I dont know what I'm more impressed by. This amazing decoder, or the fact that after all these decades, someone finally made a locomotive where you can simply slide the top off to access the inside without having to take off the whole body at the risk of cracking the shell and/ or losing those stupid little screws! 😂

Of course if you only use Blunami decoders you don't need a DCC base station but can use a DC controller to supply power to the tracks and the Bluetooth app to control the locos.

As a certified Soundtraxx Factory Trained Installer, I am waiting for the popularity to grow to where they incorporate PNP Boards and the 21 Pin Decoders with Bluetooth as well before I start making the full conversion. Ok, I take it all back! What I missed before - and this is the crucial point - these decoders will function using DCC track power OR DCC track power. This means you can take your Blunami-equipped locomotive to a friend's layout and run it from your iPhone - you don''t have to ask "do you have a DCC system?" THAT is the game changer: Blunami will put DCC command stations out of business - all we have to do is connect 16 VDC to our rails and go. (This is really only an option for new hobbyists: changing out perfectly good decoders in an existing roster is difficult to justify economically; but a new hobbyist can buy a DC power supply and know that there is a simple upgrade path to DC.) Now, we Android users just need to wait for the Blunami app...

Several comments: First, before cutting the shrinkwrap on your decoder, CHECK THE WARRANTY. At least one other manufacturer (TCS) tells you the warranty is VOID if the shrinkwrap is cut or damaged. Second, this decoder costs $170! That's not out of line for a sound decoder - most sound decoders run between $90 and $150 - but unless you plan to install sound (as you do, apparently) you'll pay WAY more than you would pay for a traditional non-sound decoder PLUS a DCC++EX system. Third, This is a pretty expensive option if all you want is a better software interface to modify CVs. A cheap and easy route is to use DecoderPro, which is a free download. (You used to have to buy a dedicated SPROG board, but recent versions of DecoderPro now talk to all the major DCC systems.)

  • @SoundtraxxDCC

    @SoundtraxxDCC

Trimming the shrink wrap to access the plug does not void our warranty. If you remove more shrink wrap then you can void the warranty. We have instructions on this in the manuals section of our website.

This is awesome! As a long time DC user looking for more precise control, this would be waaay easier and less intimidating to jump into digital control and sound than any other DCC system out there. The only thing I'd wish for is some sort of physical controls. I've seen some older videos of people linking a game controller to the iOS bluerail app, so if that's possible to do with an android Blunami app then it's game on!

I've been using BlueRails Bluetooth decoders in my garden train for a while and really like it. It's only downfall was that I needed to put a separate Bluetooth speaker in my locomotive for sound. I'm glad to see them working with Soundtracks to create this new decoder. They do have Android versions of the throttle for their original BlueRail decoders as well as a Bachmann version for Bachmann's EZ, so I expect an Android version for this will not be too far behind. The biggest additions appear to be the ability to adjust the CVs.

That's just dropped a nuke on the DCC power base market. I've said for years that DCC was decades behind the times and it's not all it's cracked up to be. Yes, you can run multiple locos and form consists and turn lights on and off at the push of a button, but when you have to delve in to CV's it's like realizing there was a toaster sat on the edge of your bath the entire time! Programming CV's is like going back to a computer from the 1990s where you have to do each individual thing one at a time for every single loco that you own. It's a nightmare! I have literally twenty or so locos sat in a drawer waiting for decoders that I've been putting off for years because I've dreaded having to set them up individually and I've been losing patience waiting for someone to revolutionize the base units so that we don't have to even think about CV's anymore. The closest thing I've seen is computer control where you completely wipe all the CV's on all the locos and the PC software does it all for you, but I completely lost hope when the instructions I read told me that I have to set up two points on my layout at a specific distance from each other and time on a stop watch how many seconds it takes each loco to get from the first point to the second point at full speed three times.... *WHAT?!* You're a computer! I just set up like fifty blocks for detection and occupancy. You do it, dumbass!!! Like, who the hell programmed that?! I need a lie down.

This is a great video. I do appreciate that Bluetooth is moving into other scales. I am an O-scale modeler, and Lionel has been doing this for a few years now. It is great that I can take my new Lionel engine out of the box and run it with my MTH engines. Little, if any, modification is needed. (Please understand that I am not bragging, it is just nice to see Bluetooth move to other scales in larger numbers) There are some limitations. Sometimes your phone does have a small hiccup, and you lose your Bluetooth connection. You reconnect the engine and learn to deal with it. Another limitation that I did not see a solution for mentioned here is MU consists - how does Tsunami address this? Bluetooth is really only designed to run one device efficiently at a time. Lionel has a pseudo fix for this in some locomotives, but it’s not used widely. I’m interested to see how DCC manufacturers address this. Lastly, for those of you who like handheld throttles, Bluetooth will be a smartphone-only based system (at least at the moment). I love watching this channel to get a good look at what is available in other scales and tech. I’m not switching out of O-scale, but new ideas are always great to hear about. Thanks.

