage. We have runaway inflation and energy costs that have artificially caused the cost of labor to be totally out of phase with the cost of living. Human workers are simply among the first (and not the last) to get squeezed.
Funny because here in SAN FRANCISCO people steal baskets FULL of merchandise and by law police can't arrest them.... even when they're present right there
Where company would spend thousand of dollars on robots rather than increasing the wages by a few dollars, what a wonderful world !

I like humans. Everything is so inhuman these days.
I refuse to do self checkout because it puts all the liability on me if I were to accidentally double scan an item or worse miss an item (heard too many horror stories of innocent people being charged with theft). However, I would love the automated systems that you give your payment information to get in and the sensors/cameras simply detect and charge for your items. No scanning or placing the liability on the customer. It will probably be a decade or more though before those systems are in grocery stores.

Why you don't explain how to steal and secret code
so what happens if someone has a burner or throw-away phone &/or email that is tied to fake name. how about someone wear heavy obstructive closing (probably sketchy looking) one day and shirt and pants the next.
We don't have a "labor shortage." We have a "PAY shortage." Companies want to pay as little to no money as possible. If it were legal - they'd allow employees to pay the COMPANIES to work there.
Already see a flaw. Bring a bottle of water and trade for a yummy drink of the same weight.

again, there is no labor shortage. Why are we still hearing this
I went twice to an amazon fresh. I thought I would make it a weekly trip. Except on the second trip I was charged for an item I looked at but didn’t put in my cart.
44 thousands robots in North America in 2022...there's no labour💪 shortage whatsoever...

Retail was never meant to benefit *Us*
Hey CNET, we love your hosts but please let them have a good vacation when they travel for work. Lower that carbon footprint. Keep our favorite reporters. Think bigger
This is a great way to eliminate low-wage jobs and increase the number of unemployed and poor people. It's good for investors and executives, no one else.
"retail are trying to find solutions to the labor shortage" Lets not fool ourselves, we all know the solution but corporate and shareholder greed gets in the way. - hire more workers and livable wages. I hope that when AI and Automation inevitably replace and displace millions of menial workers AI and automation will also displace corporate execs as well, they can get to experience what the rest of many working lass Americans are going through. This is just or even more important, make the vast majority Automation and AI a public utility and publicly owned, not publicly traded. It will end wealthy "investors" or shareholders profiting from all of it. I.e. Socialize automation and AI, not privatize it. look I am not anti-tech and you cannot halt progress or stop Revolutions, if anything I think it is time we start changing or replace our lopsided Capitalist system with better Economic models to go along with these changes and makes sure that everyone benefits and not just the 1%.
Pass.
Labor shortage = not paying people a proper wage....
so if you take a stolen credit card, for a woman, but is actually a guy, does the "Store" allow you in, if so then a criminal can use stolen card, enter, let the cameras scan whatever they like but take all the high value items and walk out.. the locked shelves, the system ask you to ENTER a phone number and scan your card to unlock the shelves what if you enter your friend's number and use a stolen card and take a high value item, would they arrest your friend instead? so how can the system prevent someone from entering their enemy phone number just for fun
less of a labour shortage more of a people dont want to work for slave wages kinda thing
Get in, get out, get on with your life. 😃
So rather than pay a living wage, invest in robots.

the problem is .. what if you want to buy something and YOU want to pay with CASH, and not be traced. do they accept dollars and cents and give change? i dun think so, so it may be an obstacle to ppl who dun use credit cards. also can you use Another person credit card to scan in or must it be your own.

There are less and less of human touch and make shopping less enjoyable!
More robots fewer retail workers, yes please!
So if technology is replacing human paid jobs then humans would not know how to make money to buy these, so these robots will be less utilized? Tech replacing humans is good but consumer is humans , not robots ... shopping for thought.
This needs to stop.
Boy, this is a first-hand look at companies prioritizing profits over employees. Anything to get that extra buck. Own a business now, or not many jobs will be left that AI or robots won't take over for us.
So how will it recognize two different produce items that might look alike such as cabbage & lettuce or different kinds of peppers that are similarly shaped and the same color. What if you put a plantains on there instead of a bananas? There are price differences in a lot of these produce items & we all know that rarely does the mistake favor the consumer.
