The Future of Earth: 1000 Years From Now
In the last 250 years, humans have drastically and irreversibly transformed the Earth. Greenhouse gases emitted by human industries have changed the planet’s climate, presenting the single greatest threat humanity has ever faced. If humans can cause such incredible damage to the Earth in 250 years, what will our planet look like in 1000 years time?

And FAR less power. Besides, you don't need to change the power source for safety (unless availability is the issue), for instance: replacing water with molten salt effectively eliminates the possibility of catastrophic explosion.

You did nuclear power a real disservice. It is safely disposed of otherwise we wouldn't be using it. While I get the "nuclear waste barrel" is instantly recognizable, it doesn't look like that at all and conjures images of unsafe disposal which isn't true. It would probably have been better to say "use nano-materials to more efficiently dispose of radioactive waste." Edit: For those wondering or interested, I'm referring to a video by Kyle Hill titled "We solved nuclear waste decades ago." Give it a watch. It's very informative. Hey, I do not agree 😅:) Yes it's true the nuclear waste is no threat right now, but.. You probably know about the half time of nuclear waste (?), I think it's impotent to take a clear view on this topic and see the pro and cons. Yes it's a really big catastrophy when something goes wrong AND the waste will stay for CENTURIES. And we can not really know what's happening in 50, 100, 200, 800 or even 1000 years.. (hope you don't forget the struggle a few weeks ago when russians were next to the chernobly power plant, and there was shooting...) I let that sink 😅 But, Nuclear Power is relatively clean and can be used for long times on missions were you cant get more fuel when you're on the mission (space, mars, deap sea, ect.) So yeah, I think in the last view month, many people talked about 'the great nuclear power' and I'm like.... Meh, they gonna blow us up, cause safety ranked second, right behind profit 😅🙃👌

As well the fact that thorium reactors are much cleaner than uranium reactors and the fact that nuclear fusion reactors are much closer to being in use than the timescale of this video
For the issue of radioactive waste, the easiest way to solve this would be to switch to a new fuel source such as Thorium. Thoriums waste only stays around for 100 years at most and is far less radioactive, and most of all could be reused again to provide even more power. The thing is this tech already exists but governments refuse to invest the billions or trillions of dollars needed to upgrade and refit their reactors. Instead they are doing the opposite shutting them down and permanently.

Nuclear waste isnt nearly the issue people believe it to be. Most of it is the garments of the workers or the like and is safe to be disposed of regularly after a handful of months. Almost all nuclear waste is inert within a decade and the little bit that isn't is able to be stored so many miles below the surface even the worse earthquakes we have on record wouldn't even be close to a risk to the waste itself. 3 mile island was had no explosion and was completely contained, practically just a pr incident. Even Fukishima has officially claimed 0 lives due to radiation. Only Chernobyl was a true nuclear disaster and it was run by a government that both didnt care and doenst exist any longer, so many safety precisions are in place it is nearly impossible for another disaster to occur and certainly not to the same scale.
@zsoltsz2323

The issue with deep-below-storage are not earthquakes but 1) on the short term, underground water. It could carry contamination into sears, rivers, and reservoirs. 2) On the long term, tectonics. In a couple hundred thousand years, "2 miles below" might well turn into an exposed mountaintop.

No. Even if all pollution problems are solved (though a nuclear fusion accident is very hard to prevent) the problem is that the heat energy radiated is just too colossal to be dispersed through space. Pollution through CO2 is actually limited in comparison : burning most carbon would bring back carboniferous conditions as a ceiling though it would be very uncomfortable for humans. But infinite heat being radiated would meet no ceiling.