Brendon White - the way to stop being over whelmed by the selection is to take the time to really define what you want from the hobby. If all you want is watch colorful engines run in circles, you may be doomed. But for a great number of us, we focus on one or two railroads, certain types of industries and the freight cars that support those industries. Add in a tight era to model, and most of what you see in the stores are no longer on the table. I have friends that seem to buy one or two of every engine that comes on the market. We never see those engines, except when we visit and the closed engine boxes come out for inspection. Buy less, build a layout - any layout - and run more.

I would tho love this for the box car stuff where you can probably play music through it for like a music stand at the train station or something. Probably be good for smaller locomotives as well if you hard wire it from the box car to the train. That's how a lot of people made Thomas DCC in ho scale. I hooked it up to an old DC power pack, put the throttle in full power and ran the loco with my iPad. You can program it on the fly. I am also noticing a number of the Lego train guys are posting videos using the Blunami in their trains. The Blunami has a lot of applications it can be used in. What I am waiting to see is guys in the Radio Controlled Military Tank community to start using these for sound and lights. You have all the major diesel sounds on the decoder. One could easily adapt a Blunami to a tank. The only thing missing would be the tread noise.

Blunami, while exciting, doesn't suit me at all. It is a great product for those using DC, and battery equipped "dead rail" systems. But for those with established DCC rosters and layouts, and especially large layouts, Blunami isn't necessary. Unless you only have Blunami decoder equipped locomotives you're still going to need a DCC system. Also, Blunami only offers four consists addresses, as opposed to 127 on standard DCC systems (hence why Blunami isn't very useful on large and club layouts.). And Blunami decoders are significantly more expensive than Tsunami2 decoders. So while it's a nice concept, I'm going to pass on Blunami and stick with Tsunami2, Econami, ESU-LokSound, and other DCC decoders. EDIT: This is in response to George's reply below. Please disregard my comments on consisting with the Blunmai app and decoders. I forgot that with regular DCC controllers you are usually limited to four or six recalls (how many active addresses or consists) in the controller. The Blunami app also lets you program more than four consists, only you can only keep four active in the controller at any time.

That’s 4 consists PER device. So, 127 consist addresses is limited. And, with unlimited number of locos that can be added to a consist, you have more than DCC can imagine. We need to chat, I’m not sure you realize the capabilities of this fully. Email me.

Yes Blunami will not be for everyone. Especially those who have invested heavily in DCC, but Blunami will work with your DCC locos if you want to have a few locos that are Blunami equipped for certain reasons. Like you have a few engines the kids or grandkids like to run - Blunami is great for them, but you can switch them back to DCC operation when you are running them with your other trains for example.

So, last year for Christmas I was gifted a Lego locomotive that was Bluetooth operated. Is this the same system? Only using DC power? If that’s true, and this is a game changer for me. I will definitely go to DCC ready HO scale and add these little Bluetooth connectors it looks like it will save a lot of money and time. But still, my only problem is space. That’s why I have stuck with N scale for so long. Thanks again for some great information and an awesome video Jimmy. Cheers…I can’t wait to see what you come up with on Thursday.

This is a new product so it is not the same system. Blunami has a much more robust feature and sound library than any Lego models have had thus far. You can use the BLU-2200 in DC, DCC or with battery power. This particular board format is too large for N Scale, but we are looking into more board formats in the future. N scale will be a challenge though.

@@AnonOmis1000 I love Jimmy’s videos and always look forward to his next release. I agree that Blunami is a game changer for DCC folks. Since my return to HO scale model railroading, I’ve become very involved with digging deeper into Dead Rail/Battery on Board power for HO. I read an interesting comment about posting comments and replies on KZread videos this morning, posted by Computer Hope regarding “Why can't I comment on KZread videos?”. In that post, Computer Hope noted, “To prevent users from repeatedly violating the terms of service, KZread requires all commenters to have an account (channel). If you try to leave a comment when you are not signed in, you will be prompted to log in or create a channel.”. To verify this comment by Computer Hope, I clicked on many of the posters’ icons for their KZread channels in the comments section of this video. They all appear to have a KZread channel, so that seems to be a true statement. I can’t wait to learn even more about Blunami. I’ve been visiting the Soundtraxx KZread channel almost every day to try to learn more about Blunami and its use with Dead Rail/Battery on Board for HO scale.

I wish I bought RailPro instead of NCE but i learnt of RailPro after I bought. Even Ken Patterson mention them around this time but promoted NCE instead. RailPro's setting speed is very easy and you do have to speed match it does it for you. Go have look. An know not against other system catching up, good see.

At the risk of a bit of necro-commentary: The future has been here for quite a while though... Hasn't it? Marklin, Roco, ESU, and other European manufacturers were well into wireless operation via apps for tablets and smartphones from their control stations more than half a decade ago. Right down to remote switching on your layout from said devices. Aside from being bluetooth vs wireless, was this really considered a innovative step in the US scene a year ago? I'm genuinely curious as I came across your stuff looking at some n-scale layout video's, and don't pay attention to the US side of things.
