The Future of Hunger In America

While the supermarket scramble to buy meat and canned goods has subsided, one of the biggest effects of the pandemic is still growing: hunger. In America, food insecurity has hit 52 million people, an increase of 17 million from before the coronavirus struck, and it's only getting worse.

The current covid19 crisis demonstrates what is wrong with how the world feeds itself! Seeing spoiled dairy products, rotten vegetables and needlessly culled animals across the world should force all of us to rethink our “efficient” food supplies and try to create a system that is better able to withstand a crisis. We need to refocus on local and regional food systems. This doesn’t mean cutting off all trade, but it does mean building diversity, decent livelihoods for workers and opportunities for small and medium-scale companies/farmers to flourish. The goal is to create shorter, more sustainable food supply chains that are closer to our home.

What this pandemic has shown me is that I have to think differently and make changes in my life by becoming more self sufficient by returning to how my ancestors lived. So I started learning how to garden my goal is to get to a place where I don’t have to totally depend on grocery stores. The pandemic has shown me how fragile the system really is and how society has become complacent. It is a human right to have food, shelter, water and health care this capitalist system and society is not working and it never has. So society has to start trying to think differently and trying to find solutions to these problems and making these changes so no one has to suffer.

I’m not disputing that millions of Americans through no fault of their own have been thrown out of work due to the lock downs and the covid virus. However there is a case to be made that part of the problem is the general financial illiteracy of the American population who haven’t a clue on how to save and stop buying absolutely everything on credit. Sorry but poverty cant be blamed exclusively on the “system” there is a component of individual responsibility here also.

In the US there is always enough food for those who have the money to buy it. For those who have been spendthrifts before the pandemic and in the habit of spending all of every paycheck and making credit card charges to live high and beyond their means, sudden job loss means no savings and no way to buy food or pay monthly bills. Those who have a long pattern of frugal living below their means, of building savings, avoiding debt and owning outright their small home and a practical small vehicle, now find months of job loss an inconvenience but this does not prevent them from feeding their families or being able to stay in their home or pay their utility bills. Those who are unprepared financially are the ones who suffer the most during economic hard times. And a lot of spendthrifts do not even recognize that they are managing their finances poorly until they lose their source of income and have no savings to fall back upon.

I am an immigrant. I work in the US for 30K dollars a year. It's drastic difference compared to Russian Federation. I am not food insecure, I can save for retirement, I got driver's license and bought a car and almost graduated from 2-year college. My dad retired here on social security pension 1400 dollars per month. He could have retired to 250 dollars per month if he stayed in Russia.

It's clear that we cannot "give away" enough food to solve this problem. Some out-of-the-box action thinking is required. Something needs to be spearheaded at the national level to educate consumers on the need to manage their resources wisely when it comes to food. When those commodities boxes go out I've heard some people complain that they either don't like many of the items or they have no idea what to do with some of the bounty. We have a couple of generations that missed home economics education in high school due to the budget cuts of the past several decades. People have become complacent over the perceived abundance of manufactured convenience foods without realizing that they probably never could afford them in the first place. The purchase of manufactured faux foods is money down the drain. It's really ok to plan menus around thrifty meals made from staple foods, just like great grandma used to do. I know we can eat well in America on a $1 a day per person, as long as one has a kitchen and isn't living in a food desert with no transportation. Some can do this as a choice while some may have to do this to survive. If you don't know how to cook, you'd better learn!