I firmly believe that looking at what we can become, who we can be, and the better we can do is the right way forward. I think being proud to be human and wanting the best for it's future is the best thing we can do for the planet. For example, if you see you and everyone around you as filth, then cleaning up trash on the side of the road becomes "just another day". I honestly did not think this video was scientific. They are telling you things you 'already know' when that stuff is utter hokem you had crammed down your throat in high school. No - planet Earth will not be a fireball in 1000 years time. That objectively will not happen. Climate change is a real phenomenon. But there is climate change and then there is climate hysteria. This is more an example of the latter. Humans don't impact the environment quite as much as certain people think. Our Earth is highly resilient and has survived protoplanetary collision, the late heavy bombardment, impact with a giant meteorite and multiple ice ages yet life still continues and thrives. Hysteria detracts from solving real issues by making the subject sound nonsensical. It is always best and most important to present facts to avoid spreading harmful disinformation.

Good production overall. I was pretty happy with it until towards the end when they included a plug about moving to another planet. This is a repeat of the fallacious "Interstellar" plotline and makes absolutely no sense. If future humans have the technology to reach, let alone terraform a distance world into a place that is habitable for humans, then such humans would certainly be able to fix any environmental problems with the Earth.

A study by Oxford’s researchers produced a massive data-set based on approximately 40,000 farms in 119 countries. It covered 40 food products representing 90% of all food consumption. It also looked at the full impact of these foods, from farm to fork, land use, emissions, freshwater use and water pollution (eutrophication) and air pollution (acidification). The results, according to the researchers, were very convincing. "A vegan diet is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth, not just greenhouse gases, but global acidification, eutrophication, land use and water use," said Oxford's Joseph Poore, who led the research. "It is far bigger than cutting down on your flights or buying an electric car," he said, as these only cut greenhouse gas emissions.

While overall a decent video with nice animation and certainly made out of goodwill, the details provided are pretty shallow / just copy pasting headline numbers without going into more important details. Here are some point that I would improve/add on to this video. 1. It is very important to point out the source of "greenhouse gas" when talking emission. Sure, Food industry emit a lot, but they make them out of carbon and hydrogen atoms that already exist in the ecosystem (grass/water) that will naturally recycle itself. Fossil fuel industry on the other hand, goes out of the way to permanently reintroduce carbon from fossil fuel which is a "carbon sink" that the video itself mentioned correctly to be very important in long-term reduction. Same goes for coal vs nuclear, coal introduce new carbon into the ecosystem, amount isn't even worth comparing. 2. Food source isn't as big a problem as food waste/food transportation. Point #1 continue to be extremely important, food transportation today almost always involve vehicle burning fossil fuels, far outweighing whatever the food emitted. Eat/Shop local, keep waste to minimum TODAY, don't wait for any nanotechnology buzzwords. 3. Making the choice to go completely plant-based is understandably hard, if you do care about food source emission but don't want to give up meat entirely, eat pork and chicken. ourworldindata.org/grapher/ghg-kcal-poore 4. "Nuclear power emits far fewer green-house gases" is a huge understatement, it is multiple order of magnitude less/better in every way including safety, cost, emission of greenhouse gas, and even emission of radioactive waste itself. The trace radiation in coal ash is spread thin for billions to enjoy instead of being contained in iconic waste barrels, have you ever questioned whether coal plants even attempt or be regulated to attempt to contain their byproducts 1/10th as much as nuclear plants? Again, this advantage of nuclear is true TODAY, no need for any nanotechnology buzzwords. 5. A video about climate change without a direct mention of car/truck/road infrastructure? How American, they are one of the most unnecessary demand for fossil fuel. Although there is mostly nothing you could immediately do to help if you have no access to public transport, it is good to keep in mind the next time you vote. Even if you are Rolls-Royce rich or Lamborghini rich, refuses to stop driving, and/or you don't want to take the bus/train, it will take a lot of people off the road and you will be able to continue driving with now less traffic on the road. Bonus: I highly recommend this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pXt7j6NxYLfSZco.html It completely changed how I view generic "copy paste misleading numbers educational videos" completely. The video also inspired this comment as a self challenge to fact check these kind of videos.
